DFNYC Endorses Henry, Powell - Not Squadron

by: phillip anderson

Tue Jun 17, 2008 at 17:10:51 PM EDT

Democracy for New York City today announced endorsements of Luke Henry in the AD-64 primary and Kevin Powell who is challenging Ed Towns in NY-10. Oddly, the members of DFNYC decided to take a pass on Dan Squadron in the SD-25 race. Via email:

DFNYC recently held an endorsement vote in the Democratic primary races for US Congress in District 10 (Brooklyn) and NY State Assembly
in District 64 (lower Manhattan), Democracy for NYC members voted to endorse:

Kevin Powell, running against incumbent Congressman Ed Towns in District 10:  72%.

Luke Henry, running against incumbent State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and Paul Newell in District 64:  67%.

DFNYC also held an endorsement vote in the State Senate race in District 25, but neither Senator Martin Connor nor Daniel Squadron achieved the 60% necessary for the DFNYC endorsement.

I'm puzzled by the Henry endorsement, ambivalent about the Powell endorsement and truly baffled by the lack of an endorsement in SD-25.

They backed Diamondstone last time... (0.00 / 0)
So it is clear (or maybe its clear) that Connor wasn't a favorite. It's interesting that they have rallied behind Jimmy Dahroug but they don't back Squadron.

Support our troops, not the war.

This is a total distortion concerning Connor/Squadron (0.00 / 0)
In 2006 Connor did not seek the DFNYC endorsement. This year, Connor participated in their debate and posted on their website seeking the endorsement.

Just read and compare the statements to see which candidate sounds more liberal.

The story and comments here makes it look like Squadron just missed the 60% reequired. The fact is the vote was Connor 42%, Squadron 34% or something close to that.

When push came to shove, groups which voted for Diamondstone last time are abandonning Squadron in droves. CODA (where Squadron got ZERO votes) and Lambda have gone with Connor, while at CBID and DFNYC, Connor ended up being edged out by "no endorsement", with Squadron running a poor third.

Only at the longtime pro-Schumer (even against Mark Green) DID has Squadron come out ahead.

um, (4.00 / 2)
are you effin' high? oh, how very, i dunno, gatemouth of you.

When push came to shove, groups which voted for Diamondstone last time are abandoning Squadron in droves.

In droves? the WFP endorsement of diamondstone in '06 was hardly insignificant. and wait, who did they endorse in this race this cycle?

oh, that's right, they endorsed squadron. in fact, it was one of, if not the, first senate endorsement of the year for them. is a statewide party with a ballot line that insignificant to you and your beloved status quo hack?

it is really funny to me how you relentlessly critique "progressives" in private and then make the "progressive" argument in public when it suits your purposes, mr "even against mark green."

TODAY is day one. It always is.

You mean the Pro-Silver/Pro-Maziarz WFP? (0.00 / 0)
Surely they are the gold standard in endosing worthy candidates. NOT!

And, I was really referring to Democratic groups here. This is a Democratic primary after all. If Squadron or Silver lose their primary, it's game set and match, and the WFP line in the general election will be meaningless.

Though it might prove useful to Maziarz. Just sayin'

And the fact remains. Despite everyone's expectation to the contrary, at Lambda, DFNYC and CBID Connor outpolled Squadron.

Gatemouth... (0.00 / 0)
is absolutely toxic.  I hope he isn't erupting again into another round of commenting under a new handle.  If he is, you should ban his ass because he's acting a role that's utterly and completely cynical and in bad faith.

Cynical? (0.00 / 0)
Pete, perhaps you can you explaim to me what in the blues blazes does the word cynical means to a man who endorsed Carl Andrews' election to Congress?

[ Parent ]
Why so puzzling? (0.00 / 0)
The only thing that really differentiates Newell and Henry is their choice of profession. They both seem like genuine, reform-minded individuals, even if they are both a little green on the issues. I think the question is simply which is more likely to pose a serious challenge to Silver. Henry was punchier and connected better at the DFNYC forum. Simple as that.

as someone who has spoken at length (4.00 / 1)
to both henry and newell, i would argue that, in terms of their "greenness" on the issues, there isn't much comparison. and that's all i care to say about that.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Yeah... (0.00 / 0)
...this is all very puzzling. Not necessarily the choices I would have made or even the races I would have gotten involved in, frankly.

Quite frankly... (0.00 / 0)
I don't care who DFNYC endorses. They need to pick someone who they believe best represents their views. That's fine. I get it.

If I endorse any candidates, will anyone care? I don't think so. If they do, they are foolish. Let's say I endorse Paul Newell. Newell is a good candidate in my eyes, but that's just my endorsement of him. That doesn't mean everyone in AD-64 will jump on the Robert Harding bandwagon.

DFNYC can endorse anyone they want. They have endorsed Steve Harrison. They have endorsed Jimmy Dahroug. They have endorsed other candidates as well. Some win, others lose. But in the end, DFNYC picks who they believe best fits their mold. That mold may or may not correspond with the will of the voters.

DFNYC announced what percentage of the vote all their endorsed candidates got but all they said for SD-25 was that none of the candidates reached the 60 percent marker. So don't blame us for assuming anything.

Support our troops, not the war.
