Bloomberg Hearts Bruno 250,000 Times

Wow. Mayor Bloomberg really must want to protect state Senate Majority Leader and noted liar Joe Bruno. The Mayor is making his presence felt in a MAJOR way in the SSD-07 special election by dropping a $250,000 "bomb" on Maureen O'Connell's struggling campaign. The New York Post has the "exclusive".

BLOOMBERG BARRELS INTO SENATE RACE

MAYOR Bloomberg is about to drop a $250,000 bomb on a fiercely contested special election on Long Island that could shape the power structure of the state Senate.

...

Bloomberg "has committed to giving that amount [$250,000]," said one source. "Some of it he's given, some of it he'll be giving through multiple accounts."

The mayor's eye-popping contribution is certain to cheer up Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno.

But it could also infuriate Gov. Spitzer. The governor inserted himself into the hot race by campaigning for the Democratic candidate, Johnson, despite a demand by Bruno that he butt out.

Bloomberg is sending manpower as well as money. Two employees of his Community Assistance Unit have taken time off to volunteer for O'Connell.

The mayor has maintained a good relationship with Bruno, even after a flare-up when Bruno failed to support the West Side stadium plan in 2005. Last fall, the mayor donated $500,000 to the Senate Republicans just before the election.

Something tells me that my pal Joe Bruno won't be whining about the Mayor's involvement and demanding that he "butt out".

It's "Circle the wagons" time (0.00 / 0)
One thing the republicans have is cash...short on ideas and compassion and common sense, but they've got tons of cash.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Yes, but... (0.00 / 0)
The Democrats in New York have tons of cash, too.  I wouldn't be surprised if some wealthy Dem donor drops a "bomb" of similar or equal value on behalf of Spitzer's candidate.

Which makes me wonder just how effective the "netroots" strategy can be in this state.

guess we're about to find out. (0.00 / 0)
this is very much an experiment and i'd be lying to you if i said we weren't pretty much making this up as went along.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

NY-Ed PAC (0.00 / 0)
is already putting $250,000 into the race.

I think the play for the netroots is turning out volunteers.  The WFP is putting together the election day plan for this race and we're going to need a ton of bodies on the ground, so the chance is there.  More on this early next week.

I still think the blograiser is exciting though and I'm curious to see how much it brings in.

Netroots (4.00 / 2)
To assume that the emergent NY netroots will be ineffective in the face of big money is to misunderstand the role and history of the netroots thus far.

In many cases, the netroots have been characterized by insurgency (primary challenges, targeting "safe" R seats, etc.). Our candidates are rarely the anointed few, and are therefore unable to tap into vast institutional resources.

What they do have going for them is an army of committed progressives. Sure, they need money, and the small contributions they attract will never match corporate money. But candidates backed by the netroots have at their disposal a nexus of information and messaging that can out-maneuver much better funded opponents.

Media darlings Sens. Tester and Webb were victorious in their primary and general elections, despite being out-funded both rounds. Neither of them had the backing of the Democratic Party in the primary. What carried them were aggressive campaigns fueled by the combined strength of the grassroots and netroots.

I'm not saying we can work miracles overnight, but in its brief history, the netroots movement has accomplished great things. The local blogospheres are only starting to emerge, especially here in New York. I must say, this stuff is a lot of fun :)

...and we are on the move.

Much more to come in the weeks and months to come. Stay tuned and get involved right here.

We've got some work ahead of us.
