BREAKING: (NY-25) Jim Walsh To Retire

by: phillip anderson

Wed Jan 23, 2008 at 22:17:43 PM EST

I had a feeling this was going to happen. Walsh's heart just hasn't been in it in the past 6 months or so. And here we are. The Politico is reporting that Jim Walsh is indeed set to retire.

Jim Walsh to Retire

Republican Rep. Jim Walsh of New York is expected to announce his retirement soon, according to a GOP aide familiar with the decision, giving Democrats another pick-up opportunity following a wave of Republican retirements this cycle.

The veteran appropriator had a tough reelection fight in 2006 and was expected to face another challenge in the fall.

It marks another surprise retirement for the GOP. Moderates Republicans have been particularly depleted in recent years, both through retirements and losses in the 2006 midterm. As a result, House Republicans have adopted a more conservative thrust during the 110th Congress.

Dan Maffei gave Walsh a hell of a run in '06. Now he's running for an open seat in D+3 district.

NY-25 is about to get a serious upgrade in the quality of their congressional representation. Maffei is a strong progressive and very much the real deal. Now he's going to Washington.

This one is a pickup.

This is huge... (0.00 / 0)
Rumors were swirling in the past that Walsh might do this. As it turns out, those rumors came true.

Now you might have to wonder about guys like Kuhl and Reynolds. Will they follow suit?

Quit, Tom , Quit! (4.00 / 1)
My new mantra.

We've got some work ahead of us.

I love it (0.00 / 0)
when I have more $ to budget for giving to other races!! :)

Powers, Massa and Maffie (4.00 / 4)
I'm really optomistic.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Amen... (0.00 / 0)
I am too. I've met Maffei. He's a very intelligent guy who knows a lot of issues. He had high praise for Jon Powers (at that point, he hadn't met him) and really was optimistic about his chances in Nov. 2008.

Anyone care to speculate on which Republicans... (0.00 / 0)
might run?

As Is Often the Case (0.00 / 0)
Liz Benjamin has the answer.  these five have apparently expressed interest in the position

- Onondaga County DA Bill Fitzpatrick.
- Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks.
- Former Syracuse City Councilman Rick Guy.
- Current Councilman Ryan McMahon.
- Former Onondaga County Legislative Chairman Dale Sweetland

She also lists five more Republicans whose names have come up, as well as this update:

Another Syracuse-area politics watcher wrote in to say:

"You better put Matt Driscoll, Mayor of Syracuse, up on your list for potential candidates for the Walsh seat. He's term limited and passed up running for Onondaga County Exec. The Dems owe him (for being a team player and not running when there was a split in the party) and they aren't going to let Maffei run for an open seat. Driscoll is the front runner."

excellent news!! (0.00 / 0)
Good to see Jimbo giving up like this.

But is Maffei guaranteed the Dem nomination for this? I have a feeling that now that it's a much easier run a bunch of other dems will jump into the race and challenge Maffei.

I hope the progressives in CD25 make sure that the Dem is a progressive and not a DLC-er or Repub-lite, given the Dem edge in this district.

Maybe, maybe not... (0.00 / 0)
At this point, it would be crazy for Dems to challenge Maffei. He already has a pretty sizeable war chest (at last check, over $300,000) and he's garnered a lot of Democratic support for this run.

It might be appealing, but Maffei has the best shot of anyone (Democrat or Republican) for that seat.

Maffei starts ahead (0.00 / 0)
plus he's got good name recognition from his last run.

It would be an uphill climb for anyone who wasn't high profile to jump in.

Good news! (0.00 / 0)
Well, now, don't that just make a cloudy January morning a bit brighter!  Out with the dysfunctional old crew, in with some people with some better ideas.

Wow, this is great news! (0.00 / 0)

Maffei did so well in his last race, and with more party support (ahem) he might have won -- he is terrific and now that the seat is open, people and institutions that didn't get behind his last race will jump all over it.

He really deserves it.

that's great! (0.00 / 0)
Open seats are instantly top tier. Maffei having run before (with strong SEIU support) means he's in great shape. This one will be fun!
