Bruno Pretends to Care About Intercity Rail

by: Roatti

Thu Sep 06, 2007 at 11:42:25 AM EDT

Uncle Joe has offered a press release today, essentially bragging that $22 million of funding is going to have some kind of effect on NY's rail infrastructure.

While these improvements are certainly needed, acting as if $22 million is some significant amount almost causes more harm than the good these monies create- creating a first-rate intercity high-speed rail infrastructure in NYS will cost in the tens of billions of dollars- acting like $22 million is significant just makes the potential larger and necessary appropriations look that much more burdensome and scary to legislators.

If we are ever going to get serious about intercity rail in New York, the back-patting for miniscule amounts of pork has to stop.

Roatti :: Bruno Pretends to Care About Intercity Rail
For those who are interested, this appropriation will cover the following:

* Albany-Rensselaer Station ($11 million) -- Adds a fourth track with
related signal work at the Rensselaer Station to increase capacity,
flexibility and reduce congestion. In addition, exiting platforms and
canopies will be extended. These projects will also involve the demolition
of an existing building.

* Hudson Station ($6 million) -- Makes improvements to the Hudson
Station that would allow passenger and freight trains to continue through
without slowing down or stopping while a train is in the station.

* Rock Slope Stabilization ($4 million) -- Stabilizes the rock slope
on a section under the George Washington Bridge into Penn Station where the
rock slope is unstable. Currently, Amtrak is under a "slow order" in that
section which would be lifted as a result of the stabilization, improving
safety and increasing train speed.

* Approximately $1 million of the $22 million will be allocated
pending the final approval of individual project scopes.

If Albany and NYC are all that matter (4.00 / 2)
then those are indeed substantial improvements.

They might even help state government productivity, by speeding the travel of state employees bouncing between the two places.

However, the rest of the state would also like more intercity rail, please!

Thanks, Simon (4.00 / 2)
My sentiments precisely.  Why is it that the Senate is always funding these rail "improvement" projects in Rensselaer and the Adirondacks, do you suppose? Oink, oink, where's the tomato and lettuce and we will make BLTs!  And, we can always count on our Assembly gang to go along if they can promise to get folks up the Hudson Valley to the Bruno Rail Palace  at Rensselaer 8 minutes faster...

This is a job for serious nonpartisan planning, inter-state regional cooperation and a role for the feds.  Unfortunately, we have the same problem there-- hard to add a profitable Amtrak line in the Northeast without placating a US Senator from Wyoming or Utah or something.

Yes- I think a major motive for this (4.00 / 1)
is that Bruno is shamed into not using state aircraft for NYC-Albany rail anymore- since he has no reason to go to Rochester or Syracuse or Buffalo, or anywhere else in the state, all he cres about is the NYC-Albany corridor

Cheaper than Senator Anderson's ride-- (4.00 / 2)
He (Anderson, who had Bruno's spot among the 3 guys in the room back a ways) had an Interstate Highway built for him (Rt. 88). Underutilized to this day, but you sure can get to Albany fast from Binghamton (or Cooperstown), should anybody ever want to do that.

Meanwhile, no passenger trains from Binghamton to NYC, which people do want.

"Warren Anderson's Driveway" (0.00 / 0)
Fun to drive, but yes, kind of a strange choice.  I can see connecting 81 to Albany more directly, in theory.... but it doesn't get much use.
