Welcome David Sirota To The Albany Project

by: robert.harding

Wed May 28, 2008 at 09:50:47 AM EDT

(Note: David will be live blogging from 10:30 to 11:05 a.m. today. Our discussion will take place in the comments section.)

On May 1, Phillip and I were contacted by David Sirota who was hoping that on The Albany Project we would promote his new book, The Uprising: An Unauthorized Tour of the Populist Revolt Scaring Wall Street and Washington. When talking about the book, David mentioned that there was a chapter in The Uprising (Chapter four, for those of you who are in possession of the book).

As promised, I will join with members of The Albany Project community in welcoming David Sirota to TAP. David can be best summed up as a writer. This is his second book after debuting with Hostile Takeover in 2006. He also writes a weekly column that reaches 1.6 million readers in the western United States. He has his own blog and recently authored a piece for the New York Times Magazine.

The reason David is here though is to promote The Uprising. The book received advanced praise from Matt Taibbi and Naomi Klein, as well as Joe Trippi. It centers around the populist movements on the left and right, from the Working Families Party and the successes of the WFP in New York to the Minuteman Project operating in the southwestern United States. David's introduction is comedic, yet intelligent. It tells the story of the moment where he discovered that these movements, while on different sides of the spectrum, are interwoven along the lines of said populist revolt. The place was the first YearlyKos convention and he was in a drunken state. I will leave it at that.

I have made it through a good portion of the book and it will not disappoint. As a lover of books and an owner of Hostile Takeover, this is by far the better of the two. Sirota brings the progressive populist movement and the conservative populist movement together to explain the whole populist movement, its meaning and its many parts.

As a final reminder, David will be in New York City for several events. Here is the full rundown from my earlier posts on David's appearances.

Sirota's tour will see him visit New York City for a few different events. From 7 to 9 p.m. Friday (May 30) at The Riverside Church (490 Riverside Drive), David will be one of the panelists in a discussion entitled, The Underground Uprising: Alternate Routes to Social Justice in the 21st Century. Joining David will be Bertha Lewis from New York ACORN and Leslie Lowe of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility.

After making a couple of stops in Pennsylvania, David will return to New York City on June 2 for a couple of events. First, at 6:30 p.m. David and Air America's Sam Seder will be at an event with Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century. That event will take place at Red Sky, located at 47 E. 29th Street.

Later in the day, Sirota will be a guest on Lizz Winstead's Shoot the Messenger from 9 to 10 p.m. The studio is at 45 Bleecker Street and if you want to attend the live show, you can get your tickets here.

Finally, David will wrap up his swing through New York City with another panel discussion from 7 to 8 p.m. June 3 at The Strand Bookstore. David will be joined by New York State Senator Eric Schneiderman, Working Families Party Executive Director Dan Cantor, Joel Barkin of the Progressive States Network and Andrea Batista Schlesinger of the Drum Major Institute. The Working Families Party, Progressive States and DMI are all sponsoring the panel discussion.

Let's have a great discussion and please join me in welcoming David to our community.

welcome, david. (0.00 / 0)
thanks so much for stopping by to discuss The Uprising with us.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Welcome David... (0.00 / 0)
(David will be on any minute now.)

Let's have a good discussion.

Support our troops, not the war.

Thanks for having me (4.00 / 3)
Thanks a ton for having me - as you know the book has an entire chapter about New York politics, through the lens of the Working Families Party. Reporting that particular chapter was an incredible experience - the party gave me full access to behind-the-scenes meetings, that ended up providing such terrific color.

So I'm open to any questions anyone has about what I reported in that chapter, or on the rise of populism in general. Fire away!

OK! Welcome. (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for coming.

well... (0.00 / 0)
...if he is working on looking as good as his photo, we should have reassured him there would be no video...

David is here... (0.00 / 0)
Let's all welcome David to TAP and give The Uprising the attention and discussion it deserves.

Welcome to our humble abode, David!

Rating (4.00 / 1)
David,
What other grassroots groups do you know of that are ready to burst onto the scene?

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

Many (4.00 / 2)
The most promising, I think, are organizations like DFA, which are grassroots in nature, and have built technology (DFALink) that connects members to each other directly, rather than through a central headquarters. I also think unions are underuitilized - they are small-d democratic organizations that are inherently grassroots. Then there are organizations like Democrats Work and Blue Tiger Democrats, which I wrote about in a newspaper column recently - these are partisan institutions, but they are grassroots in scope and focus.

David... (0.00 / 0)
The Working Families Party obviously plays a key role in NY. Could you see the success of the WFP build a strong minor party in the future at the national level? Maybe not the WFP necessarily, but possibly another small party who decides to go national?

Support our troops, not the war.

Yes, but... (4.00 / 1)
Yes, I think it is possible. I think there could be, for instance, a patchwork of WFP-like parties all over the country. In fusion states, there could be WFPs, in non-fusion states there could be Progressive Parties like they have in Vermont. That said, the best way to make this happen is for more states to re-legalize fusion - fusion has been far and away the most effective way for third parties to weild real power.

[ Parent ]
david, (4.00 / 1)
can you tell us what it was about the WFP that interested you in the first place. what is it about our "little party that could" that fits into your "uprising" model?

the book is fantastic, btw. it was a great read over the holiday weekend. and to those who haven't read it yet, the book is well worth reading for a number of reasons, not leat the chapter about new york titled, "The Boss And His Fusion Machine".

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Third Parties (4.00 / 2)
Third parties have always had an allure in people's minds - they are sort of a romantic notion. So I decided to seek out the most powerful third party in America to use as a vehicle to talk about what third party politics can - and cannot - be in our nation under our current laws. The WFP was, far and away, the most effective and powerful third party.

[ Parent ]
Local question (4.00 / 1)
We had a mayor here in Ithaca who won 2 terms in office with on a Democratic ticket, with WFP support, too.  He was primarily a WFP guy.  Did you find many local-level leaders with a primary affiliation with WFP, or was he as unusual as we in Ithaca tend to think?

Yes, I did (4.00 / 2)
Yes, I did find this - in fact, I found that the WFP's work and affiliation in primaries is one of the party's most powerful tools. I believe I cite a poll in the book finding that to voters in NYC, for instance, the WFP endorsement in the primary is the most important endorsement of all.

[ Parent ]
Congressional Races (4.00 / 1)
We have a very hotly contested congressional race here in NY-26 (Tom Reynolds old seat), how much influence do you think that the WFP will have on a race like ours in NY-26?

Could have a lot (4.00 / 3)
What I know of upstate NY is that economic issues like trade, jobs and wages are big - and that's the WFP's bread and butter. Take a gander at the WFP's impressive results helping Dems like Tim Bishop and Brian Higgins get elected through working-class economic appeals.

[ Parent ]
yup. (4.00 / 1)

TODAY is day one. It always is.

[ Parent ]
given that we are new yorkers, (4.00 / 2)
we often think that the world revolves around us. sorry about that. anyway, could you give us a brief big picture of "the upsrising" your book describes? what exactly is the upsrising and why did you write this book?

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Right and Left (4.00 / 1)
The Uprising's thesis is that there is an historic amount of anger out there right now directed not only at government, but at many institutions - from big business, to banks, to the financial system. At the same time (or, more likely, because of) we face a Mideast crisis, an energy emergency, a climate crisis, a financial meltdown, etc. These data points tell us that we are at the precipice - at an uprising - a point that's somewhere between disengagaed chaos and a full-fledged organized social movement. The book seeks to explore what that uprising is all about on both the right and left, and what may come out of it.

[ Parent ]
Innovation? (0.00 / 0)
Didn't read the book yet... so, forgive me if it says, but, do you see uprising as simply demanding change from institutions, or as also applying innovation to institutions (from the people)?

[ Parent ]
Hard to know (0.00 / 0)
It's really hard to know how this uprising will - if it eventually does - express itself in real concrete terms. I think the goals will be both.

[ Parent ]
Shameless plug (4.00 / 3)
David,
If you're registered at DFA, how about a plug for Robert's scholarship application?

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

Thanks for coming David (4.00 / 1)
How much of your book do you devote to the blogosphere?

Whole chapter (4.00 / 1)
The final chapter is all about the Netroots and blogosphere.

[ Parent ]
Netroots (0.00 / 0)
David, one thing I liked about The Uprising is how it essentially started and finished with the netroots. How do you see the netroots playing a role in this populist movement at all levels in the future?

Support our troops, not the war.

Connective tissue (4.00 / 1)
I found it difficult to write about the Netroots and the blogosphere because, by definition, the Netroots and the blogosphere are not monoliths. And in that same light, I think the Netroots and blogosphere will not be independent wings of a populist movement - but the connective tissue pulling the uprising into the movement stage. The technology (blogs, social networking, databasing, etc.) is going to help connect disparate pieces of this uprising as never before - it is that connection that is one of the key ingredients that takes uprisings to movement status (think Richard Viguerie with his newsletters, for instance, helping bring the conservative uprising of the late 1970s to a full conservative movement in the 1980s).

[ Parent ]
I'm ordering your book right now (4.00 / 1)
It's been a pleasure chatting with you, thanks for answering my question!

My pleasure! (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for coming by!

[ Parent ]
you are going to really dig it. (0.00 / 0)
it's a great read and an important piece of work.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

[ Parent ]
I would just like you to know David... (0.00 / 0)
That during this live blog, at least two individuals have sent me messages saying they are ordering your book.

Support our troops, not the war.

Fantastic (4.00 / 1)
This book is - obviously - not a book for the Establishment, so it is going to rely on folks at places like TAP to get the word out. So I really appreciate it.

[ Parent ]
Darwinism (0.00 / 0)
David,
What are distinguishing characteristics that predict which organizations will be most successful in becoming a focal point for their issues?

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

Tough question (4.00 / 3)
That's a really tough question. One I can say for sure - at least as it relates to politics: Some modicum of democracy. It's not a coincidence that - over time - the most powerful, long-lasting and important progressive political institutions have been unions. These are institutions that are rooted in democracy in that their leadership is all elected and accountable to workers (granted, there have been efforts by labor power players to sometimes limit that democracy, but as an institution, they are founded in democracy).

So as progressives, if we are going to build a movement, we are going to need institutions that really subject themselves to true democratic control. That gives grassroots members a true sense of ownership. And let me just say - this is not my idea - this is Saul Alinsky's idea.

[ Parent ]
thanks so much for stopping by, david (4.00 / 2)
we really appreciate you taking the time to discuss this book with us.

once again, for those who have yet to read it, i really an't recommend it highly enough. both robert and myself will be posting reviews of it here soon.

also, for those of you in and around NYC, david will be doing a number of events in the next week or so to promote the book. i'll be at most of them and i'd love to see you there.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

David... (4.00 / 1)
I know that you have to run, but I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us. This chat was very insightful and the book is a great read. I look forward to meeting you in New York City next week.

- Robert

Gotta go - Air America! (4.00 / 5)
Ok folks - I have to run. I'm on Air America in 5 minutes. Thanks so much for having me - I really hope to see many of you at the book tour events! You can find the whole tour at www.davidsirota.com/uprising

Thanks David... (0.00 / 0)
Best of luck on the tour and we will see you in NYC!

Support our troops, not the war.

I hope to have David back... (0.00 / 0)
After his tour winds down to talk more about his chapter on the WFP. The WFP will be playing a key role in the elections this fall here in New York, whether it is endorsing congressional candidates or by supporting state senate candidates.

And please, pick up The Uprising today. It is a great book, it's available on Amazon for $17.13 and you will not be disappointed. David put a lot of research, dedication and intelligence into this account.

Support our troops, not the war.

On the List (0.00 / 0)
I added the book to my Amazon Wish List.  After I finish Jim Webb's book, I plan on adding David's book to my next order.
This was a good idea, Robert.  I'd love to see more people come to ATP like this.  Thanks.

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

I would love it too... (0.00 / 0)
I know that prior to my time here, we had a few of these book chats. They are a win-win for both sides. The author gets free publicity and hopefully (like today) people who will buy the book. Then we get the privilege of hosting the author and getting traffic, attention, etc.

The nice thing about David is that he came to us. He wanted to do this. It was just a matter of setting it up. That's what made this so easy. I'm not saying it wouldn't be easy with anyone else, but when you have someone willing to do it from the get-go, things go a lot smoother.

Support our troops, not the war.

[ Parent ]
Wow! Sorry I missed this... (0.00 / 0)
Add me to the list of people who will be picking up The Uprising.  I would have loved to be here for the liveblog, but you gotta interview for jobs sometime.  Great stuff all the way down the thread, guys.

You missed this... (0.00 / 0)
For a job interview?

Who needs work...

The book is great. It is worth the investment. Again, I'm hoping to have David back for a live blog.

Support our troops, not the war.
