They're Only 'Questions' if You're Not Terribly Bright

by: phillip anderson

Look, even I am growing tired of the Roger Stone/Michael Caputo/Joe Bruno mess, but I just can't ignore the Albany Times Union's continuing campaign of cluelessness. This morning's edition contains yet another utterly disappointing column of gullibility titled, "For GOP, questions linger". They're only "questions" if you aren't paying attention.

Roger Stone may be gone, but the Republican operative left a few mysteries in his wake.

...

But there's more. Questions remain about Caputo, a one-time Stone associate who's running an anti-Spitzer e-mail campaign and Web site. The GOP operative, who alternates between Buffalo and Florida, insists he isn't working with Stone, Bruno, or the GOP, and is entirely independent.

Last week, several blogs were certain they'd caught Caputo and Stone in a lie after discovering they appear to share e-mail lists.

But Caputo said it makes sense Republican operatives would have the same electronic address book. He said he subscribes to a service that provides him with targeted e-mail lists, and whenever someone registers on his site, the service's list is updated. Other subscribers using the service get the updates, too.

OK, where to start?

1. I am not on any Republican email lists for hire. None. Why would I be? Why would Ben Smith's family be?  They didn't buy these lists. Period. This is just dumb.

2. The real story here is that ALL THE EMAILS FOR EVERY ONE OF THESE PHONY "GRASSROOTS" EFFORTS COME FROM THE SAME PLACE and the legit company they spoofed is none too happy about it.

There are no "questions" about this. There are no "mysteries".

Deal with it.

I Know I've Basically Said This Before (4.00 / 3)
but have you tried to make these specific points to Jay Jochnowitz at the Times Union?  Perhaps if you offered to explain it all to him personally in a five-minute phone call (which is probably all it would take now that you and Bouldin have assembled all the necessary evidence), it might actually sink in.

As you know, I'm not a big fan of turning the traditional media into contemptuous enemies of the blogosphere (with the contempt running in both directions), but rather hope to see our side become a reliable source and collaborative partner whenever possible, and ombudsmen/watchdogs at all times.  Poking sticks in their eye -- even if justified -- is unnecessarily provocative and will likely be met with hostility.  It may be trite to say it, but one really does catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

all true (4.00 / 1)
and you're right. it just makes me nuts.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

I Understand (4.00 / 1)
If our principal battles are the ones of reform versus status quo and Democrats versus Republicans, then these spitting matches between the blogosphere and traditional media only serve to distract from the truly important work we have in front of us.

If we want the traditional media to be able to rely upon and respect the work that we do here, we must exercise a fair amount of patience in dealing with them.  Maybe if you looked at it like being a teacher of a somewhat slow-learning student -- the frustration may still be there in some form, but it will be carefully masked.

We need to build bridges and alliances, not set ourselves up on a pedestal to be admired and potentially knocked over.  That way leads to isolation and ultimately irrelevance, which is clearly the opposite of our goal.

Is Stone an alcoholic? (0.00 / 0)
Stone's was intoxicated when he left that horrible voice-mail. You can hear this quite clearly in the way he slurs his words. Has anyone suggested he seek help with his alcohol problem? Could an intervention be warranted?

I'm sorry, but a sober person would never leave such an email, primarily because a sober person would realize that doing so was professional suicide.

He needs help.

I'm as empathetic as most, (0.00 / 0)
but Roger Stone gets none from me.

He made this infernal bed a long time ago, and now must lie in it.

Caputo works for Stone (0.00 / 0)
who worked for Boss Bruno.

It was blindingly obvious before your excellent cyber-detective work.

They lie about it because it looks bad, and Republicans always lie about things that look bad.

See the Iraq war/occupation/organized-contractor-crime.

SPITZER IS THE LIAR (0.00 / 0)
Spitzer's entire public career has been based on multi- million dollar
  loans
and gifts from his mega-rich father- all of which violate State law.
  Anyone
else woule be in jail for what the Spitzers did. This is the Sheriff of
  Wall
Street? A liar and fraud.
