Edwards Edges Hillary in NYC Mock Caucus, Candidate Worthy of Actual Mockery Takes Third

by: phillip anderson

Thu Dec 06, 2007 at 16:12:23 PM EST

Last night, DFNYC held their "mock caucus" at a bar here in NYC. It was a fun affair with bribery of caucus-ers with all manner of food and drink eagerly encouraged. Local blogger Dan Jacoby even made an aggressive pitch for, um, himself. The results from the first round were:

23% - John Edwards
18% - Hillary Clinton
16% - Dennis Kucinich
13% - Dan Jacoby (the pride of DFNYC)
11% - Barack Obama
10% - Bill Richardson
8% - Stephen Colbert

For the second round, as it will be in Iowa next month, supporters of candidates who falied to garner at least 15% in the first round were asked to move to their second choice candidate. The final results:

37% - John Edwards
35% - Hillary Clinton
28% - Dennis Kucinich

Hillary upset by Edwards in New York? Stop the presses.

And don't even get me started about Dennis. I mean, the dumplings brought by the Kucinich supporters were divine, but, c'mon.

I deliberately titled this post so as to anger Kucinich supporters. I am trying to start a primary pe fight with them. i mean, why should big orange have all the fun?

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Well . . . (0.00 / 0)
I would kind of hope that we'd make it through the next two months without getting into intra-party squabbles among the presidential candidates' camps, since that would only threaten to divide us all unnecessarily.  I actually suspect that there will be one or more large exoduses (exodoi, to be proper to the ancient Greek?) from Big O, either voluntarily or after folks feel driven out, and I don't want to see that happen here.

Since I'm guessing from your post that you were there, my question about what inferences might be taken from last night's events would be this:  what was the approximate demographic makeup of the caucus goers, particularly as regards age and race?  I have a suspicion that a younger crowd with fewer minorities in it would explain the otherwise surprising skew to Kucinich.

i'm mostly joking (0.00 / 0)
there is a rec'd diary at kos trying to make this into something that it wasn't, as in, like, significant. it was basically a party in a manhattan bar with about 50 people in attendance. i would say probably half the crowd weren't even voting members of DFNYC.

there were plenty of people there you know and i would say age wise it probably is similar to a typical NYC dKos meetup.

but hadn't read it, since I didn't think that it was likely going to be very substantive.

Any type of caucus event is notoriously fickle -- even in Iowa, turnout is typically in the 3-4% range and can end up being wildly unrepresentative even for a state that isn't very heterogeneous to begin with.
