NY-26: Powers at a house party in Orleans County

by: robert.harding

NY-26 Democratic candidate Jon Powers attended a house party here in Orleans County Sunday afternoon. The host was Orleans County Democratic Committee chairwoman Sally Rytlewski, who was kind enough to open up her home for 90 minutes to host Jon and a crowd of about 30-40 people.

It seems to me that as this campaign goes on, Jon is becoming a stronger candidate. Not to say he wasn't before, but he certainly has shown to many people that he is very qualified to be their representative her in New York's 26th district and he also has proven that he is very knowledgeable about local issues. He certainly can balance the national issues with the local ones very well. That will only help him in any primary and general election.

More on the flip.

Jon spoke for about 5-10 minutes and took a few questions. He made one mention of a prior candidate who ran on one issue. Not that Jon had any problem with the issue, but there is a problem with having a one issue candidate. One of the questions that Jon took focused on taxes. Jon came out and said emphatically that he will not (vote to) raise taxes.

I'm glad he touched on that for a number of reasons. One, we are a heavily taxed state and in Orleans County, our tax rate is one of the highest we've ever had. Two, Tom Reynolds will make taxes an issue. He'll try and accuse Jon of supporting a tax hike. So it only benefits Jon to shoot down such a notion early and often.

Overall, it was a terrific event. I'm considering hosting my own. It really brought out a lot of people who are dedicated Democrats. I also spoke to Scott Rytlewski (the host's son) and he said that there was a very staunch Republican in the room who was very impressed with Jon.

Bipartisan support is what Jon needs. What we hope for is by this time next year, we will be calling Jon Representative Jon Powers.

I'm the only one that CAN see them. The links are fine... it might be the hosting site I used.

I think Jon Powers has done a great job running so far.  I want to give money to his campaign, nad his charity.  Does anyone know how I find War Kids Relief online?

Warkidsrelief.org (0.00 / 0)
That's the website to go to. And to give money to his campaign, here's his ActBlue page.

Unfortunately that website doesn't work.  It comes up Error 404 - Not Found.

So it doesn't... (0.00 / 0)
That's news to me. I e-mailed Jon to see what's up with that.

Jon told me that War Kids is on hiatus for now. It's probably because of his campaign. He was the major figure for the group so I can see why he did that.

that ActBlue link (0.00 / 0)
should be in all the future Powers posts on the site

Feel free to contribute to Club 26. What you do as a member of Club 26 is give a recurring monthly donation of at least $26 each month until November.

But again, if you'd prefer to give just $10 a month (which goes a long way), feel free to do that too. Just go to the link I provided in my other comment.

It was the hosting site I used. Apparently Kodak Gallery doesn't allow you to post pictures you upload on blogs. Maybe it works for some people, but it obviously didn't work for me.

Usually I use Flickr, but I've used my monthly "quota" already.

One note about the first picture: That was taken before they turned on the lights in the room. The only light I was going off of was natural light coming in through the windows. You can see the difference in picture number two, where there was actually lights on in the room.
