as we were putting this thing together. the state party very much wanted the money to go through them and we told them that a pretty sizeable portion of the netroots would certainly prefer to bypass them and give directly to craig's campaign. to my great surprise, they immediately acknowledged that they understood this and were very open to the idea of allowing those who so choose to donate directly to the candidate. one of the things that is so promising to me about this event and how it came about, is that the state party recognizes that there is a definite and discernible degree of antipathy and distrust between the net/grassroots and the party establishment and they are looking to do whatever they can to ameliorate this gulf. besides this being a venture to raise funds for a hugely important race, they are also looking at this as an opportunity to build trust and demonstrate some basic competence.

i understand your concerns and share them for the most part. lord knows i have been rather hard on the state party around here. but, i'm also pretty excited about the potential for building some pretty powerful and effective relationships not only between the netroots and the state party establishment, but also amongst the NY netroots themselves.

i give a lot of credit to our new co-chair of the state party, dave pollak. he "gets it". he knows that there is much mending of fences and building of bridges to be done and he seems more than willing to do the work necessary to make that happen.

i certainly hope that everyone at the event (4.00 / 2)

who wishes to will get a chance to shake the governor's hand and say hello. there is some sort of VIP thing before the event. (i wasn't part of planning that, so i'm a bit sketchy on the details) but, after that it will be a whole bunch of people in a bar with the guv. it's not a huge place either. in fact, the one impediment folks may find to meeting the governor may be just finding a way across the room as it's sure to be packed.

that said, shaking the man's hand is free.

You tend to be able to get handshakes and photos much more readily than usual.
I'm sure the politicians in attendance are more then willing to give a handshake and a greeting.

P.S. even if the place is packed (and this event probably isn't going to be) your more then likely to bump into many politicians you have heard of and wish to meet. (I meet Rep. Hagel at one of these along with Silver and Senator Schumer )

The venue (Prey) (4.00 / 2)

is pretty small -- your typical storefront bar.  If there's any kind of crowd at all it will actually be pretty difficult not to come into fairly intimate contact with most of the people there.

I also heard a rumor that up to fifteen sitting state senators will be there.
