Another Democrat Emerges in the 3rd SD

by: politics64

Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 20:00:03 PM EDT

From Newsday Spin-cycle, news that NY State Democratic leaders and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian Foley are considering entering the race against 82 year old backbencher Cesar Trunzo.  Also some troublesome news on Dave Mejias candidacy against Kemp Hannon.

Local and State Party leaders have been troubled by a third Jimmy Dahroug run for this seat.  State WFP leaders seem to want a more viable choice and would Brian Foley ever be that!

The partisan war for control of the state Senate is prompting maneuvers on several battlefields. Here is the latest news from two of them.
politics64 :: Another Democrat Emerges in the 3rd SD
Local sources tell Rick Brand that Brookhaven Supervisor Brian Foley would be the state Democrats' top choice to challenge veteran Sen. Cesar Trunzo. He has $200,000 in campaign cash on hand, but before you bet on his jumping in, be warned that Foley is considered quite cautious. There's family history too: His father, John Foley, lost a bid to unseat Trunzo back in 1982, by 7,666 votes. Still, Senate Democrats were said to be testing Foley's name in polls. And Foley has had a conversation about it with Bob Master, the Communication Workers of America regional legislative director who also is state co-chair of the Working Families Party, which partners with Democrats in Senate races, Brand reports.

Speaking of the WFP, the party plans starting tomorrow to target Trunzo and Sen. Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City) in an "issues" campaign, slamming the Senate GOP on paid family-leave. Which Democrat will face Hannon, though, also remains hazy. As Celeste Hadrick reported Friday on this blog, Legis. David Mejias (D-Farmingdale) agreed to rejoin the Democratic legislative caucus after talking privately with Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs, with whom he'd been feuding. But sources say the Democratic organization has not reinstated its support for a Mejias race against Hannon -- whose seat seems to have been a topic of perennial discussion from the opposing party for time immemorial.

Dan Janison

Unlike Islip Town Councilman Chris Bodkin, who the progressive blogosphere has rejected for his recent party switch, Brian Foley is the scion of a local Democratic Party version of the Kennedy Klan! Foley's father, John was a long-term County Legislator and former Brookhaven Town Councilman.  Brian succeeded his dad in the legislature and went on to win two terms as Brookhaven Town Supervisor, the most populous Town in Suffolk County.  I posted a long time back of the deep Democratic bench in this SD and Brian was among the top of that bench.  Stay Tuned Folks, this nomination is still wide open!

First off, calling us out was unnecessary. I understand that this is your district, but if this seat is going to be one that the NYS Dems want to focus on, then they should pick a Democrat. Going with a guy that's been a Democrat for a few months doesn't sit well with me. The perception exists that he did this just to run against Trunzo. That was my problem with him.

That said, I do like what Brian Foley brings to the table.

A lifelong resident of Brookhaven Town, Brian and his five brothers and sisters learned at a young age to value teamwork and community service.  Brian has been working hard for the people of Brookhaven every day for the past 12 years in the Suffolk County Legislature.  First elected to represent the Seventh Legislative District (Blue Point) in 1993, Legislator Foley has a record of getting results.

Higher Education Leader: Brian has sponsored innovative legislation to provide increased access to higher education by offering tuition incentives to alleviate the nursing and engineering shortage as well as opposing tuition increases.

Building Better Roads:  As Chair of the Legislature's Public Works Committee from 1999-2001, Brian's leadership resulted in a record number of projects, improved infrastructure, and job growth.

Downtown Revitalization & Green Space: As Vice-Chair of the Economic Development & Education Committee, Brian delivered funding for historically important downtown communities. The winner of Amagansett Springs Aquifer Protection Group's 2002 Environmental Leadership Award, Brian successfully sponsored the very first resolution to appropriate monies from the Greenways Fund, preserving important wetlands and stream corridors.

Promoting Healthy Families: Brian led the fight that strengthened worker protections from second-hand smoke, receiving the 2002 Great American Smokeout Leadership Award from the American Cancer Society.  As Chair of the County Legislature's Health, Education & Youth Committee, Brian continued his well established reputation for supporting our County network of Health Centers.  He sponsored a law to establish a hospital reporting policy for indigent care.

Tirelessly active in our community, Brian Foley's service includes the Brookhaven Roe YMCA Board of Directors, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Advisory Board, Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, Past President Suffolk County Community Mediation Center, Past Chairperson Sunrise District Boy Scouts of America, and Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence.  In 2004, the Bayport Blue Point Chamber of Commerce presented Brian with their Dedicated Public Service Award.  He has been recognized as Person of the year by the Medford Youth Athletic Association Award in 2000 and the Farmingville Historical Society in 1999.

That is an impressive resume. This is a guy we could support. AND... he has a record as a Democrat, which is important.

First off, calling us out was unnecessary. (0.00 / 0)
Please elaborate.  Your definition of "calling us out" is beyond the pale of any other blogs definition.  Calling out refers to using a POST to attack a fellow blogger. An example would be a title of a post that says "Hey Phillip Anderson, Look how wrong you are! and than the post goes on elaborating on that.  You have called by RESPONSE COMMENTS, calling out!  The comments section is not defined as a call out anywhere and more to the point, I WAS DEFENDING MYSELF AGAINST A POSTER WHO CALLED ME A SCHMUCK! That is the person who called out.  I will not be posting here on TAP much longer as I will not be one of the few regulars who have to depend on the generosity of the manager to promote my posts while so many others who post far less have keys.  But for my edification, please do elaborate on your call out comment and who WE are?

Gee... (0.00 / 0)
You called us out by mentioning the progressive blogosphere "rejecting" Bodkin. My reasons for "rejecting" Bodkin are not any different than my reasons for "rejecting" Jack Davis or even people like Dave Dunning or Wes Kennison. Kennison switches parties (from Democrat to Republican) and then says he's going to run for Congress. How can you trust someone like that? I'm sure the Republicans are laughing at him. Bodkin is not any different.

I told you before. If he was a Democrat for a longer period of time and proved himself as such, I believe many people would have a different opinion of him.

I will not be posting here on TAP much longer as I will not be one of the few regulars who have to depend on the generosity of the manager to promote my posts while so many others who post far less have keys.

I haven't seen you post in awhile. You haven't posted in over a month. In fact, in 2008, you have posted exactly a dozen times.

You know what Mark? I have posted that (regularly) in a day. If this is the argument you want to make, fine. But don't make it to me. You are speaking to the wrong person.

You did not answer my first email at all while you were at conference. (0.00 / 0)
You did not answer the second until now and than you call it yelling! Very strange indeed? I think my Dahroug position has just demonstrated that the TAP site can be as non welcoming on progressive diversity of opinion as any other.  BTW congratulations on AD64 and blue to bluer, excellent work.

[ Parent ]
You can have diversity of opinion... (0.00 / 0)
It appears to me that you did not support Bodkin, but rather, you were against Dahroug. We are entitled to our own opinions of course, but you shouldn't let your disdain for a certain candidate make you jump at the first person who chooses to run a primary agaisnt him. That is what (in my view anyway) you did. Because as soon as Bodkin was out of the picture, you weren't around. And then when you chose to return, you posted about this new guy who might be entering the race.

Like I told you before, Foley can be a viable option. I want to hear where he stands on state issues and how progressive he is. The thing he has going for him is that he is a proven Democrat. Bodkin was not.

[ Parent ]
Correct, I posted at length on the deep Democratic bench (0.00 / 0)
Bodkin was part of that article and so is Foley.  I am afraid to say that diversity of opinion was sorely lacking here on this issue and I was treated most shabbily by all the pro Dahroug faction bordering on thuggish behavior.

without getting too technical, those who have access to the front page are largely a legacy of a previous version of soapblox. i can update, edit or delete that list, but i haven't in quite sometime. the way to get access to the front page probably doesn't involve yelling at me via email on a sunday.

just sayin'.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

the reply above was meant for Philip (0.00 / 0)
sorry about that Robert. Thanks for explaining the keys from soapbox days Philip. I could have used that info ahile ago when I initially asked the question.

By the way... (0.00 / 0)
I do like Brian Foley. Just thought you should know that.

I like him for a few reasons:

(1) Proven record as an elected official.

(2) Proven Democrat.

(3) Impressive resume that includes many community efforts.

He would be great in Albany. I just hope that he is willing to be grassroots and that he will reach out to the blogosphere.
