Caputo Speaks

Michael Caputo responds:

Look, folks - I am not being paid. Not by Sen. Bruno, not by Roger Stone, not by anyone. I am just a conservative activist and I take orders - and money - from nobody on this.

Unfortunately, I have nobody taking orders from me on this, either. I'm doing it all myself. If I can do it, any dope can - but it does take some time out of my day.

Honest to God, I wouldn't know Sen. Bruno if he boarded my boat. But I graduated from SUNY, I've been in the arena nearly 30 years, I read the news, and I have computers. So why is it so impossible for the media and bloggers to believe I can handle NYFacts and SpitzerFile on my own?

I'm normally thick-skinned, but even I'm starting to get a bit offended here. Fess up: do you think I'm just too stupid to pull this off?

I've never asserted that Caputo was stupid or incapable of anything. His intelligence or skills aren't the issue here.

Remember, the guy who's writing the script for me is Richard Milhous Spitzer. He authored this tragicomedy; he created his own starring role.

What's more funny: the insinuation that I got the DVD from Stone because it came from New York City. Last I looked, there were a few people living there directly affected by Spitzer's capricious, thug-like behavior. Maybe millions?

With all the people AG Spitzer screwed in the business community - entire industries - can't you imagine a groundswell of folks out there eager to see him pay for his crimes? Well, those people are on my email list and many are in New York City.

As Bouldin says, I think this statement is very illustrative of exactly what this effort by Stone and Caputo is all about: overturning the results of last year's election, a familiar Republican tack.

If you could only see my email inbox everyday, chirping all day long with unsolicited incoming information. The DVD was certainly not the first thing I received via Internet, snail and express mail. Is that a shock to all of you?

Importantly, I was threatened; I don't feel threatened. I've been around the block a few times. I've worked in boardrooms, on battlefields, in Belarus. I've been spat upon, beaten, shot, and stabbed. I don't scare all that easily anymore and I am certainly not afraid of this sophmoric attempt to silence me.

Who exactly is trying to silence him? Certainly not me.

More strawmen and obfuscation on the flip...

phillip anderson :: Caputo Speaks
What Azi Paybarah's story didn't tell you about our discussion on Fred Dicker's radio show: my Internet servers endured 50-plus hours of a "denial of service" attack. It didn't take much to unwind, but it was coming from central New York. You also missed how I was threatened: via telephone, as hundreds of phone-bank calls flooded my cellphone. The calls came from Morris Plains, New Jersey.

This is likely more thug-like behavior from Spitzer cronies. Tired of being hammered with the truth, they decided to shut me down. Well, it failed.

Obviously.

But I do have some PR101 advice for the Dems: read the Constitution, leave me be, and do a little communicating yourselves. Develop and rent grasstops email lists. Set up Web sites, send out targeted emails. (HINT: don't just focus on reporter emails, that gets you very low ROI.)

Once again, I've never even hinted at "silencing" Caputo. I've red the Constitution, even carry a small one in my wallet. I'm a First Amendment Absolutist. Free speech is not the issue here.

Heck, you might even find a few mystery packages arriving to your office, too. Last week, my parrot received a chew toy via US Mail from an "anonymous benefactor" in Albany. (Augie says thanks; she's ecstatic.) Someone sent me a nice bottle of New York State wine via DHL, too. (Thanks "Pete"; I drank it the other night with a nice red snapper I caught just an hour before.)

One thing is clear for the Dems: you cannot just use the Albany Times Union as your press office anymore.

Because the word is out on Spitzer. And times have changed. So deal with it.

Michael Caputo

Caputo seems awfully upset about issues that neither I nor Bouldin have ever raised. What is at issue here is that Caputo is quite obviously using Stone's email list. Stone's job is now to save Bruno's job. Caputo and Stone are thick as thieves. But, Caputo and Stone aren't working in concert even as Caputo blasts GOP messaging all over the state.

I'm not buying it, Mr. Caputo.

oh, and we and daily gotham (4.00 / 1)
are getting a lot of attention from someone who block their IP address. What are they looking at? they are looking at diaries about this story.

Daily Gotham:

TAP:

add to that the traffic this morning from a state.ny.us address coming from troy, ny...

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Just for the Record (0.00 / 0)
I took a look at my own activity, and it appears that when I'm logging on to TAP from my computer at work, I, too, come up with a blocked IP address.  Interestingly, when I clicked through to see my location, imagine my surprise at finding out that I've been logging in from Washington, DC all this time.  And here I was under the belief that my office is in Manhattan.  Clearly I must be delusional.  Or we should be careful about trying to identify viewers by their indicated location.  But probably still delusional, anyway.

Two observations (4.00 / 1)
First, what you and I have been reporting about this is uniformly meticulously sourced; Caputo's allegations are offered with zero backup.

Second, I think he just gave the game away; this isn't about a discrete "scandal", this is a clear attempt to Whitewater Eliot Spitzer. Roger Stone and Joe Bruno are playing the same game; Stone by using the same email list - and it is, has to be, the same list - and Bruno by holding up the business of the state in favor of his witch-hunt.

Key quote:

With all the people AG Spitzer screwed in the business community - entire industries - can't you imagine a groundswell of folks out there eager to see him pay for his crimes?

No, actually, that's what elections are for.

Why isn't the mainstream media reporting this?

WHERE does he speak? (4.00 / 2)
Is this stuff from his e-blasts?  Or, did he respond directly to Bouldin's very interesting post?

Must say that I feel the same way about this as I do about disruptive smart little spoiled children in restaurants and other venues-- the best way to limit their influence is to engage them not at all, and just go about your business as if their antics were invisible. Attention grows them.

While the sleuth-work is impressive, I've learned to never underestimate the depth of the bench on the Republican dirty-tricks team.  I believe, from hard personal experience, that some very computer-savvy operatives (I suspect trust-fund-baby individuals I know from Southeast of Rochester, but who knows?) nigh on to destoyed a huge sustainable-agriculture mailing list/network just days after Spitzer took office-- did they steal those email addresses, too? Could be. There are dirty-tricks specialists working for Joe's Gang all over the state, both for pay, and for free in order to curry favor.

All this is vaguely disturbing, but, the world is full of creeps-- they advertise to find and copulate with one another on swinger websites, even, and maybe talk politics and exchange email contacts afterwards, I wouldn't know.  If any of these types started sending me email, I'd put up a filter and send it straight to the spam-box with the rest of the drug-sales, money-scams and other trash.  Suspect that a bunch of the recipients already have.

he responded in a (0.00 / 0)
comment to my crosspost at daily gotham.

also, i agree with your concerns to a certain extent. that said, they are so obviously lying i can't help myself. nothing they are doing is overtly illegal or anything, it's the fact that they feel the need to bullshit me that makes me think that there is something else going on here. i have my hunches and i'm gonna shake this tree till i find out for sure.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Completely understandable (0.00 / 0)
It is, after all, an interesting analytical challenge.  And, you and Bouldin both really impress me with your analytical talents.  Just remind me to never play chess with either of you!

I was more thinking in terms of the appropriateness of the press pretty much ignoring this until it goes away. The infamous "echo chamber" is made up of such no-source-cited nonsense, after all.
