His Milkshake Brings All The Boys To The Yard...

The NY Daily News has a piece in today's edition describing a phenomena that I too have noticed over the past few months and one to which I myself am not completely immune. It seems there a fairly large number of guys who have developed something of a "man-crush" (not that there's anything wrong with that, btw) on our new Governor and his brash reformin' swagger. I mean, let's face it. He's the cool rider of reform that so many of us have been saving ourselves for...

New York's guv affair
City men can't help but (platonically) crush on Spitzer

Don't panic: It's okay if your boyfriend or husband has developed a sudden urge to hang out in Albany and watch CNBC. Maybe you catch him sighing as he scrolls through political blogs, or he got goose bumps yesterday as the new governor unleashed his State of the State address.

There is just something about Spitzer - and men across New York are feeling the fever of an Eliot man-crush. "He just seems like a `take no crap' kind of guy," says Douglas Neri, 26, of Manhattan. "He sees something wrong and goes after it. He's inspiring."

"Spitzer's best quality is probably the ire he inspires in Wall Street types," says Alex Pareene, who writes for wonkette.com. "Spitzer's like a bouncer who kicks out the I-banker jerk who just made a pass at your girlfriend."

And just like Obama and Clinton, say fans, the new gov's the kind of man guys want to hang out with.

"He seems tough, has a sense of humor but he isn't actually handsome in a way that makes you feel weird or like you have an actual crush on him," says one young Brooklyn man who works in politics, and requested anonymity. "If a man-crush is too attractive, it raises the gay flags that send us straight men bounding for the hills."

Other reasons cited for the purely political swoon: There's something about the way he smiles when he says state government has been asleep at the wheel. He's pretty sure of himself, and a little confidence can get you far ("He's even slightly arrogant," opined another Manhattan fan who asked not to be named).

Dreamy...

Oh Lord (0.00 / 0)
What is the matter with these people?

Gimme a break. Spitzer has a strong appearance (and track record) of competence... something lacking in far too many  government officials... and self-confidence. He is intelligent and capable and saying most of the right things. What the hell does any of that have to do with "man-crush" or sighing or whether he is not too good looking enough or whatever other extraneous, meaningless, and detracting hogwash this article is talking about.

Gimme a break.

We want competence and seriousness in our elected officials and we are ready to provide full support to those that show it. This guy is showing it.

This kind of reporting detracts from the seriousness of the issues at hand. Who cares what color Hillary's pants suit was or how good looking Obama is or whether Edwards daughter showed too much leg on the family christmas card.

What are their ideas for solving the health care crises? How do they plan to fix the messes Bush has created? What is their approach to extremism abroad and at home? How do they intend to tackle corruption and the un-democratic brokenness of our state and federal governmental processes? How do they intend to close the enormous and growing divide between the filthy rich and the rest of us? What new ideas to they bring to the table regarding poverty and its partners crime, drugs, and despair?

I could care less if they look like Michelle Pfieffer, George Clooney, or Gomer frickin Pyle. What do they bring to the table?

it's the daily news (0.00 / 0)
it's what they do.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

also, look at that first quote. (4.00 / 1)
"He just seems like a `take no crap' kind of guy," says Douglas Neri, 26, of Manhattan. "He sees something wrong and goes after it. He's inspiring."

the gist of the story seems to be that the phenomena is rooted mainly in their admiration of who he is and what he's trying to do, that he IS inspiring.

omg, i think i just defended the daily news. i might need to lay down...

TODAY is day one. It always is.

He is inspiring (4.00 / 1)
so what the heck does that have to do with whatever a "man-crush" is? Or whether he is good looking, not good looking, good looking enough but not too much, or whatever they are going on about.

It is the daily news and just the sort of reason why a lot of those traditional media guys drive me nuts.

It's the voice. (4.00 / 2)
That snarly, raspy, going-to-kick-your-ass voice. Hot hot hot.

OMG Yes (0.00 / 0)
And the blue eyes. And the height. And the square jaw. And the charisma ... hold on, let me wipe the drool off my chin.

Well.... (4.00 / 2)
For a minute there, I thought I might be gay. Now I know it's a "man crush."

We've got some work ahead of us.

He's dreamy, in a Kurt Douglas kind of way. (0.00 / 0)

All you need is Love.

What do you call it? (4.00 / 1)
I totally have a crush on Spitzer.  After listening to his State of the State speech, I remarked that I thought I was in love.  Since I'm not a man, what do you call this sort of crush?  It's more of an intellectual crush, not at all like the crush I have on Viggo Mortensen.

I call it (4.00 / 1)
High Expectations.

that all american brainy jewish hunk of a governor (4.00 / 2)

Why do I love this guy?

1.

I love his super brainy asshoe quality.  He's ever so slightly strident, pissed off, almost vaguely autism spectrum/dysfunctional genius.

  2.  I like his jawline and the fleeting looks of violence he gets when he talks about things like gay marriage and wall street cheaters.

3.  this guy is a REAL progressive--he reminds me of people I knew at Harvard--he's a real Ivy Leaguer, not a fake poseur like Kerry or Bush, rich idiots who may have attended Yale or Harvard but never did the reading.

4.  I am totally in love with Governor Spitzer.

5.  And I am a total 100% lesbian.

So this guy is truly hot--men, lesbians, straight women--it doesn't matter--

OUR GOVERNOR ROCKS!!!!!! Spitzer for President! Eventually--that is.  Frankly, I wish he could somehow be both Mayor of NYC and Governor, and then eventually President.
