It should surprise no one that Silver wants to remain the top Democrat in the Legislature. However, DiNapoli's behavior is really very sad to witness. Many of us out here volunteering thought much higher of his character, than has proven to be the case in recent weeks.

This kind of crap happens all over though. The local Democrats throw races to protect their status quo.

First off, does anyone have any substantial proof that DiNapoli is deliberately holding back?

If the allegation stands, this underscores that the real battle here, above and beyond D vs. R, is between progressive reform and the status quo. The status quo comes about when incumbents gerrymander their seats and finance their campaigns with special interest money, among other things.

Spitzer clearly represents a challenge to the status quo, both D and R. By extension, Johnson will too, and it looks like he'll owe even less to Silver/DiNapoli, the old-school D's. Thinking in terms of progressive reform, it becomes apparent that safe Dems might need a primary challenge or two to stir things up.
