Hmmm... I guess I live "somewhere else"?
When I was in college, people would ask me where I was from, and I'd say "New York State". The response was frequently "What borough?"
Adding "upstate" wasn't enough to change that, so I wound up with "beautiful Upstate New York". Which I guess some people took as hostile.
