Two super-DWIs for GOP honchos, in one night, in one county

(Dude... - promoted by phillip anderson)

Saratoga County, NY, has been dominated by Republicans since forever, so naturally Saratoga Republicans have come to think they are above the law.

Which in some ways they are, but not when it comes to what NY law calls aggravated driving while intoxicated -- a relatively new kind of super-DWI reserved for those who are caught driving at .18 BAC (blood alcohol content) or higher, which is seriously drunk.

Two prominent Saratoga County Republicans -- former Congressman (and infamous Miami Mob Leader) John Sweeney and Ken Green, president of the GOP-connected Saratoga Economic Development Council -- were arrested early Sunday morning for aggravated DWI.

Thankfully, they didn't injure or kill anyone, but they were certainly quite drunk -- Sweeney blew .18, and Green topped that with his .22.

Details below.

Sweeney was stopped for swerving on the Northway at about 1:20 a.m.

According to other reports, he almost hit a State Police car when he swerved and was accompanied by an unidentified 23-year-old woman, well young enough to be his daughter, who was observed partly sitting on his lap.

Sweeney had better luck, if you can call the State Police enabling a serial drunk driver that, when he crashed into a utility pole after drinking at a local ski area, back in 2001 when he was a congressman fresh off his "triumph" in Miami.

Green, who is the point person for the proposed AMD chip-fabrication development in Malta, was found asleep at the wheel of his car, which was on a neighbor's lawn in Saratoga Springs.

According to a Republican commenter at the Times Union's political blog (comment no. 24 is the best, but not the only one; it's a slim reed, I know, and Google was no help in finding a better source), Green had allegedly also wrecked an SEDC-owned vehicle "the last time he was caught" and has prior drunk driving convictions.

Drunk driving at .08 is a bad thing; drunk driving at more than twice that is much worse, and obviously indicative of a serious drinking problem.

In NY, an aggravated DWI arrest, unlike arrests at a lower BAC level, cannot be pleaded down to non-criminal driving while ability impaired, which is what happens for most first-time offenders.

Though what will happen with a Republican DA and judge handling these cases is unknown now.

Neither of these guys are first-timers; anyone who would attempt to drive at that extreme level of intoxication has done it before.

Many times.

Since we are really compassionate here (not fake compassionate like the Bushites), I hope that Sweeney and Green take the alcoholism counseling that will be a condition of their inevitable sentences to heart.

Before they injure or kill someone.

Thanks for the promotion, lipris.

This really is a remarkable coincidence of two potentially murderous GOP-honcho crimes in one night.

And the details about Sweeney's arrest validate the voters' judgment about him last year.

Coincidence? (4.00 / 1)
Maybe not a coincidence-- vast left-wing trooper conspiracy, anyone?

I can barely negotiate those excessive multiple traffic circles at the Malta exit when sober (which Republican crony builds traffic circles, anyway?)... how anybody could do it at .22.... well, it boggles the mind.  But, if I were that drunk, I might believe the AMD deal would make jobs and benefit NY. 'splains a lot.

there to address.  E Stewart Jones says the following.  And ESJ never lies, right?

E. Stewart Jones, Sweeney's attorney, could not be reached for comment Monday. On Sunday, the attorney said Sweeney does not have a drinking problem and would try to resolve the matter as soon as possible

.22? (4.00 / 1)
Dude! hasn't anyone ever told you that it is dangerous to mix that much blood in your alcohol stream?
