Field Clears for Maffei

Here's some good news: It looks like Dan Maffei has effectively clinched the Democratic nomination to contest the open seat of retiring GOP Rep. Jim Walsh. The affable and progressive Maffei, who barely lost against the entrenched Walsh in 2006, quickly earned the support of the DCCC and most of the state's House delegation after Walsh announced his surprise decision. It looks like that support paid dividends for Maffei today, as his potential primary opponent, Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll, announced that he won't pursue the nomination after several weeks of consideration. Maffei is looking strong to bring this D+3.4 seat into the blue column.

This is great news and I love that Cook PVI D+3.4 with no TOP TIER Republican challenger in the race!

UPDATEOur friends at the Rochester Turning site actually beat me and The Swingstate Project to this news at 6:50AM. Don't you north country folks ever sleep in?

I won't say Maffei is a lock, but he's the favorite in NY-25. I know we've been having debates about Democratic primaries recently, but Maffei is very deserving to run for this seat without a primary challenge. He came very close to beating Walsh in '06 and is certainly looking like he will become Rep. Dan Maffei in Jan. 2009.

When you come as close as that against the incumbent and now it is an open seat and Democratic leaning as well he is the best and deserving a wide open field!

I honestly do not understand why other Democrats even CONSIDERED entering the field. I mean... Driscoll? GMAFB.

Maffei almost beat Walsh last time.. why would ANYONE think they could raise anything near the level of support Maffei had?

If Driscoll wanted in, he would have to declare a lot earlier than early March to challenge Maffei. But still, Maffei is too strong. He nearly beat Walsh in '06 and would have beat him in '08. But hey, we will take an open seat anytime!
