Bruno Might not Run for Re-election

by: Roatti

Tue May 27, 2008 at 20:30:04 PM EDT

CapCon is reporting that Bruno is dodging questions on whether he is going to run for his Senate seat again this year:

When asked whether he would run for re-election this fall, Bruno responded:

"I am where I am today. Here I am with you, having this delightful conversation and we'll see what life looks like."

When asked if he still enjoyed working in the legislature, Bruno said:

"It's more fun than it was six months ago. I have better feelings about it," he said. "But, I'll tell you, being in government these days, it's a pretty heavy burden, and it takes a toll too."

This is a very interesting statement at this time.  After Bruno outlasted his arch-nemesis Spitzer in state government, one would think he would want to stay for a while.

This is complete congecture on my part, but I can only think of 2 motives for Joe not to seek his seat again.  One is that he knows the Democrats are going to take the senate and he wants to avoid the ugly leadership fight that will cannibalize the new GOP senate minority caucus in January.  The other is that he is depressed after losing his wife recently and wants to retire.

I hope it's the former, but either way, a Bruno retirement adds another district to our ever-expanding map of possible takeovers.

UPDATE: Robina points out in the comments that maybe Bruno also might see himself soon landing in jail as per that federal investigation (how could I forget that???)

alternative hypotheses: (4.00 / 2)
1-- he is just another self-serving Republican Senator, not interested in bothering to run if his party is not in the majority and so he can't cash in on influence-peddling on the side.

2-- the investigation into his dealings on the side (as per above) is closing in on him, and he will be in court or jail, and in no position to serve.

How could I forget about #2!!! (0.00 / 0)

interesting (4.00 / 1)

Is there a summary list somewhere of all the state Senate seats that are targetted or in play, and what their D/R split in national elections is?  There must be a decent number of R-held ones whose districts do vote D for national office.

That being said, we'll all miss Joe  ;-)

I think Robert wrote a diary about his potential challengers that covered this (4.00 / 1)

I didn't write it... (4.00 / 2)
But check out Irene's account from Friday on the Senate races.

Politics64 wrote one some time ago, but it's a bit outdated. Some of the races he mentioned are still relevant (like his own SD-3) but there are others that should be mentioned as targets.

The new post/thread is excellent.

Dems should be taking this seat (4.00 / 1)
And are poised to do it.  If some of them drew down their ambitions a little bit.

I'm referring, of course, to huge amount of candidates running in the Democratic Primary for Congress in NY-21.  I can't get past thinking that at least one, perhaps two, of the folks running for Congress, particularly those making their first run for office would be better off seeking Bruno's seat.

The two that come to mind are Craig Burridge and Darius Shahinfar.  Darius has been running a good campaign and is a former aide to Rep. Gillibrand, whose Congressional District overlaps Bruno's.  Burridge himself is the only one of the eight Dems running in NY-21 who lives in Bruno's district.  I interviewed him today and the story is coming soon...he's extremely qualified for public office, but may be in over his head running for Congress.  The Senate race, however, is where he could give even Joe a good run for his money.

There is already someone gearing up to challenge Bruno (4.00 / 2)
His name is Brian Premo.  He attempted to make a run in 2006 but he wasn't able to get onto the ballot due to legal complications because he switched registration from republican to democrat too late.  This time around, as last time, he has the support of Rensselaer Democrats.  For more information about Premo and his prior run see this article from the New York Sun or this article from the Post-Star (both articles are from March).

Joanne Yepsen is another name that has been thrown around as a possible challenger to Bruno.

Yepsen's not running (4.00 / 2)
The Saratoga County Dems are meeting tonight to discuss Premo, among other things.  Last time around, no endorsement was made, in large part because of his recent switch to Dem.  Since there's nobody else running, and Bruno looks as weak as ever, we'll see how things go tonight.

I am told (0.00 / 0)
That Bruno's name was giving to committee person last night as the candidate in the 43rd Senate District.  I believe the attuide in Rens/Saratoga County is that we are far better off with him then with out him.  I believe in many other Districts SD 3-11-15-56 they may be thinking the same thing.
