Bruno Accuses OTHERS of Laundering?

I had to rub my eyes in disbelief when I saw this quote in the NY Post today.
"If I were them, I wouldn't be talking about campaign-finance reform on one hand, then on the other hand doing a $25,000 price of admission to funnel money - launder money, into a Senate contest," Bruno said.
This from the guy who LOANED money from his campaign committee to companies at a high rate, and received interest payments that exceeded what would have been allowed under campaign finance laws.... See Dr. Love's excellent diary on "Skirting Campaign Finance Laws"

Klein To The Rescue

State Sen. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, who is the new deputy Senate minority leader and co-chair of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, just released the following statement:

"It is the height of hypocrisy for Joe Bruno to talk about a fair campaign when he has a well-documented history of creating sham political campaign committees to circumvent the State's campaign finance laws. Democrats will follow the letter and spirit of the State's campaign finance laws. Hopefully, Joe Bruno's Republican machine will do the same."

nteresting twist. What Klein is referring to here, I believe, is New York Forward, a campaign committee created by the Senate Republicans in 2004 to skirt Election Law by funneling money to preferred primary candidates.

One of those candidates was fromer Assemblyman Stephen Kaufman, a Bronx Democrat who said he would sit with the Republicans if he won in the 34th SD race to replace former GOP Sen. Guy Velella, who lost his job when he pleaded guilty to felony bribery charges.

...

The GOP insisted New York Forward was an independent committee, not affiliated with the Senate majority, even though it was formed with seed money from Bruno's campaign committee, shared an address with the Republican Senate Campaign Committee and its treasurer, Troy developer John Hedley, was a Bruno contributor.

The Democrats argued it was, in fact, a tool of the majority, and noted GOP senators who had already maxed out on contributions to Kaufman used New York Forward as a means to assist him and other candidates will mail and other services that would normally be considered in-kind contributions.

The Senate Democrats sued in an effort to get New York Forward dissolved. They won an out-of-court settlement in which the GOP agreed to shut the committee down and never form a similar one.

TODAY is day one. It always is.
