Poll Numbers- a Reality Check

We all know last week's terrible polling news for Spitzer. And there is no sugar-coating it. It's bad.

But let's have a reality check here.

Spitzer's worst poll of his political career is a favorable/unfavorable of 41-46.

Joe Bruno on the other hand last clocked in at Siena at 23-42

Simple math shows that out of all respondents who have an opinion either way, Spitzer is approved by 47% of them. Bruno is approved by 35% of those who have an opinion of him either way.

If this were a beef between New York rappers instead of politicians, Spitzer could just go tell Bruno "you couldn't come close on my worst day."

And he would be right.

And anyone who thinks otherwise and that the NY Republicans have any chance of holding onto the Senate a year from now is just playing themselves.

and that underscores my position that the state trooper and drivers license issues will not drive the Democrats from capturing the State Senate. Spitzers numbers are down because he with more than a little help from the corporatist media received a one/two combination to his chin! But he can learn from this and rise up to a comeback. Bruno on the other hand is down and down for a prolonged count! Those numbers are unwinnable and Bruno must be the centerpiece of all our efforts to return Albany to the people.

...and maybe Satan and the Unibomber poll even a bit lower. Bruno's been ripping off the people of NYS for decades now, and, finally, most of us have wised up to that, and are appropriately resentful. Spitzer, on the other hand, was elected to lead us, through enlightened policy, into a new era of democratic (small d) governance in Albany. To do that, he needs a bit more behind him than "At least I'm not as despicable as Joe Bruno." It's only a 2-guy mano-a-mano if we are planning to stick with the 3-dorks-in-a-room style of governance. Gotta aim higher.

Spitzer being unpopular probably doesn't hurt overmuch in the state Senate races. Ds are better off running as independent voices who will represent their constituents, which is dependent on how people see Bruno, than as Spitzer's Seven Dwarves, witness the Johnson race. But Spitzer being unpopular doesn't give him much leverage when it comes to governing, which will be an issue when dealing with the state Senate.

but I'm just saying even after all of the terrible events that have happened, he's still way more popular than Bruno and the GOP's chances of using Spitzer's fumbles to survive extinction are slim to none.

The license proposal "thingie" is small potatoes but indicitive of what the tea leaves are telling the GOP in NY. Thanks to GW#43 they are history come election day 2008...NY goes Dem 70% -30% in next general election
