SD-61: Erie County Conservative Party Recommends Mesi

SD-61 Democratic candidate Joe Mesi is on the verge of receiving the Conservative Party endorsement in the 61st Senate District race, according to a press release issued by the Mesi campaign.

Erie County Conservative Party Chairman, Ralph C. Lorigo said the party decided to recommend Mesi after meeting with him Thursday night. "He understands that the taxpayers in Erie County have been hit hard by this economy, and wants to help them get back on their feet by bringing fiscal restraint to the Capital," Lorgio said.

"I am grateful for Conservative Party's support," said Mesi. "This year, we face difficult economic times, and yet Albany voted to increase spending in our State Budget. Having run my own business, I know it's important not to spend more than you take in and I think the politicians in Albany have forgotten this rule. I will work hard to bring fiscal responsibility to our State Legislature."

I must preface my remarks here by saying that I really like Joe Mesi as a candidate. I was very impressed with him following my interview with him and he has been working hard in the district.

Only one Democratic senator (oddly enough, it's a Buffalo-area senator - Sen. William Stachowski) has received and won with the Conservative line.

The problem with the New York State Conservative Party are their "legislative priorities", which don't necessarily fit into the Democratic platform.

Just some tidbits from their priorities:

- We are opposed to taxpayer financing of political campaigns.

- We staunchly reject any effort to reinforce current abortion laws.  We support parental notification and/or consent prior to the performance of an abortion on an unmarried minor and we support New York passing a ban on the procedure known as Partial Birth Abortion, the elimination of Medicaid funding of abortions and support Informed Consent.

- The Conservative Party staunchly believes that all human cloning must be banned and that stem-cell research specifically prohibits the use of progenitor cells and/or pluripotent cells and is limited to adult stem cells and fetal cord blood research.

- We support a constitutional amendment that will define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.  We also believe that any attempt to amend the Human Rights Law to include "transgender" language as a special class of citizens should be rejected.

Again, I like Mesi. But I do not know why Democrats would want to associate themselves with that full platform. That is pretty troubling, to say the least.

There are 3,967 Conservative Party voters in the 61st Senate District. Mesi has also received the Working Families Party endorsement.

The Conservative Party typically (0.00 / 0)
will only endorse Pro-Life Candidates.

Is he saying he's Pro-Life?

I should Clarify... (0.00 / 0)
Mike Long, state chair, only endorses pro-life.

In 2004, Brian Higgins was recommended by Ralph Lorigo and Long said no, so dont read too much into this yet.

But being recommended... (0.00 / 0)
Should say enough. If the local party recommends him, that means (at least in my view) that he adheres to what they believe in. I know for a fact that he supports a strong civil union. Even that would go against their belief in regard to marriage equality.

I'm not saying he would abide by all the priorities set forth by the Conservative Party, but questions should be asked. I like your question. Is he saying he is anti-choice? Is he saying that he is against stem cell research (something that Gov. Paterson is a huge supporter of)?

It makes you wonder (0.00 / 0)
what he told them in his interview, and how different those answers might have been than what he told you.

At least Dan Ward will admit he's pro-life - hell, he's proud of it.

I don't think he panders... (0.00 / 0)
to one side and then panders to another. At least I hope he doesn't. I believe what he told me was honest. His position on marriage equality was a very honest one with me.

But I do wonder what he told them. I hope he didn't just tell them what they wanted to hear for the sake of getting the endorsement. Democrats have proven we can win without that line, which is merely an extension of the Republican Party's views on many issues.

larger discussion about taking conservative line (4.00 / 1)
Question: is it a county or state standard? Because where I live, lots of pro choice Dems take the conservative line. Their argument is that Repubs won't pull the Dem lever. I have heard one more than one pro-choice Dem elected say that conservative just means you're conservative on some issues as opposed to being liberal.

I think it's hollow and a huge rationalization, but some say it's the only way they can get elected in a district that leans right. And I don't see the difference between taking that line or the Repub line but many disagree with me.

Our local party also will pick pro-choice dems (0.00 / 0)
from time to time, but any office that crosses a state line goes to State Chair long, and then, foghettabatit.

Boutique candidate (0.00 / 0)
Joe Mesi was a contender for the heavyweight crown only because the field was awful.  He fought like hell to regain his license to fight after it was pretty much agreed it was in the best interests of his personal health and safety to bar him from the sport of prize fighting.  Anyone for "know when to quit"?
Regardless of his stance on every issue....he is incapable of stepping off the stage!!!!!!!  This guy has no more business in a legislative body than I do in piloting the space shuttle. This is a ridiculous abuse of the election process and a horrible waste of attention.

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

I have just two thoughts here. (0.00 / 0)
First, I would like to know what a candidate can say to the WFP screening committee to get their approval and then sat to the Conservative screeners to get their approval. I know Abortion Rights are not WFP front and center issue although they are a pro-choice party.  But Mesi did have to tell them of being fiercely pro-labor rights, minimum wage, progressive taxation, consumer advocacy etc. and the Cons detest all this stuff. I am willing to give Mesi the benefit of the doubt and say that somehow ingeniously he figured out a way to highlight all his views that the WFP wanted to know and then highlight all the views that the Cons wanted to know without stepping over one another's NO NO areas!  That is some kind of balletic move for a heavyweight!

Second point, regardless how he did it, if he had WFP and Cons lines and we know IP is committed to Bruno giving Ratzenberger R and IP then Iannello and the rest of the Dem Field should clear out and let Mesi be the next 61SD Senator.  With those lines its in the bag/  No wonder Bruno just redecorated the minorities conference room!

Why not? (0.00 / 0)
"I do not know why Democrats would want to associate themselves with that full platform. That is pretty troubling, to say the least."

Most Republicans who accept endorsements from the Conservatives pay little more than lip service to these "legislative priorities."  I'm sure most Conservatives realize this, and also that they probably won't find anyone in New York State to support who is not a single-digit fringe candidate and takes these things seriously, which is one thing I appreciate about New York State as opposed to certain other places I've lived, such as South Carolina.  So why should this keep Democrats from running on the Conservative line if it is offered?

Why? (0.00 / 0)
Unless you are a conservative Democrat (which Mesi isn't) you really can't align yourself with the Conservative Party. I think our time is better spent trying to woo the Independence Party that has endorsed plenty of Republicans over the years.

Politics64 raises an interesting question. Mesi was endorsed by the Working Families Party not too long ago. What Mesi said to appeal to both would be interesting to know. You are talking about two different ends of the spectrum.

I found Mesi to be fairly moderate with some liberal mixed in here and there. I don't see what makes him a Conservative Party endorsed candidate. I see plenty that would make him the IP choice and the WFP choice. His brother works (or worked) at American Axle and Mesi said that had a huge impact on his decision. So Mesi is pro-labor, pro-worker, etc.

I just don't buy the mix of Joe Mesi and the Conservative Party. I know he doesn't adhere to all those values and I can't imagine him pandering either.
