Grover Cleveland (4.00 / 3)

The historian in me has to add some things.  The story about Cleveland is fascinating, but King has it wrong.  Cleveland was accused of fathering a child out-of-wedlock during his first campaign (he was unmarried at the time).  The GOP charge was most effective in cartoon form: a little boy, crying, says to his mother who is out of frame, "Ma, Ma, where is Pa?"  When Cleveland won despite this, Democrats responded to the "Ma, Ma, where is Pa?" question with the retort, "Off to the White House.  Ha, ha, ha!"

Cleveland got married while president, and the Clevelands soon had a daughter, Ruth.  She is the "Baby Ruth" for whom the candy bar was named.  Babe Ruth was named after the candy bar, not the other way around.  So old Grover's marital history still resonates in our culture.  But it now seems to be the case that Cleveland did not father the child the Republicans named.  Apparently, his law partner in Buffalo did and had died in the interim.  Out of loyalty to his partner, Cleveland never defended himself against those Republican charges.
