Thomas M. Reynolds to Suffering Constituents: "Let them eat cake!"

by: Mr. Ubio

Thu Jun 12, 2008 at 18:34:01 PM EDT

(He's leaving. What the hell does he care? - promoted by phillip anderson)

H.R.5749

On June 12, 2008 The House of Representatives approved (274-137) H.R.5749 which will extend unemployment benefits 13 weeks.

OpenCongress Summary:
This bill would provide for 13 more weeks on unemployment benefits to workers exhausting their regular unemployment compensation, In states with unemployment rates above 6 percent, it would provide an additional 13 weeks, for a total of 26. The extension would apply to anyone whose benefits are exhausted before January 2009, an estimated 3.5 million.

http://www.opencongress.org/bi...

It's obvious to say that, this much needed support could not have come at a better time. So we should thank our representatives that support their constituents, their families and thus our ability to properly function and thrive as a state. Except for one representative, whose response to his constituents' economic woes is "just eat cake": Thomas N. Reynolds.

Thomas N. Reynolds of the 26th District (Rochester) voted NAY.

More on the flip...

Mr. Ubio :: Thomas M. Reynolds to Suffering Constituents: "Let them eat cake!"
NAY!

UNBELIEVABLE!

Upstate New York is economically suffering. That is not debatable, but a fact.
http://www.brookings.edu/metro...

And if you need more proof, visit downtown Rochester. Rochester is a shell of its former self. It has the ability to become great again, but it will never be so long as one of it's leaders is Thomas N. Reynolds.

Political lines should NEVER matter when people are suffering. Their pain as a New Yorker is our pain as well. As New Yorkers' we should be disgusted at Mr.Reynolds' vote. When their unemployment benefits end, and they have no where to go or nothing to eat, I wonder what will Mr.Reynolds say?

So I propose we contact Mr.Reynolds and ask, "Why did you vote against H.R.5749?"
http://reynolds.house.gov/

I also propose we contact Mr.Higgins who did not vote and ask "Why?"
http://higgins.house.gov/
I wonder if he had voted, how would he have voted?

This is a list of how everyone voted:

Am I exaggerating? Being dramatic about the problems of unemployment and employee rights/benefits? Want to ask a homeless man's children, or a hungry family, if I'm exaggerating or being dramatic? I certainly do not, and will work hard to prevent anyone ever finding out the answer.

Thanks for reading and please ask Mr.Reynolds. I still have not received an answer.

I'm always reminded of his horrible voting record when I look to the left at themiddleclass.org scorecard while visiting this site. The big fat "F" is always there to remind me of his abysmal record.

I live in his district. My son is a laid off electrician on unemployment until who knows when.  Not enough construction jobs to keep all the electricians working because our district is depressed economically -- with little or no help from Mr. Reynolds.  Reynolds' doesn't care about the working people of this district and never has.  He votes consistently against the people of this district.

I have a folder full of letters that I have written to him over the years.  And the many phone calls that I've made to his offices are burned in my collective memory.  Good riddance to him and his abominable voting record.  I'll write one more letter for this one.

It will be refreshing to elect Jon Powers in November.  I won't have to write and call my congressional office every time a vote comes up.

Im sorry about your son (0.00 / 0)
This is happening to many hard working people in District-26. And it's been happening for way too long.

Although I have some comfort that Mr.Reynolds will not be there next year, my comfort is linked to much uneasiness at the thought that someone just as out-of-tune with what District-26 needs will take his place and thus this disasterous cycle of leadership will continue.

Would you like to hold an event for Jon Powers?

Thank you (4.00 / 1)
I hope he'll move down the list and get a call back soon.  Our region never really recovers completely after a downturn.  I can't imagine what this latest economic slowdown will mean.

I understand your uneasiness -- the thought of another Reynolds-esque representative sends me into a frenzy.  Gives me the incentive to get to work.   The bonus is -- Jon Powers is a great candidate and will make an excellent representative.  Makes it really easy to put out the effort.

I have held or helped with a couple of events for Jon Powers but would be open to hold another should the campaign request something.  Meanwhile, it is truly a remarkable grassroots effort in all counties in the 26th.  If you haven't already -- you should join your counties volunteer committee.

Bye-bye Tom (0.00 / 0)

Who probably has the most secure job in upstate New York.

Yeah, but... (0.00 / 0)
no self-respect.  Reynolds is as low as they go.

True to his pattern (0.00 / 0)
Tom Reynolds has never represented the interests of the voters in his district. He has always put the interests of the Republicans party over the interests of his constituents.

Go Jon Powers! Talk about change we can believe in.

If you have first hand knowledge... (0.00 / 0)
Maybe now would be a good time to post some grassroots/hands-on ways to support Jon Powers?

Thanks!

This is exactly the same kind of failed leadership (0.00 / 0)
That Chris Lee will follow right in Tommy Reynolds footsteps on, its time that we have a Congressman that will vote with the aspirations and hopes of the people of the 26th district and do whats morally right and just.  Its time for a change, its time for Jon Powers.

Higgins/Reynolds (0.00 / 0)
Higgins not voting is not a huge deal. If he had voted, we know what side he would be on. There could have been a number of reasons why he missed the vote.

You won't get an answer from Reynolds unless it's something he agrees with you on. After he voted for legislation that would slash funding for financial aid when there was still a Republican Congress, I wrote him a two page letter telling him my personal story and asking why he would cast such a vote.

I'm still waiting on that response.

Tom Reynolds was once considered the next Speaker of the House. That is how quick he rose to prominence as a Republican congressman. Mark Foley and the NRCC did him in. The Mark Foley scandal really showed people what kind of guy Reynolds is. The NRCC scandal and his fall from the NRCC top spot was the end of the line for him. Now, he won't seek reelection and might be in line to become the head of the New York Republican Party.

Reflecting on THAT job (0.00 / 0)
If you think about what it is that the job "head of the New York Republican Party" involves, I guess he would be a perfect fit.  Recent stories in the news about the raid of former NYS GOP head William Powers   lobbying office makes it clear that Reynolds has the right kind of qualifications for the job: familiar with "creative accounting" that allows for the siphoning of large sums to private individuals, the "revolving door" approach to lobbying, and, let's not ever forget, being able to "look the other way" when somebody they are supposed to be advising is breking the law-- even such uncontroversial laws as "don't hit your wife" and "don't screw underage teens."  This guy is disgusting-- which might mean he is the kind of leader they look for.

Polite correction (4.00 / 2)
As a troll-rated commenter notes in a very impolite manner, there is a small error in this post, doubtless inadvertant on the part of new-diarist Mr. Ubio.  Reynolds' middle initial is "M" not "N." It is correct in the vote record, but not in the title of the post.

Here is some info about TAP that some folks may not know:

1- impolite comments may be troll-rated by readers logged into the site.  Accumulated troll-ratings may result in the comment being hidden (not viewable) in the post.

2- hidden comments can still be viewed, if desired, by going to the "hidden comments" link on the right of the screen under Menu.

3- should a commenter point out an inadvertant error in a diary, the diary writer can easily correct that by going to the post, and clicking the "edit post" link under the post title.

TAP strives for both accuracy and decorum.  As a commmunity, we draw nearer to that through respectful participation.

Thanks for making me a better blogger (4.00 / 1)
