NY-13: GOP Candidate Frank Powers Dies Of Heart Attack

by: robert.harding

Sun Jun 22, 2008 at 16:57:48 PM EDT

Liz has the huge and saddening news out of NY-13 today: GOP candidate Frank Powers has died of a heart attack.

GOP and law enforcement sources confirmed Powers, 68, a retired Wall Street executive and MTA board member, died at his Annfield Court home on Staten Island.

"We're back to square one in terms of finding a candidate," said one obviously shaken Staten Island Republican. "You go from the bizarre to the surreal around here."

UPDATE: Powers' family issued the following statement:

"Our dad Frank passed away early this morning. As you can imagine, this is a difficult time for our family. We would appreciate privacy and time as we make the necessary arrangements."

"We shall have more information when final arrangesments have been made. We thank you for your kindness and cooperation and ask you to keep our dad and family in your prayers."

The personal irony here is that my father is 68 - just as Frank Powers was. Two men of the same age, yet two different outcomes.

Obviously there is a huge story here politically. Who will replace Powers on the ballot? Who will the GOP turn to now in an already complicated race? Sen. Andrew Lanza's name is being tossed around again, among other possible GOP candidates.

However, this is a sad day for the Powers family. My thoughts are with them. We might be on different sides of the aisle, but we are all on the side of humanity.

Our best to the Powers family (0.00 / 0)
so sorry for your loss

Deepest sympathies (0.00 / 0)
I am so sorry for this loss.  I also lost a close family member this week so my heart goes out to the family.

Shocking. Painful. (0.00 / 0)
My condolences to his family.

Sincere condolences to the Powers family (0.00 / 0)
My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Odd Race (0.00 / 0)
This congressional race (for my newly adopted district) has had more unexpected twists and turns and instances of high drama than even the most imaginative soap opera.  I don't even know what to say at this point...

Well, could say: (0.00 / 0)
--that's rough on the family, we feel sympathy for them.
--it's a lucky thing Frances Powell Jr. didn't get on the ballot; if this situation happened and he was, it would probably be difficult for him to handle.
--the republicans on his petition as the committee to handle death or incapacitation of the candidate (you always have to have one) will appoint some dude.

don't think so (0.00 / 0)
i believe that since the petitions haven't been filed yet, the GOP has to come up with someone entirely new to get on the ballot.

the surreal thing for me is that i saw fran jr. at the mermaid parade yesterday playing with his band...

It is difficult to get the news from poems

Yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there.

Really? (0.00 / 0)
I figured they would go ahead and finish up with the petitions they have, and thus give themselves the time to recruit somebody.  I guess if they can get somebody real quick they could just pass petitions, but, sheesh, it was not looking like a quick and easy thing the last time they tried.  Will be interesting to watch.

Condolences to the Powers family (4.00 / 3)
Since stress can cause heart attacks, everyone considering a political campaign should get a serious medical check-up first.

Wow... my condolences to the family. (0.00 / 0)
That's really all that can be said.

Condolences to the Powers family (0.00 / 0)
In a difficult time for them.

May the pain  of his passing fade as soon as possible to leave only cherished memories in its wake.
