We'll call this the "catching up" edition.

  • Bruno probe was months in making. (Albany Times Union)

The U.S. grand jury investigating the link between Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and a suspected lobbyist has been taking testimony since at least April 13, according to a subpoena disclosed Tuesday.

The Temporary State Commission on Lobbying received a notice to provide information to the grand jury in Albany on March 14, giving commission staff a month to provide investigative material it had collected on Bruno, according to a subpoena released by the commission under the state Freedom of Information Law.

    "Late spring", eh? Liar.

  • U.S. Said to Subpoena Man Who Set Up Bruno Flight. (NY Times)

Federal authorities investigating the business activities of Joseph L. Bruno, the State Senate majority leader, have issued a subpoena to a lawyer who arranged for Mr. Bruno to fly to Kentucky for a fund-raising reception in October 2005, according to a person who was briefed on the investigation.

The lawyer, Wayne R. Barr Jr., is a friend of Mr. Bruno's and, like the senator, an enthusiast of thoroughbred racing. Mr. Barr is also a longtime business associate of Jared E. Abbruzzese, another friend of Mr. Bruno's whose payments to the senator's private consulting business are being scrutinized as part of the investigation.

Loads of Balboni clippage below the fold...

  •   Newsday is the go to source for Balboni news. Check out Gov.-elect names LI state senator chief of homeland security, surprising Democrats and Republicans alike and Spitzer's choice of 'Senator Doom' is genius.

  • Also from Newsday, a look at the field of possible replacements: Both parties race to replace Balboni.

The announcement that Michael Balboni (R-East Williston) will leave the Republican Senate majority for a post in the Spitzer administration sent pols in both parties scrambling to position themselves to replace him.

Less than two hours after the Balboni announcement, Nassau Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs said he'd already had "a handful" of people approach him about the seat. Insiders pointed to Nassau Legis. Craig Johnson (D-Port Washington), North Hempstead Town Clerk Michelle Schimel and Assemb. Thomas DiNapoli (D-Great Neck) - more commonly mentioned for state comptroller - as contenders for the Democratic nomination. Legis. Richard Nicolello (R-New Hyde Park) and Nassau County Clerk Maureen O'Connell had their names mentioned for the Republican nod.

The 7th Senate District, which encompasses an area from Great Neck and Port Washington to Mineola and Elmont, has about 78,000 registered Democrats and about 72,000 Republicans, though more than one in five district voters are unaffiliated, according to state records.

"It's certainly no sure shot by any means, but we should have a fair shot," Jacobs said from a hotel in Mexico, where he is vacationing. "It's been a Republican seat but I think with the numbers that you see the Democrats have a fair shot of taking it."

Anthony Santino, spokesman for Joseph Mondello, chairman of the state and Nassau GOP, said Republicans are considering several candidates for the race. "We expect to have a decision in a couple days," he said. "We're going to run an aggressive race and keep the seat Republican."

Nassau Democratic Election Commissioner William Biamonte said an election to replace Balboni would likely take place in mid- to late-February.

mike stark sez ken bruno has a 'secret' baby.

Ken Bruno has fathered an illegitimate child.  The mother is a lobbyist at a well-known firm with an Albany office.

I've been around long enough to know that reporters won't report certain things unless public pressure mounts.  I think it's time we ramped up that pressure.

anyone know anything about this? is there any "there" there?

TODAY is day one. It always is.

    Even If True (0.00 / 0)
Would we really want to go there?  Unless Sen. Bruno has been hypocritical in a relevant fashion, I'd prefer that we not try to go after the father for the failings of his son.  Besides, going after relatives rarely seems to have much an effect (see, e.g., the impact of Armand D'Amato in 1992, or Neil Bush in more elections than you can shake a stick at).

Additionally, I'd be especially wary until we were absolutely certain that no Democratic legislators have similar issues with their immediate family.  Somehow, I suspect that their families are not all as "pure as the driven snow", despite what we might hope for.

    an investigation and nothing else ?!?! (4.00 / 1)
Great, our next "next homeland security chief" on the seriousness of FBI investigations from the TU article:
Separately, Sen. Michael A.L. Balboni, R-Nassau County, who is joining Democratic governor-elect Eliot Spitzer's administration, praised Bruno and said he will vote for him to lead the Senate again.

"It's currently an investigation and nothing else," said Balboni, a lawyer.

What the hell? Only a little investigation... move along...nothing to see here. Will he be saying that about all the FBI investigations that happen under his watch as homeland security chief?
