Saland serves a $5 Million ace. Tennis anyone?

by: Manny Love

Wed Nov 29, 2006 at 20:49:04 PM EST

(promoted from diaries - promoted by NYBri)

tenniscourtOn September 26, 2006, Steve Saland announced a $5 million technology grant to Marist College, at a time when local homeowners were facing an unprecedented escalation of their school taxes of crisis proportions. While Saland was  giving $5 Million to Marist College, a private, tax exempt institution of higher education with tuition paying students and an endowment, he provided just $712,676 for the same purpose to local public schools...which was to be divided among 9 local Dutchess County districts.

Coincidentally, the very next day the college announced completion of its brand new sports/tennis complex and beginning of rehabilitation to its football field for a cost of...get this...$5 million.

Manny Love :: Saland serves a $5 Million ace. Tennis anyone?
This tax giveaway is an example how the system in Albany is broken. First is the timing of the announcement, just prior to the election. Next, while the grant is not illegal, the fact that many of the College's Trustees are Saland contributors raises the appearance of an impropriety, even if none exist. These contributors are:

Chairman, Mr. Robert R. Dyson, Chairman and CEO, The Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation

Mr. Daniel G. Hickey '66, President, Hickey-Finn & Company

Dr. Dennis J. Murray, President, Marist College

Mr. Christopher G. McCann '83, President, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM

Mr. Alexander S. Reese, Managing Director Hudson Heritage, LLC

Mr. H. Todd Brinckerhoff, President, Brinckerhoff & Neuville, Inc.

Mr. Tim Tenney, President, Pepsi Cola of the Hudson Valley

Mr. Michael C. Duffy, Consultant

Mr. Michael G. Gartland, Attorney, Corbally, Gartland and Rappleyea, LLp.

While Marist College is a worthy and important member of the community, Saland's $5 million tax dollar giveaway should have been used for public schools, to reduce school tax burdens, and to improve the quality of education for our children; to provide assistance to the localities that provide Marist College non- reimbursed public services; or address the $5 million other necessary and import public needs in the 41st District.

Please let Spitzer just distroy the system here, and let's try and primary any Democrat that encourages the system. Really every time I start looking around our state government the shit that gets dug up is spectacular.

Doctorate (4.00 / 1)
Saland also has a doctorate courtesy of Marist.

He's an adjunct at Marist and gave them $140,000 in 2004 to "Build Scenic Overlook Pavilion and provide directional signage for Longview Park project"

Fun stuff.

this kind of garbage (4.00 / 1)
shows that, unfortunately, there IS a place for negative campaign ads (since the press probably won't connect any dots,  fawning over the grant while ignoring the reality to public institutions)

regards,

Is there a grant for garbage too? (4.00 / 2)

pork for private colleges (4.00 / 1)
i saw evidence of this in the sweeney/gillibrand race.  We found that Siena was giving money to Sweeney and our tax dollars were funding Siena.  And Siena's "independent" polls also had Sweeney with a big lead until the wife beating thing came out.  I also recently read (if im correctly recalling) that Joe Bruno got a half million for a new geology building for Sage College.  You know what?  I'm not sure the well being of Sage geology department is the most pressing issue for Old Man Bruno's constituents in Troy.

How many of our tax dollars are going to private educational institutions?

Good question.... (0.00 / 0)
....especially when the NY State Constitution bars public money for private interests....

We've got some work ahead of us.
