Barber bus travels the rural roads, kicking off SD 51 campaign

by: robinia

The Democratic Rural Conference is beginning events in Saratoga today... without Governor Paterson, who  picks governing over politics and will stay in Albany to work on the budget, rather than speaking to the crowd as scheduled. Some may miss seeing the Governor speak, but, they will be pleasantly surprised when Don Barber addresses the crowd as scheduled.

A week ago, building up to the theme of taking the State Senate, SD 51 candidate Don Barber and a bus full of supporters traveled all seven counties of the 51st SD, stopping at seven venues to announce the kickoff of Barber's campaign.  It was fun-- although the gerrymandered district is too far-flung to be easy to traverse. Here is a map .

Herkimer Progressive did a good post on the stop in Little Falls-- check it out here.  Some other TAP folks have left comments here, too-- like folks throughout the district, they met the bus at one of the seven stops and cheered Don on as he made his campaign kick-off speech. A busload of supporters traveled the entire route, 4:30 AM to 6:30 PM-- and, I can tell you, because I saw it with my own eyes, had a really upbeat time of it cheering Don on.

The speech was very good, and tailored to each of the seven stops, Catskill, Cobleskill, Little Falls, Oneonta, Sherburne, Cortland and Caroline.  For me, the high point was probably either Cortland-- where frisky cows kicked up their heels at the commotion while Don gave his campaign-kick-off speech at his Mother's relatives' farm.... or, maybe Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton's passionate speech in Caroline about why we need good, solid Dems like Don in the Senate in Albany, to end the frustrating gridlock.  The low point was definitely Oneonta, where the local press did not show up (only one of the seven stops for that-- good coverage, including TV, most of the way).  Were they scared?  Bought off?  Oneonta was also the only place where a "counter-demonstration" to Don's campaign kick-off took place: about 35 people with professionally-printed signs reading "This is Seward Country!" lined the street opposite our kick-off event in the public square downtown.  It was creepy, some were laughing in a way I found menacing.  Did they think that Seward even having an opponent announce was cause for protest? Some democracy, that.

Back on the bus, one of my fellow supporters repeated that old Gandhi saying: first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.  That made us feel better.  The group had marvelous esprit de corps, and enthusiastic supporters met... and FED... us everywhere we stopped.

Can one genuine candidate who truly wants to "be your voice in Albany" and "carry your dreams to Albany" really prevail over the entrenched, semi-feudal state that has prevailed over Seward's 22 years in office?  If the determination of the candidate, his staff, and his supporters is an indication, it is entirely possible.  People beleive, as Don said, that "we deserve better."

Preplanned Protest met Barber For Senate bus (4.00 / 1)
Professionally printed signs saying "This is Seward Country" and carried by about 20 people some with small chldren met the approximately 100 Barber For Senate supporters in Oneonta.  No Oneonta press people were in sight because the local paper "does not cover events on the weekends".  However, according to a press release Seward's campaign is not underway so stated by the Senator himself. Seward stated, "while some are starting the political silly season early, I am focused on getting results in a state budget that helps with property taxes, gasoline and home heating costs..."  The question is Jim what have you been doing for 22 years?  Why are the prices for gasoline and home heating oil so high?  Is it because of your buddy GW Bush and the war in Iraq?

Folks, we deserve better in the 51st District.  We deserve a person who will work hard to improve conditions in Upstate New York.  With a proven track record Don Barber will work with ALL in Albany to represent ALL of us. Here's a letter to the editor from the Oneonta Daily Star dated April 3rd:

Barber would work for us all

On March 29, I attended a rally held at Oneonta's Muller Plaza for Don Barber, the Democratic candidate for state Senate who is opposing Jim Seward. Don and his supporters arrived by bus to greet the local supporters, who had turned out in the cold to welcome him.

As Don shook hands with individuals in the enthusiastic crowd, a line of Seward supporters strung out on the opposite side of the street, holding up signs. Several of these signs read: "This is Seward country." While I respect their right to show support for their senator, I was offended by the attitude of entitlement that those signs suggested. It is the same attitude of the Republican administration in Washington, and is one of the main reasons our country is in such bad straits.

In a recent interview with Martha Raddatz of ABC News, Dick Cheney made a telling reply to Martha's statement that two-thirds of Americans thought the war in Iraq was not worth fighting. Cheney's answer was: "So?" Martha replied: "You don't care what the American people think?" Cheney's answer was: "No."

To anyone who can't see what this means to our rights and freedoms, to our ability to be heard and heeded by our government "by the people, for the people," I say: Wake up! Do not allow this march toward dictatorship to continue.

Candidates like Don Barber will work for all of us, taking our cares and concerns to Albany, where gridlock prevails under a Republican majority. Let us change this by voting for Don Barber for state Senate. Don is one of us. He listens and cares what we think.

No one is entitled to a public office unless that person represents the people.  Seward believes he is entitled, and tactics are being used to prevent anyone running against him.  He is not use to being held accountable for what he does or doesn't do in Albany.  He has been very comfortable in his 22-year reign.  Let's all work hard to put a "man for the people" in office.  DON BARBER FOR SENATE

Love to see Barber stuff on TAP. I just wanted to say that Don Barber's new website will be up as soon as I can get it finished, most likely today. Hopefully everyone will go check it out!

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
Had heard rumors that the new website would be up any minute now.  If you can nudge MR to post some of the pics she took on the bus trip, I will put some up here for folks to get the feel of a real-deal, out-in-the-district campaign in SD 51!

Im all for change. We really need a progressive direction away from the Seward mentality. Im willing to support anyone who wants to do the right thing. Before, I can really put the full weight of my support behind Mr Barber, he is going to have to show me a good understanding of the economic background of my area, and provide some really thorough insight to his ideas on how he is going to proceed toward change.

Fundamentally, I disagree with all corporate welfare. Im not a fan of farmers, and small business relying on government handouts funded by the taxpayer. Although, the farmers were pigeon holed into this during the Roosevelt era, so I can forgive them. Don Barber relies on these subsidies to run his business. He should be aware of why this method is flawed, and lead by example and fix the reasons why he is reliant on taxpayer money to run his business.

There has been an EDZ in this area for a good while, and it really hasnt done much for the area. But, we got a Wal-Mart and a Lowes, and high taxes. Long family run business have left downtown Norwich. We also have Town of Norwich, Town of North Norwich and the City of Norwich Governments - 3 governments for 12k people. All this funded by about 15% of the local populace tax dollars.

How educated on these issues is Don Barber?

How educated on these issues is Don Barber? Very. (0.00 / 0)
I am with you on questioning politicians because we have heard so much rhetoric from them the most being  "I am working hard to lower taxes!"  The thing that impressed me with Don Barber from the very first time I heard him speak is that he tells what he has done in Caroline and backs it up with proof. He doesn't sound like a politician.  Having run his own business and also an organic farm Don knows what hard work is all about and that being fiscally responsible is necessary in operating a privately owned business, running a farm, and running a town government. Don has said so many times "balanced budgets; don't spend money you don't have".  I truly believe Don will bring these ideals to Albany and WORK VERY HARD WITH BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS to curb the spending. Look what is happening right now with the state budget!!!  Seward has put several press releases in the newspapers bragging about putting programs back in the budget negating the cuts recommended by Paterson.  At the same time he campaigns that he will cut taxes.  It doesn't take a genius to know one cannot cut taxes if one does not cut spending! Seward is about rhetoric: Barber is about action. Please read the following article:http://www.nypost.com/seven/03272008/postopinion/editorials/albanys_joy__taxpayers_woe_103781.htm
In this article is a good quote:
Much more important than achieving a timely budget is writing a sound one - and that's impossible right now, given the economic uncertainty.

Putting off adoption until after April 15 - with its influx of actual tax collections, as opposed to estimates - will give Albany a more realistic fiscal picture.

As it is, the budget is predicated on revenue estimates calculated before Wall Street's woes truly took hold.

That lets Albany commit to spending money it doesn't have - until, that is, a special session of the Legislature is called after Election Day to raise taxes.

Hopefully you will have the opportunity to meet Don Barber and talk with him about your concerns.
