Holy Effin' Krap! Check Out O'Connell's Flyer!

by: phillip anderson

Fri Feb 02, 2007 at 13:47:01 PM EST

Whoa! Somebody is looking awfully desperate here and her name is Maureen. This is the mailer that her campaign is sending out, perhaps targeting Jewish households. Osama Bin Laden? The president of Iran? In a state Senate race? Are you effin' kidding me? Capitol Confidential has more.

Terror in the 7th

Here's Republican 7th SD candidate Maureen O'Connell's latest campaign mailer, which seeks not only to scare voters into supporting her, but also to link her with the man who held the seat she's seeking: Michael Balboni, former chair of the Senate's homeland security committee and now Gov. Eliot Spitzer's deputy secretary for public safety.

The piece even includes a photo of O'Connell and Balboni together.

I'm not sure what "security expertise" they're talking about here. Last I checked, O'Connell was a registered nurse - a fact about which SEIU/1199, her biggest union backer, has been making much in the mailers and radio/TV ads it has produced on O'Connell's behalf.

The way this is written, with an emphasis on Israel and O'Connell's support of the Jewish community it seems likely it was sent to Jewish households.

If that's the case, however, it must have been sent out before her endorsement earlier this week by The Jewish Press, since that's not mentioned here.

This is the second time in less than a year that Osama bin Laden has played a role in a New York political campaign.

Last summer, former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer tried to paint his opponent, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, as weak on terror with an ad that juxtaposed an image of her with a photo of bin Laden.

They are scared. This just reeks of desperation.

Much more absolute freaking nuttiness on the flip...

Hmm... scare em into votin for me! (4.00 / 1)
yeah, that might get you a few votes, but it'll probably piss more people off than anything.

WOW. (4.00 / 2)
You know. I ran for the State Senate for over 10 months and appeared in front of countless groups, answered countless questions, talked one-on-one with thousands of people and not ONCE did someone ask me about the threat of terrorism.

Not ONCE.

Property taxes, education, the environment, health care, election reform...yes. But the voters were smart enough to know that terrorism, although a concern, isn't really a state issue of the first degree. Most of that policy is handed down from the feds...as is much of the money.

Every time I think the Republican Party in New York can't get any more pandering to people's fear and distrust, they surprise me.

We've got some work ahead of us.

This Is So Obviously Targeted at the Jewish Community (4.00 / 1)
And even more specifically, that segment which ranks Israel's security equal in importance to that of New York State.  This isn't to say that those concerns should be tossed aside (far from it), but "[a]dvocating for Israel's right to defend herself from terrorists" doesn't exactly seem like one of the top priorities for the State Senate, nor even within its purview.

As Brian said, this flyer brings pandering to a whole new level ("This one goes to eleven!").

More importantly, I'm going to make sure that everyone I know in the 7th District sees this.  I'm sure they'll all be as repulsed as I was, and hopefully it will spread around the district like some incredibly obnoxious wildfire and causesome additional folks to turn out to vote for Johnson, if only to prevent O'Connell from winning.  I'm sure the Johnson campaign would be happy enough with those "Stop O'Connell" votes, even if they're not really for him, per se.

Osama wouldn't do it for me (4.00 / 2)
but golly, that Homeland security logo has me convinced....wish I was still living on Long Island so Mo could keep me SAFE! :)

What a long, strange trip it's been.

tel aviv (4.00 / 1)
i've never been to tel aviv...is that near utica?  Because i'm pretty sure its not in the 7th.

It's certainly not great neck (0.00 / 0)
I mean in Great Neck there *is* a large jewish population... but it is not *the* issue.
And I know someone will probably flame me for the generalization, but I am from Great Neck...
The Northern areas have a more conservative membership, some from Iran originally, the South portion has a 'newer' jewish audience along with a Asian (specifically Korean) background.

There is no 'single' issue to push buttons about, and people don't vote just because a paper says so or because of any one religious leader.

It's really sad that this button was pushed.

No shit. (0.00 / 0)
They are trying to scare the Persian Jewish Community in Great Neck into voting for Maureen.  So, what better way than to put Ahmadinejad's mug on the mailer?  They know they are getting their asses kicked up there, hence the desperation.

Dude... (4.00 / 3)
...words fail me.

The presumptuousness of it all; "we need Maureen O'Wingnut to protect us". With what? Is the silly woman going to throw her campaign lit at Osama? Take him to a titty bar with Joe Bruno and knock him out while he's distracted?

Just based on that, I'm putting in an extra day in Nassau.

Yeah, is it legit.. (4.00 / 1)
to use the official NYS Homeland Security logo like that? can someone look into that?

Second, is anyone else getting a Karl Rove tingle here..
Newt Gingrich once told Bill Clinton "if we fought you fair, you'd win every time."

This reeks of desperation, and "hide the audit" O'Connell is probably doing this because her consultants realized a diversion was necessary; she's hardcore anti-extremist and she was evidently incompetent as clerk, but we don't really know the details on that one, cough.

Clearly she's playing up the Balboni connection, but honestly what did she do in the leg. to prove this "experience"? Ultimately, seems like a failure on arrival, since the majority of the American people no longer trust Repubs to win the war on terrorism.. thanks to Bushy, of course.

Peter King writes me Nasty Letters.

I looked at the real seal (0.00 / 0)
while this one is very similar, it is missing the NYS deal below the American flag state.

Perhaps her handlers thought it was legal to use because it is not the real logo.

Like when people in the movies dress people up in military uniforms, they have to do something "wrong" (isignias or honors in the wrong locations, etc.) so they are not really in uniorm and therefore "impersonating."

What a long, strange trip it's been.

absurd, terribly funny, BUT (as always) I do have a comment! (0.00 / 0)
First off. This is absolutely "funny." And by funny I mean outright stupid. No assembly person from Lake Placid to somewhere in Nassau County will protect us in this capacity. But, while this is a b.s. attempt on her part to link herself to the fight on terror, we, as a party, have been using this similar tactic for a while now in both the general election and this election. As posted on Newsday:

  - - - Johnson said he voted for a property tax increase to bail out Nassau from a fiscal crisis inherited from Republicans. He tried to tie O'Connell to President George W. Bush and former County Executive Thomas Gulotta.

  - - - "It's typical," he said. "Republicans like George Bush and Tom Gulotta create the mess and then they blame the Democrats for doing things we needed to do to fix their problems."

If Johnson can misrepresent all republicans as one exact mold (they are not as posted here before...just as dems are not - see Heath Shuler of North Carolina, Joe Donnelly and Brad Ellsworth, both of Indiana, Charlie Wilson of Ohio, and Bob Casey, Chris Carney and Jason Altmire, each of Pennsylvania - and I believe all "pro-life") and imply that a local republican has any impact on what the Feds and Bush are doing, then why can't O'Connell do the same? We can argue the Gulotta issue, but give me a break on comparing her to Bush!

In fact, it is my recollection that a Democrat who was running this past election for assembly ran ads making it appear as if her republican challenger was George Bush (was it in Westchester ???). There was even a posting on Daily Kos by Tom Ball that referred to NYBri's opponent as follows:

"mini-Bush incumbent Republican"

Point here - O'Connell is desperate and this is pure stupidity, but it seems that she is doing the same thing the democrat candidates have done in a similar (yet different too) capacity (note - I believe all lost who tried this tactic). Mislead and misrepresent to confuse from the truth.

I love being the Devil's Advocate and the thorn in the side! I do this because we all know (or hope) that the "right" side will prevail!

Oh, there's more (4.00 / 2)
Daily Gotham has an exclusive with more O'Connell lit. She's quite talented, that one.

oh my god (0.00 / 0)
can I steal this?

please?

Oh.... (0.00 / 0)
That is just too good. Thank you, MB.

We've got some work ahead of us.

A perfect example of one of the failed Rovian approaches. (0.00 / 0)
In choosing a single issue and counting on scaring the hell out of people in order to get votes, they've painted themselves into a corner.  Maureen has made herself another lemming.
