by: robert.harding

The Republicans of the New York State Legislature are threatening Gov. Eliot Spitzer with impeachment if he does not resign within the next 48 hours.

so i take i that (4.00 / 3)
uncle joe, a man who has been under federal investigation for two years for, ya know, actual public corruption, is going to call it quits as well?

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Well... (0.00 / 0)
I want to know how the Republicans plan on getting this through the Assembly. Not that it will happen, based on the rumors we're hearing, but they face an uphill battle with that from the start.

Let Jimmy get his jollies and overreach to a point where there will be a public backlash.

Gotta love Tedisco... (0.00 / 0)
He's been a favorite of mine for some time now.

For the record... (0.00 / 0)
I would love to see Spitzer resign on say, Friday, and then see what the Republicans do.

Wankers...

The GOP threatening to impeach Spitzer if he doesn't leave voluntarily?  Good.

Whatever it takes.

Actually.... (0.00 / 0)
If he had resigned sooner, they would not be able to take credit for it.  Now, they will be able to say they "forced Spitzer to resign."  Not good for fellow dems.  But, overall, yeah, good.  The longer he stays the more damage is done.  Thank goodness for Paterson's sense of humor-- that will help make a very difficult transition a bit easier.

We cannot afford Impeachment! (4.00 / 1)
I know this story is huge right now, but this is something we really kind of can't forget about...

OUR STATE BUDGET IS DUE IN 21 DAYS!

We don't have time for this impeachment crap.  We have no time to waste...and the Governor is wasting it by not resigning.

RESIGN so we can get down some very important business: PASSING THE BUDGET!

From what I recall, we elected Spitzer to fight the Repub legislature. (0.00 / 0)
This is as good of a topic as any to fight them on.

By the way, what exactly are the grounds for impeachment? Are legal grounds even necessary? They conveniently left this out of the story.

So, folks, who knows the NY State Constitution?

sometimes there are battles (4.00 / 1)
where you're already losing if you have to enter the battle.

I think this is one of them.

Now he has to stay 72 hours (0.00 / 0)
at least.

Another thought (0.00 / 0)
If NY Republicans pursue an impeachment on this, it really has the potential to damage their brand nationally.  Already, it's brought attention to the politicized firing of US attorneys and the reason for those firings.  And it's keeping the Seigelman story alive.  Of course, NY Republicans really are selfish and dumb enough to tank their own party to get Spitzer, so I shouldn't chortle.  But it would hurt them a lot more than it would Dems, at least nationally.

nobody but nobody (0.00 / 0)
cares about the NYS GOP or what they do.

The national party does not care about them.  There is no damage they can do to that brand if they're already deemed irrelevant.

Why would it damage any brand anyway?  Is Spitzer Mr. Popularity nationally?

The only thing it would do is rile up a bunch of national bloggers who know (or care) relatively little about New York State politics.  They're already starting with the whining about how Spitzer shouldn't resign because the investigation into his activities was weird.  Spare me.

Of course it was weird.  But you can figure out what happened there, whether he resigns or not.  I just don't get the logic:  "The investigation was fishy, ergo, Spitzer must not resign or else we'll never get to the bottom of it."  Say what?  How does it help us find out the truth if Spitzer stays in office?  His staying in office is irrelevant to any investigation of the investigation.

HOWEVER... these bloggers live on blog hits, and for them to glom onto the Spitzer story is very sexy, even if their logic about whether or not he needs to resign is kind of faulty.  Spitzer is a very hot topic now, and boy they need those hits to keep a-comin.
