NY-10: Chappelle Is A No-Show At Powell Fundraiser

by: phillip anderson

Thu Jul 10, 2008 at 10:09:13 AM EDT

I know quite a few folks who were going to this thing last night and it sounds like NY-10 primary challenger Kevin Powell had assembled a pretty good crowd. The candidate was there. About 500 people were there. The headliner? Not so much.

It was no joke.

More than 500 people waiting for a performance by funnyman Dave Chappelle for a political fund-raiser were stunned when he didn't show.

The event at Eugene, a hip-hop club on W. 24th St., was for Kevin Powell, who's challenging incumbent Edolphus Towns for a congressional seat in Brooklyn.

Doors opened at the club at 7 p.m., but shortly after 10 p.m., Powell, 42, faced the inevitable.

"We got a call saying he has missed his first flight and he was trying to catch a second flight, and he didn't catch that one," he said.

Powell said those who bought tickets can come to his next fund-raiser.

No joke indeed.

On the web:
Kevin Powell for Congress.

As a former theater teacher of mine used to say, "What is this, amateur night in Dixie?"

Yes, amateur night, indeed (0.00 / 0)
Only an amateur would think that Ed Towns needs primarying, IMO.  Seniority counts in the House, and benefits both the district and the NY delegation. Hope Powell's supporters learned something from the experience.

I wouldn't go that far (4.00 / 1)
Towns is far too moderate for his district and is not one of our progressive allies.  If a primary challenge from the left isn't legitimate in a D+42 district, where is it legitimate?  Regardless, Powers doesn't have his act together and is really blowing any legitimate chance he may have at the seat.

[ Parent ]
towns is a corporate hack (4.00 / 2)
why on earth would a dem in safe seat, the third bluest district in the nation, be such a fan of killing the estate tax or the absolute abomination known as the bankruptcy bill? (perfect timing on that one right?) who exactly is being represented there? i can assure it's not the residents of his brooklyn district. people in NY-10 need someone who is fighting for their interests, not those of MBNA or verizon (he  carries their water on net neutrality) or the walton family in arkansas.

i honestly don't know all that much about powell, but i'm certainly willing to listen. i'm pretty certain that he'd have to work awfully hard to be as out of touch as ed towns.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

sorry to hear that (0.00 / 0)
Maybe Towns has gotten more out of touch since I followed it more closely.  I do think that there is tremendous value in letting some of our African-American leaders gain and use their seniority in Congress.  But, just like Rangel, I may not always approve of their individual votes on particular bills.  Still, we do need more politically powerful black reps.

[ Parent ]
Sounds like season 3 of the Chappelle Show (0.00 / 0)
only this time, Charlie Murphy and Ashy Larry weren't there as a consolation prize
