NY-26: Davis And His "Gasroots" Campaign

by: robert.harding

Thu Jul 10, 2008 at 17:26:16 PM EDT

I was going to throw up the Jon Powers campaign press release, but then decided that I wanted to touch on this more than just a short analysis and press release would cover.

Jack Davis held an event today at a Sunoco gas station (does he own stock with them too?) where he delivered remarks. The gas station charged $1.50 for gas and Davis covered the difference between that price and what the normal price of gas was. Angel from Rochester Turning was on the scene. In short, this is what she witnessed.

When I arrived there were two Greece Police cars blocking the entrance to the gas station so I couldn't pull in and traffic was snarled along both Long Pond and Ridgeway Roads.  It is interesting to note that this is the way to the local hospital so I wonder if anyone had trouble getting to the hospital around the corner.  I did notice an ambulance having to pull into and out of the congested traffic while this event was being staged although it wasn't delayed more than about 10 seconds at the intersection of Long Pond and Ridgeway.  I can't attest to any further delays the ambulance may have encountered caused by congestion further down the road.

On a personal note, I know that area pretty well after the last week. For those of you in the Rochester area, you will understand this. I took the 390 North to Ridgeway Avenue every day I visited my father. On one occasion, I stopped into the mall for something to eat after seeing him. I saw this Sunoco gas station and there is indeed a hospital nearby.

The Powers campaign called this a "gimmick" but it is much more than that. Davis wasted precious resources (two police officers that could have ben doing something else than providing security for this fiasco) and with congested cars waiting in line for gas, burning more fossil fuels into the air. Davis won't go door to door and he won't run a grassroots campaign.

Apparently, Davis wants to run a "gasroots" campaign. That's right - buy a bunch of gas to bring people out, throw up your banner and bribe a bunch of voters - my gas (Davis did, after all, pay for today) for your vote.

This stunt amazes me. I know for a fact that Davis has paid people just to put up yard signs. I'm sure he paid people to gather signatures for him. Everything about Davis is money. If he can't do it with his money, he won't do it all.

This makes Jack look foolish (0.00 / 0)
Was he wearing a red rubber nose and big floppy shoes?  If this doesn't make Jack look more clownish and out of touch, I fear for this country.  While the fortunate few may have caused enough stir to garner Jack some publicity, this is rich ground for the editorial boards and LTE writers.  This reads like a caricature of a politician straight out of a 1930's movie.

To be fair (0.00 / 0)
In NC-11, Larry Kissel did this in 2006 and was applauded for the effort by the 'roots.  I understand where you're going with this analysis, but there are multiple ways to look at it.

"Never be afraid to stand with the minority when the minority is right, for the minority which is right will one day be the majority."

-William Jennings Bryan

It is pandering... (0.00 / 0)
Either way. I remember hearing about Kissel and I thought the same thing then. Plus, I don't think Kissel can be compared to Davis when it comes to campaign style.

Support our troops, not the war.

Well... (0.00 / 0)
If he wants to pull this stunt again in Buffalo, I'd be more than happy to fill up on his dime.  In fact, he can check out my homemade Powers for Congress bumper sticker while I do it.

amen to that. (0.00 / 0)
I could use cheap gas.

Expecting Robert to be Objective (0.00 / 0)
Would be like asking Powers to be consistent on Choice, the War, or War Kids Relief . . .

Here's some real coverage - http://www.whec.com/article/st...

Enjoy.

  How has Jon been inconsistent?

Define "real coverage" (0.00 / 0)
WNYDEM, give me a break.  Karla Bow, the first "customer" who drove all the way from Lockport is objective reporting?  Ha.  Obviously she was the first car in line, meaning she'd been there for a while before the stunt was even advertised.  Read: either paid to be there or part of the campaign.  Yeah, real objective, "real" coverage.  Hi pot, meet kettle.

I never said I would be objective... (0.00 / 0)
This is a blog, not The Buffalo News. If you want "objectivity" you can read Illuzzi. NY-26 is my home district. I have my opinions about who I think makes the best candidate.

He has been straight on choice. He has repeatedly said to me and others that he is pro-choice.

He has been straight on the war. He supports strategic redeployment. Do I want to bring the troops home now? Yes. But realistically, that can't be done. A strategic withdrawal would allow for a safe and secure withdrawal of our troops from Iraq.

The War Kids Relief non-issue is a Republican talking point WNYDEM. If you want to deal in Republican talking points, you can change your name to WNYGOP and head over to Buffalo Bean or Monroe Rising. Powers has made it clear that he turned WKR over to Charles London. Powers wasn't the one who disabled the WKR website and posted that error message before. That was the people who were supposedly running the website for him.

Support our troops, not the war.

Is you is or is you ain't my constituents? (0.00 / 0)
I think Jack's style can more accurately be compared to Governor Pappy O'Daniel from "Brother, Where Art Thou?".

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.
