Regarding a story that appeared in The Post-Star on Dec. 6: "Rep. Gillibrand announces she is pregnant."

First of all, I must admit that I am a male chauvinist and that there are, thankfully, differences between men and women. There are many occupations suitable for women and their physical attributes. Carrying a weapon while serving in the Armed Forces and firefighting are not suitable lines of work for women to prove that they are physically equal to men. How many male police officers feel comfortable with a 100 pound female backup?

And now, I have to add serving in the U.S. House and Senate as an occupation that may not be suitable for women.

Ms. Gillibrand's current pregnancy makes a strong case for my opinion. Ms. Gillibrand was elected to serve her constituency, and while she is away from her elected office she cannot perform those duties. The taxpayers who were duped into voting for her will have to pay for her medical benefits. Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer, Ms. Gillibrand receives excellent health benefits, courtesy of her constituents. We will be without representation in Congress for a time leading up to and following the child's birth. There will be times when she and the new baby will visit doctors. You can add those days to the total that she will not be serving her constituents.

The current base salary (2006) for members of the House and Senate is $165,200 per year. I wonder if Ms. Gillibrand will do the right thing and reimburse the U.S. Treasury in the amount of $452.60, her daily salary, for each day that she is unable to perform her elected duties. For some reason, I doubt it.

RON BLACHUT
Queensbury

Thank you Mr. Blachut for this enlightening letter. Given Mr. Blachut's thankfulness for the
"differences between men and women" one is left to wonder just what the "many occupations suitable for women and their physical attributes" are.

I too, am thankful for the differences between men and women. I am also thankful for the different perspectives that women bring to political life in The United States of America. I am particularly thankful to have Kirsten Gillibrand as my representative to Congress

is having a ball with this idiot.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

There are differences... (4.00 / 2)
...thankfully, between thinking people and knee-jerk male chauvanists.  There are many occupations suitable for male chauvanists and their mental attributes.  Carrying a baby and firefighting are not suitable lines of work for male chauvinists to prove that they are more important than all life on earth, and particularly than those they construe as the "weaker sex" (whom, due to their presumption of lesser value, male chauvinists would likely leave in burning buildings, if men were in those buildings and not yet rescued).  How many police officers would feel comfortable with a partner who would let a perpetrator escape because, since she was a woman, his knee-jerk reaction was to stereotype her as incapable of being a perp?

Here's hoping that Mr. Blachut is in one of those jobs where it is safe to have male chauvanists, appropriate to his mental attributes.  Like, maybe, picking up trash or mowing lawns.

But woman have smaller brain than man! (0.00 / 0)

It's funny when Borat does it.

It's absolutely fucking pathetic when Republicans do it and they aren't joking.

If you say so... (0.00 / 0)
... I think the guy is funny looking but don't get what your attraction for him is.  Oh, well, dif strokes.

And most women know the size of the brain doesn't matter much when it is so simple to get all the blood to flow elsewhere, pretty much entirely stopping mental activity.

There are laws... (4.00 / 1)
protecting pregnant women in the workplace for this very reason. Men like this, if in position to do so, would probably fire a woman for being pregnant. After all, how dare they have children and interfere with their business interests...

I hate to say it, but I warned against this when it was announced before that Gillibrand was expecting. Obviously, this guy has more motive than just being a sexist fool. He thinks a Republican should be in that spot, but he's just covering it with his hatred for women. HOw pathetic.

And I will bet you a doughnut (0.00 / 0)
that Mr. Blachut would love to overturn Rove v. Wade, too.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
