NY-21: Phil Steck's Five Years of Opposing the Iraq War

by: Soundpolitic

Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 16:38:23 PM EDT

Five years ago today, the President appeared on our televisions and announced he had given military orders unprecedented in our nation's history.  Moments later, we watched as bombs flew over Baghdad as the needless bloodshed began.  And every day for five years, innocent blood has continued to spill, and promising lives have been lost because of lies.

And for every day of those five years, Congressional candidate Phil Steck has staunchly opposed and fought against the War in Iraq.  I believe nobody in this crowded field of primary candidates is more qualified, more sincere, and able in his pledge to bring this war to an end as your Representative in Congress.  Today, Phil Steck released a statement outlining his feelings on the Iraq War, some of which I am compelled to share with my fellow voters.

Read about Phil Steck's five years of opposition to the occupation, and how it compares to other candidates, below the fold.

Soundpolitic :: NY-21: Phil Steck's Five Years of Opposing the Iraq War
Five years ago, this nation was misled into war on Iraq.  However, the Bush Administration's statements on the war did not ring true to me, and its unilateralist approach to foreign policy was fundamentally flawed.  Therefore, I was on record opposing the intervention in Iraq from the beginning and spoke out about this issue then as a member of the Albany County Legislature.
.....
To date, nearly 4,000 U.S. service men and women have been killed, and millions of Iraqis have been killed, are living as refugees in other countries, or have been displaced within Iraq.  My heart goes out to both my fellow Americans and the Iraqis who have suffered and are suffering as a result of this war.
.....
Close to $500 billion has been spent in Iraq and related conflicts.  This has compromised the ability of our government to be effective on the home front.  Now, as the nation spirals deeper into recession, the Bush Administration is asking Congress for at least another $102 billion.
.....
I believe Congress should fund withdrawal from Iraq not continuation of this fruitless war without evidence that there is any light at the end of the tunnel.   We must have he courage to end this unjustified war and let the Iraqi people be free to govern themselves and decide their own future.
.....
We need a Congress that will stand up for what's right:  ending this war and bringing the international criminal Osama bin Laden, and his organization, to justice.

All five of our Congressional candidates in 2008, including Darius Shahinfar, are outlining their opposition to the War now, and I believe we owe all of them our thanks for this.  No matter who wins this primary, we will have a Representative who is opposed to the war.

But will we have a Representative who is as committed as Phil Steck is to finally ending this thing?  Who will make absolutely certain we don't end up with a sixth, seventh, and eigth anniversary to the Iraq War?  2008 has to be about getting out of Iraq, once and for all.

2006 was supposed to be about getting out of Iraq.  And here we are, two years later, "celebrating" another "anniversary"...mouring another 2,000 needless deaths.  I think it's telling that Rep. Gillibrand ran on ending the war in 2006 and it's still going on, and now one of her aides is running in a neighboring district...

Darius Shahinfar's boss, Representative Gillibrand, is a pretty good Representative, but this link directs to a point where she (and perhaps Darius, as well) displayed less than staunch opposition to the Iraq War, joining other Blue Dogs in authorizing more of that funding because:

"It's one we believe the president will sign," Gillibrand, D-Greenport, said...While not ideal, the bill includes some accountability for the Bush administration, she said.  Gillibrand's vote in favor of the bill was opposite the position of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who voted against it.  Emphasis added.

I'd like to think that Darius Shahinfar, as Congressional aide for Rep. Gillibrand, pushed his boss to join progressive Democrats in Congress in saying we should not spend another dollar on this terrible war.  But I don't want to just think my next representative will do this...

...I want to know it. And I know for a fact that Phil Steck would have voted with the Speaker in a heartbeat.  That is the kind of decisive, progressive leadership we need representing the 21st Congressional District of New York.

Phil Steck's Purpose for Change features his opposition to the Iraq War front and center.

I am running for Congress because we need a representative who is committed to doing what it will take to begin to change the direction of our country. Over the last eight years, the Bush Administration has failed America's working families. Two failures where history will harshly judge this Presidency are the colossal failure in Iraq and this Administration's ability to take care of powerful friends at our expense.
.....
But frankly, we need to expect more from our fellow Democrats and hold them to the highest standards...We need Democrats who will stand up for our communities and our interests, and finally and forcefully work for the changes we need.
.....
There are cynics who say Washington can't change and we're better off just playing along. Well, that's not me, and that is certainly not what the Founding Fathers envisioned for our government. Others may find it politically convenient today to talk about change. But I have a history of making change.
.....
The purpose of working hard throughout my life has been to bring about change. This campaign for Congress is no different, and there is a clear purpose:

I believe we need to end this war in Iraq now.

That is what I believe in. If you share that belief, join us.

That is what I believe, to.  I also believe that the majority of voters in the district share that belief, and we can all come together around the most qualified candidate to finally put an end to this war...to put an end to the anniversaries and commence a new beginning for a moral American foreign policy.

I am a Steck for Congress volunteer. (0.00 / 0)
Full Disclosure:  I am an unpaid volunteer for the Steck for Congress campaign.  I have also signed up to recieve information from all the candidates, because I want to make the most informed choice as possible in this primary.  I have not recieved any assignments yet; but I blog out of my own desire to help my fellow voters be as informed as I am with regards to who can best represent us in Congress.  I remain unpaid so that I can reserve the right to change my mind.  That said, the remaining candidates have a lot of work to do to change it, and I remain committed to electing Phil Steck to Congress.  I hope you see things the same way, but I respect everybody's right to make their own choice.  Make the choice on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, and join me in pledging to support the nominee and send him or her to Congress together as Democrats.

Proof (0.00 / 0)
Where is the evidence that he has been against the war from the beginning?  Its easy to say that now in a Democratic district, but wheres the proof?  My understanding is he was only a recent addition as a sponsor to the anti-war resolution in the Albany County Legislature.  Also, isn't it a bad sign he couldn't persuade legislators in a heavily Democratic County to pass his resolution (yours was among the no votes).

No votes (0.00 / 0)
I was honestly not too happy with my legislator with that vote.  And he explained how difficult it is to vote on these things and why they can't pass.  I'd like to take his word on it; can't have everything though.  But Phil Steck took action when he could.  Despite a pass or fail end result is that Steck took a stand.

I haven't got the proof you're looking for.  But it's good that you're asking.  We do need to hold our candidates to their word so we'll have a representative who will, too.

Proof (0.00 / 0)
So, as I understand it, he wasn't the orginal sponsor of this resolution, he couldn't pursuade even the heavily Democratic Albany County Legislature to vote for this, but we are supposed to believe in Washington he will be able to pursuade Democrats from Mississippi and Kansas to support Single-payer and to oppose the war?  Where was this resolution 5 years ago when the war wasn't so unpopular?  Where is the op-ed piece from 5 years ago saying Bush is leading us down the wrong path?

I don't think we can take your word for it (nothing personal) that he as been an opponent for 5 years (especially considering you've already mentioned you don't know much about Colonie or why their town board flipped).

Don't take my word for it (0.00 / 0)
Ask the candidate.

I have provided emphasis to what I already quoted in the diary because they are Phil Steck's own words, laying out, himself, how he has opposed this war from the outset.  He's not talking about the more recent resolution he co-sponsored; he's talking about when it all started, five years ago.

So you don't have to take my word for it because I'm not making things up or looking for excuses.  I refuse to skip over what's right in front of my face in hopes I can dig something up from the past to negate the present.  And in 2008, it's the future we should be concerned with.

One thing you can take my word on: co-sponsorship of a bill in a legislature can be every bit as important and influential as its introduction, and perhaps even more so.  That's just the legislative process.  Case in point: there are still bills floating around the Assembly calendar that Paul Tonko introduced; since he's not around, if they get passed this session, it will be thanks to a co-sponsor.  Or if some freshman Assemblyman writes a bill and nobody notices, they will when the Chair of the Ways and Means Committee decides to co-sponor.

And I don't expect Phil Steck, once he is in Congress, to persuade every single Democrat in the House...hell, I hope we have 300 Democrats in the House by January :-) It should go without saying that we are sending him to much larger, much more complex legislature this year than the one he's been in for the past decade.  Yet he remains the only announced candidate to serve in a legislature AS a legislator.  And when it came down to dicey issues like the Iraq War, he took the tough stance, the right stance, while he was in a position as the final decision maker as representative.  We don't have believe our candidate will do everything...we just have believe they will do the right thing.

I hope you can take a step back, and come to the same conclusion I have: that in Congress, Phil Steck will continue taking a stand and doing the right thing as our next Representative.

I am pleased that Phil Steck (4.00 / 2)
is opposed to the war and am glad that he will be joining Darius Shahinfar at this Saturday's Remembering The Fallen peace walk at the State Capital commemorating those who have given their lives in Bush's ill-conceived war.

I am sorry you weren't able to join us at the Democracy for the Hudson-Mohawk Region candidate forum last month. Darius Shahinfar stated quite clearly that as U.S. Representative for the 21st District he would follow in Mike McNulty's footsteps by voting against further funding for Bush's disaster.

It was his strong opposition to the misguided and disasterous policies of the Bush administration in Iraq that lead him to take a leave of absence from his job with Albany County to move to Virginia for three months and run John Kerry's regional campaign office there back in 2004.

It is his strong belief that this war and the Bush/Cheney approach to foreign policy has made America less safe and the world less safe that had him joining Eric Massa, Steve Harrison, Darcy Burner, and a host of other Democratic Congressional challengers across the country in support of  "A Responsible Plan to End the Iraq War".

Some of Darius' views on the subject can be read in his diary here at The Albany Project. More will be coming out shortly.

For now suffice it to say that we are pleased that Phil Steck agrees with us on the urgency and importance of ending the war. We welcome his joining our efforts in this critical task facing us.

Peace,

Andrew

Right on (4.00 / 1)
More on the Responsible Plan:
There is no military solution in Iraq. Our current course unacceptably holds U.S. strategic fortunes hostage to events in Iraq that are beyond our control; we must change course. Using diplomatic, political, and economic power, we can responsibly end the war and removing all of our troops from Iraq.

Sounds like a sound plan to me.  And some of the endorsees are:
DONNA EDWARDS candidate for U.S. House, Maryland
ERIC MASSA candidate for U.S. House, New York
STEVE HARRISON candidate for U.S. House, New York
BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN JOHNS (U.S. ARMY RET.) specialist in counterinsurgency and nation building
CAPT. LARRY SEAQUIST (U.S. NAVY RET.) former commander of the U.S.S Iowa and former Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy Planning

I'd be one happy voter is all Democratic Congressional candidates signed up for something like this.
