Will anonymous posting on MSM blogs get you targeted for harrassment by crooked goons?

Now here is a very sobering story on the theme of "what are the upsides and downsides of MSM blogs?"

One of the downsides appears to be that a writer of an anonymous post might have their identity revealed to police if they say the "wrong" thing.  In this story from the Finger Lakes, a blog associated with a newspaper revealed commenters' identities to the local Sheriff when he said that he needed them "for a criminal investigation."  Actually, I guess it was so that HE (the Sheriff) could stave off a criminal investigation of the theivery of himself and some deputies.  That, it turns out, was what the commenters were blogging about. Then, he told his staff he would pay them overtime to find some technicality they could arrest the bloggers on.

Story is here.
Chilling.

Did the Sheriff show (0.00 / 0)
the MSM owner a warrent?

It would seem to me the blog owner was at fault for revealing personal information without a court order.

No question that the Sheriff was wrong in using their office to protect their own criminal enterprise.

What I have witnessed is republican operatives threatening democratic commenters by researching their backgrounds and threatening their jobs and such.

They attempted it on me but even with me being completely up front about who I am they struggled mightly to figure it out.

I know of one case where they did succeed in silencing a democratic citizen from commenting.

I also know of a case where a town highway department plows appear to take down the mailboxes and rip up the yards of people that are opponents of the Highway Superintendent.

Just coincidence I'm sure.

No mention of a warrant.... (0.00 / 0)
...and I am not seeing an apology from the newspaper, either, which is really bad.  They are a small-scale operation, and may not really hire very professional journalists.  Still, it is pathetic that their story does not even acknowledge their wrongdoing.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for posting about this, Robinia.

But I'm not clear on one thing- IS Fingerlakes1.com associated with the Finger Lakes Times?

This whole thing reminds me of the still-undealt-with travesties in a lot of town courts (which the NY Times dug into several months ago).  Who is minding the store?  Are we all so exhausted that goons are allowed to run rampant and abuse their power in such endemic fashion?  I mean, look at what was going on in Oswego.

I beleive so... (0.00 / 0)
I've stopped paying close attention to Seneca County since Senator Nozzolio had my job in Ontario County eliminated in order to drive me out of town... but, I think that the "Finger Lakes1" is the comment-forum run by Finger Lakes Times, and the commenters were offering additional "tips" in response to a news story about an investigation into a suspicious fire at the Sheriff's Dept. warehouse on the old Seneca Army Depot.  Which, BTW, they have not been able to get enough evidence on to pin on the now-obvious probable perps.

Another local paper had more details on the Sheriff sending one deputy home to get a porn video he'd been bragging about, and the office manager out to get blank DVDs on the Dept. credit card, so that he could pirate the porn "for his own use," all on company time.  Now, that was what I thought these goons did at work, not the bit about doing side jobs for lake-front property owners using the County's scuba gear.

You are really right about the courts, too.... and yesterday at State Fair, when I wasn't preparing for Silda's visit with the gang from Ag and Mrkts., I was doing a "Yeah, well, my hood is more corrupt than that!" contest with some Syracuse and Oswego folk (ok, the Syracuse stuff is a little old; Driscoll was there visiting us, too, and he seemed to be just glad-handing like a regular pol).
