SD-61: Since Rath retirement, several candidates are possible replacements

by: robert.harding

Tom Precious of The Buffalo News has a piece in today's paper about the Rath retirement. It's a pretty solid summary of why Mary Lou Rath wants out and the most important part in all this - who will be vying for her seat from the Republican and Democratic sides.

The succession race was already on Monday. Most Republicans give the early edge to Assemblyman James Hayes of Amherst, who has long eyed the Rath seat. But he said Monday his "total focus" right now is his current job as the ranking Republican on the Assembly Ways and Means Committee - which makes him the point person for Assembly Republicans in deciphering and critiquing Spitzer's 2008 budget proposal.

A couple of years ago, it would have been a slam dunk decision for Hayes. But with the Democrats threatening to take over the Senate, will it make sense for him to leave a senior position he has in the Assembly GOP to try for a Senate seat he could lose and for a legislative chamber that could turn Democratic?

"He'll be a very strong contender; I am hopeful he'll be our candidate," Bruno said.

Other Republicans mentioned include Michael Ranzenhofer, a county legislator from Amherst, and Dr. Barry Weinstein, a former minority leader in the County Legislature and now an Amherst Town Board member.

On the Democratic side, Dan Ward, a former county legislator and former Amherst supervisor who also unsuccessfully ran for county executive, quickly announced his candidacy Monday.

In a possibly interesting family twist, Ward's sister-in-law, Erie County Legislator Michelle Iannello said she also is possibly interested.

So, too, is former Amherst Supervisor Susan Grelick, who answered a question about her possible candidacy by checking off her childhood in Kenmore, her involvement in the issues and a long listing of her involvement with local civic and cultural groups. "I definitely will look at it," she said.

One person who won't be running, Rath said, is her son, Edward Rath III, who was recently elected to the County Legislature.

It's interesting to note that Rath's son is out of the running. He was seen, at one point, as the heir to that State Senate seat. Now, it seems the GOP will be looking elsewhere.

Two candidates on the Democratic side that I know of who are considering a run are Iannello and Ward. Iannello, according to my Genesee County Democratic sources, is a very strong candidate and seems well prepared about a possible run in the 61st. Ward also hopes to meet with the Genesee County Dems to talk about a possible run as well.

The early favorite on the Republican side seems to be Hayes. There's also speculation that Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R-C-I, Batavia) may also be eyeing the seat.

This will be interesting. I'll have more of an analysis later.

that trial balloon about rath's son (0.00 / 0)
went nowhere.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

For sure... (0.00 / 0)
I remember a few weeks ago people were saying behind the scenes that he was going to be "it." He was going to take over for mommy when she retires. Apparently Bruno and Co. have their eyes on the prize and don't see the younger Rath as an experienced (or qualified) candidate.

They could go with Hayes. Hayes would be a sensible option. I heard a few people say Hawley, but he would need to sell himself to the Erie County GOP. The Republicans are assuming that Genesee County, with its Republican voters, will just fall in line and vote GOP all the way. I'm not so sure.

Steve Hawley will not be a strong candidate (0.00 / 0)
The assembly seat he represents has Genesee as only a small portion maybe 10% of the SD so his incumbancy will be a limited asset as he is largely unknown Senate seatwide and would run poorly in Erie against an Erie Democrat.  I am glad I nailed it with Ianello in my earlier bench strength post.

Hawley's district (4.00 / 1)
Includes 9 of the 13 towns in Genesee County. (See the map here.) It also includes the City of Batavia.

The district leans Republican (about 8,000 more Republicans than Democrats) and Hawley should, in the GOP's mind, ensure victory in Genesee County. Most of that 8,000 voter advantage is in Genesee County, where there is about 7,000 more Republicans than Democrats. Erie County will be pretty even, no matter who is in contention. Genesee County will decide this.

Also, there's a reason why Erie Dems are reaching out to Genesee County. Erie County isn't going to decide this race. Genesee County will.

Robert, I realize it contains 9 of 13 Towns, I also looked at the map! (0.00 / 0)
But those nine towns even with Batavia make up only about 10% of the districts registered voter.  A state senate seat as you know is equal to 2.5 assembly seats in size.  In some cases like Aubertine, almost the whole AD falls inside the senate seat meaning Aubertine has about 40% familiar turf to run in.  This SD 61 seems to have bits and pieces of nearly half a dozen assembly seats.  BTW have you picked a weekend and location for your SD 48 campaign visit?  I want to coordinate mine to yours if at all possible.

Again... (0.00 / 0)
The Democratic candidate has gotten blown out in Genesee County for as long as I can remember. That goes for State Senate seats, State Assembly seats and congressional races. Rath won by a huge margin there in the last election. To ignore Genesee County would be a poor decision. Doing so would put all your weight into Erie County HOPING that they lean your way. And since you're not focusing on Genesee (not you, but the candidate) you have to make up in Erie County whatever you will lose in Genesee County.

So let's say you lose by 8,000 votes in Genesee County, which CAN happen if the Democratic candidate ignores it. That means you will have to win Erie County - and win big. One person here mentioned that, of all places, Amherst would decide this. I don't think so. The Erie County portion of the 61st is 50/50. It can lean one way or the other, but it's not going to be a blow out.

That's where Genesee County comes in. If you make it competitive in Genesee County, things get interested. Let's say you only lose by 1,000 or 2,000 votes, or maybe you win Genesee County (a reach, but it could happen) - then you're looking at a very nice set up for you. You go into Erie County and you could finish in a tie in Erie County and still win the district.

As for your question, I'm looking at the last weekend before the elections (Feb. 22-24) to head up to the North Country for some campaigning. Should be fun. I look forward to seeing you and others there.

I think we are leaning toward Feb 15 - 17th but may return following. (0.00 / 0)
I was not posting that Genesee portion is not important to campaign in and be competitive in, I was argueing that a candidate from that Assembly seat for the Rep side would be in huge trouble because he only has 10% of SD base to run from.  Any word about the sole Democratic CL from Batavia as a candidate?

Great (0.00 / 0)
You might be able to catch the Oswego debate then, if that's where you're headed.

Steve Hawley in the 139th seems to be targeting the seat no matter what the Erie County GOP wants. To me, that's a good thing for a few reasons. One, he's showing what a lot more politicians should do - that Erie County isn't alone in these fights and that they will need outside help. Two, it's good for us because if he forces a primary fight, it will be tougher than people think.

Hawley had a good rapport with Rath, so that might help him.

As for the Democratic legislator in Genesee, nothing I've heard suggest that they have thought about running.
