Shortest. Press. Conference. Ever.

That was quick. Eliot apologized to the public, but did not, in fact, resign. "I must dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family", he said. He then said that he would "get back to you."

What exactly just happened?

I think he doesn;t want to make such a decision in the heat of the moment (0.00 / 0)
he wants to sleep on it and then probably resign later

Why resign? (4.00 / 1)
Seriously.
Bruno is under federal investigation and he's not budging.

If Spitzer hired a call-girl, he's a jackass and his wife should do what she needs to do.
Spitzer will lose his moral authority now BUT that does not mean the Senate Democrats or the Assembly Democrats need to cower. Come out strong and continue going after Bruno and his minions. Keep fighting the good fight.

Because if he doesn't resign, the voters will resign him (4.00 / 1)
and the senate dems.

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until all the facts are out in the open, but if they do end up being like they seem to be, he owes it to the NY Democratic Party to resign or he will take everyone down with him at the polls

[ Parent ]
If he does (0.00 / 0)
If he does resign, then he better damned well take some shots on the way out. Hit Bruno over the head with the FBI.
I think it all depends what he did.
Did he go thorugh with hiring the prostitute or did he just make a call to set it up?

[ Parent ]
I'm done with him (0.00 / 0)
I think you will find that women (who do, after all, make up the majority of voters) were already uncomfortable with the "fighter" or "steamroller" persona he portrayed, and this crosses the line into an area that is entirely unacceptable.

I think he should resign; anything short of that is just asking to revitalize the Republican party in NY.

[ Parent ]
Steamroller (4.00 / 1)
I was not uncomfortable with the steamroller persona, but if only it had been used to some ethical PURPOSE.

I'm sorry, I am pissed off and very sad, but I think back on everything I've written about Spitzer since BEFORE he was elected and all I can recall is a train of disappointments - some little, some large.  The way he refused to debate Suozzi,  the way he handled the comptroller vacancy, the way Cuomo kept outshining him (and I disliked Cuomo a lot), the way he got entangled with Bruno and the ethical lapses there, the immigration licensing issue being hauled out at the wrong time.  It's all been hope and waiting for him to get into the firm groove -- and by God, there WAS no groove, is it not time to admit it to ourselves now?

Now we're on our own.  I'm not just talking about Democrats, but everybody.  It's not like the GOP has anyone who can run this state.  And our upstate Dems have been sold up the river on this.  It's not like this is going to hurt the downstate party all that much.

[ Parent ]
You forgot.... (4.00 / 3)
...that additional disappointment when he decided to keep gadzillions of Pataki-appointed hacks in place, denying employment to quite a number of very talented Democrats who had been waiting for up to a dozen years for a chance to work in NYS government at the level their qualifications prepared them for.

Yep.  One disappointment after the next.

That was the most useless statement, and it's only going to fuel the fire through the afternoon and evening news cycle.

We got no answers or information about anything, so this was perhaps the worst possible appearance that he could have had.

No news source that I can find is saying that this statement was in any way helpful.

Thank you (0.00 / 0)
For helping Joe Bruno keep the state senate.  I hope he steps down then Patterson is Gov then the Temp. Pres of the Senate. (Bruno) fills in for his roles.

He put his personal needs first, again (0.00 / 0)
His family's needs should not be his priority when he is taking the work of thousands-- tens of thousands, actually-- of hard-working democrats down with his personal failings.

What about that breakfast date tomorrow with all of upstate that needs economic revitalization, dude?  Should we call Silda and ask if she could spare you, if you aren't too busy apologizing?  SHEESH.
