NY-SD7: Johnson Picks Up Steam

by: SteveWFP

Wed Jan 24, 2007 at 20:05:08 PM EST

(From the diaries. Johnson has got all the mo right now. Now let's get out there and seal the deal. - promoted by lipris)

The Craig Johnson for State Senate campaign has gotten a slew of new endorsements in the last few days.  Adding to the efforts of groups like CWA are the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, which has over 2,000 members and is the largest law enforcement union on Long Island, and SEIU Local 32BJ, which has 60,000 members in New York and is the largest private sector union in New York and the largest property service workers union in the United States.

Here's why 32BJ endorsed Craig:

"By helping to pass a minimum wage bill in Nassau County, Craig Johnson has shown himself to be a strong supporter of Long Island's working families" said Mike Fishman, Local 32BJ President. "We look forward to working with him in Albany to raise standards for all New York's working families."

Last year, the Nassau County Legislature passed a living wage law that will raise minimum wages for workers contracted by the county to $9.50 an hour beginning in 2007. The minimum hourly pay rate will increase to $10.50 an hour in 2008, and again in 2010 to $12.50 an hour.

A TV ad and a way to help after the break.

Since I don't think I've seen it at TAP yet, NY Ed-PAC coupled there endorsement with a new commercial and a $250,000 ad buy.

Have I convinced you to come out on Saturday and knock on doors yet?  You can join other volunteers on Saturday at either the New Hyde Park LIRR Station at 10:45 AM or, if you're coming from New York City, at Penn Station under the LIRR Schedule Board at 9:45 AM.

13 days until Election Day!

Woah the PBA backs him? (4.00 / 1)
Really? Don't they hate Suozzi with the intensity of a thousand suns and the hate leaks over to other Nassau dems?

Good job.

SteveWFP, you are our OTHER TAPper of the Month... (0.00 / 0)
You and LarryInNYC both rock the place silly.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Interesting about 32BJ (4.00 / 1)
The divisions in SEIU are somewhat surprising, and quite contradictory towards the goals of Change to Win.  Anyway, in this situation I think it's a great way to combat the intentions of Dennis Rivera in his hopes to preserve the status quo and his bffl's Senate majority.

Endorsements (0.00 / 0)
Hey, BingChester, glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that 32BJ and 1199 are supporting completely different candidates.  I'd be interested to see some of the other endorsements - i.e., UNITE Here, CWA, Teamsters, etc.

A lot of the Republicans have (sort of) supported 1199's healthcare agenda, and of course so long as the GOP is still in power in the Senate, they want to remain on good terms.

Losing Spano was, no doubt, a blow to them

Communications Workers endorsed Johnson (0.00 / 0)
and are running a phonebank for him in NYC.  Come out and volunteer -

Communications Workers of America

I would love to! Except ... (0.00 / 0)
... I'm in Albany.

Thanks for the info, though.

I find it interesting that one of the lobbying er, I mean "government relations" firms that represents 1199 also represents a bunch of the unions that are lending support to Johnson.

I won't say which firm, but I'm sure it would be easy enough to figure out.

Where Was the WFP in November? (0.00 / 0)
Great to see the WFP doing work here.  But let us not pretend that the WFP is doing this out of some "high moral ground quest".  It is more than happy to sit back and let machine politics run its course.  Where was the WFP this November when it failed to support any of the progressive canidates in Queens running agains Republican and Democratic Senate Stooges.

Had the WFP stoop up for "working families" in November, Democrats would be about to take control the Senate.  Instead it support corrupt political deals between the Queens County Political Mafia.

Mike Arcuri, Kirsten Gillibrand, Eric Massa - you might have heard some of these names.

Politics: The Allocation of Scarce Resources (4.00 / 1)
It seems that was the big focus - some thought as a backlash the Senate would officially go blue in 06, however my money has always been on 08.  There was too much other important work to be done in 06.

Now, if only we can get those district lines un-Gerrymandered ...

point well made (0.00 / 0)
scarce resources is right on the money
