NYS Dems Diss 50 State Strategy

by: am

Tue Jan 09, 2007 at 20:01:51 PM EST

While most Democrats around the country got on board the 50 state strategy and rode to victory in November, we saw NY State Dems on the platform, with the entrenched senate majority still in place. In fact some Dems helped the Republican Senate Majority Leader coast to an unchallenged victory…and that might have cost the Dems the Senate Majority in 2006.

Challenging this race was important for a couple of reasons. Fielding an opponent in the top-of-the-Senate-race would have invigorated other Democratic challengers as well as focused the press, fundraising efforts and campaign energy on a consistent statewide message of reform and hope. With no challenger, the Majority Leader was free to help beat back the Democratic political tsunami of 2006. If he had been challenged, the Democrats might have been able to capture the Senate majority…and they might have done it for a fraction of the expense it will take in 2008 with anticipated primaries and open seat contests. And the Spitzer administration in its first day would have had the legislative support to really have a true day one "everything changes".

am :: NYS Dems Diss 50 State Strategy
As was usually the case in this district, the conventional wisdom was that Bruno would waltz to victory like every other incumbent was expected to and almost always does (with the notable exception of Stewart-Cousins beating Spano, a clear example of why every seat should be contested!) But this summer, after initially indicating support for Brian Premo to run as the Democratic challenger to Sen. Bruno, the Saratoga Dems broke from the Rensselaer Dems and did not endorse a candidate. Its all a bit complicated, but what's key is that it was Democrats who filed a complaint with the Board of Elections to get Primo off the ballot. That didn't mean the Republicans were leaving the outcome to chance :

While Bruno's camp maintains it had nothing to do with the four Democrats who objected . . . Bruno's attorneys came out in force. During the hearing, where the state Board of Elections was supposed to defend its position, Bruno's attorneys . . . took over. Todd Valentine, an attorney for the state board, only asked one question of the seven witnesses who testified.

We see that the Republicans understand how significant having a challenger is. Had there been an aggressive challenger, the Bruno FBI investigation may very well have come to light BEFORE the election. And if the Dems had been able to field a challenger and Bruno actually had to defend his own seat, it may have discouraged some of his enthusiasm for sending funds from his re-election campaign coffers to other races across the state. What we might have avoided:

$98,953.00  PLUG POWER INC.  OTHER - LOSS ON SALE OF STOCKS
$18,901.50  MECHANICAL TECH INC.  OTHER - LOSS ON SALE OF STOCKS

This is a small part of what could have been on the table during the 2006 State Senate elections cycle. NY State Senate Democrats could have very well shared in the great wave of progressive reform sweeping the country. Instead, they may have to buy their way to the majority with massively long and expensive campaign fights… the first of which we will see this month.

Howard Dean's 50 state strategy, to challenge EVERY seat held by the Republicans and "build[ing] a strong opposition party with a clear message of change" is the right way to elect representatives to our government. We need to end the backroom wheeling and dealing that leads to incompetence and corruption.

** This from the Times

In July 2001, Mr. Bruno took credit for securing $500,000 in state money for a joint research project involving Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy and Plug Power Inc., a maker of fuel cells, near Albany, that has had contracts with the state and received other government assistance. At the time, Mr. Bruno was a shareholder in both Plug Power and a sister company, Mechanical Technology. He bought stock in both firms in 2000, according to his financial disclosure reports.

Mr. McArdle said the senator sold his shares in both companies in 2005 at a loss.

Okay...the article says that Bruno bought and sold the stock...NOT THE CAMPAIGN!

What is Bruno doing with such large stock holdings within his campaign fund? Might be legal, but, man, does this leave the door wide open for all sorts of nasty pay to play games.

We've got some work ahead of us.

It does, doesn't it? (0.00 / 0)
Apparently... in New York... it's legal. There was something on this in the paper the other day. Let me see if I can find the article. If I recall correctly, Bruno claims to have invested his campaign funds in various stocks. Various stocks that just happen to be of companies that are major campaign contributors who just happen to receive largess from the Senate Majority Leader.

All legal of course.

Imagine that.

Its not surprising that the NYS Dems (4.00 / 1)
dissed the 50 state strategy plan with both Clinton and Schumer's feet planted firmly in the DLC.  The sad story is that they'll probably continue to do things the way they do no matter how many times they lose elections.

campaign bought stocks? (4.00 / 2)
I long for the day when I can read something about NY politics and not have to spit out my drink and scream something no children should ever have to hear.

Are you sure that he was buying stocks with campaign donations and writing off subsequent losses?  It sure looks that way from what i just read but I can't believe this is possible.  Employees of Plug Power give money to Joe Bruno and Joe Bruno can turn around and use that money to buy Plug Power shares?  Meanwhile he is securing tax dollar for Plug Power.  If this is legal there is something very wrong with the...ok, one more thing very wrong with the campaign financing laws of NY.  I think the word needs to get out about this.  Anyone with a pulse should see that this is just wrong.

see for yourself (4.00 / 1)
http://www.elections...

I can't find a contribution to match... or an expenditure to them other than this... weird isnt' it? Also weird that the NYT only reported that Bruno owns the stock and yet, there is is...

No wonder he doesnt want anyone campaigning against him huh?

I have some trouble with your argument (0.00 / 0)
I agree with the fifty state strategy.  I agree that if Bruno had a challenger the scandal would have probably come up earlier.  My problem is with the assertion that if he had a challenger, we might have a Democratic Senate.  Premo would have lost regardless.  He might have prevented Bruno from campaigning and donating to others but I'm not sure if that would have changed anything on election day.  In addition, I think Saratoga Dems defected from Premo because of the Gillibrand race.  Saratoga county is shared by Gillibrand and Bruno and consists of a third of Gillibrand's district.  Had Premo run, Republicans would likely turnout in greater numbers because Bruno would be campaigning in his own district and Gillibrand may not be in Congress right now.  I'm not saying that its a good thing that Premo didn't make it on the ballot.  I'm just giving NY Dems the benefit of the doubt in this particular case.

I've been looking at (4.00 / 2)
Bruno's numbers and they are incredibly weak. Let's start with the understanding that he is very beatable.

Yes, had he not been successful in getting his challenger off the ballot... and make no mistake that his challenger being thrown from the ballot was all Bruno...

and boy was he pissed... the only reason Canestrari had a challenger was that Bruno had a challenger and Bruno was retaliating for the nerve of Dems to actually challenge him)

... then he would have concentrated his efforts on his own reelection.

While I cannot say precisely what happened with the Saratoga Democrats it had the appearnace of them deciding to support Joe Bruno because of his power and money and not wanting to risk his wrath.

It had nothing at all to do with Rep. Gillibrand's race.

Similarly, the Democrat in Rensselaer County that bucked the party and supported Bruno in his effort to get Premo thrown off the ballot was also under the thumb of Bruno. His son and son-in-law owe their jobs to Bruno.

Lastly, the bulk of Bruno's district is in Rensselaer County not Saratoga County. Similarly, the bulk of the votes in Rensselaer County in Bruno's district are in Mike McNulty's 21st CD (Troy, Rensselaer and the 2 Greenbush's) rather than in Kirsten Gillibrand's 20th CD.

While a challenger to Bruno would have activated Bruno's supporters and increased the Republican turn-out it would not have done so in a manner strong enough (more accurately, wide enough) to have affected Gillibrand's race.

Premo may or may not have beaten Bruno. The FBI report may or may not have come to light earlier. But a challenge to Bruno would have shown just how weak his numbers really are and there would be no debate left about taking him on again. It would be an obvious move.

To me, it is an obvious move. Joe Bruno can be beaten. The people are ready. It is time.

They can all be beaten (4.00 / 1)
The lesson from the 50 state strategy, is that the ALL CAN be BEATEN. But if we dont challenge and FIGHT for every seat, they DEFINALTEY WONT BE BEATEN.

We as a party will be destroyed by the stratgizing of who should go where, let's not try here no because there would be a better chance later, blah blah blah.

If Hall and Gillibrand didn't fight for those "unwinnable" seats, if the grassroots wasn't out their rooting for them while the established wanted to use their investment more "wisely," we'd be stuck with the "nice grandmotherly lady who's "good" on the enviroment."  Hall's real campaign and Take19 grassroots efforts flushed out the selfish entitled, Tom Delay-voting right winger she is. And Sweeney, well, his lovely story would be just so much dust under the rug as he bullied his way thru NY and US issues with his buddies again. Think, if no Webb, no one would have seen how racist and stupid Allen really is, if no Barak Obama and all HIS  grassroots/netroots support, then Jack Ryan could have waltzed into that Senate seat.

We know the press doesn't "bother" with races that the conventional wisdom is they aren't "competitive." But an all out fight accross every seat. That would be news.

Think of if we had challenged EVERY Senate Republican Senate seat, really, including Bruno. The tsunami would have been ours too. And we would have a Senate with real reformers and and progressives there -- we could have had OUR first 100 hours...

The defection of the Saratoga Dems (4.00 / 2)
all ties in with Bruno's racing involvement .  He made available a lot of money for Saratoga Springs, including SPAC.

"Three Saratoga Springs City Council members have supported Bruno so far. Finance Commissioner Matt McCabe backed Bruno earlier. All thanked him for continuous support of vital city projects. They said the majority leader has found funds for NYRA loans, SPAC, and the downtown City Center. But, McTygue said the biggest boost was the over $2.5 million in VLT impact money".

I'm really impressed with how much money Bruno is "able to find".
