SD-61: Iannello Denounces Golisano PAC; Calls On Mesi To Turn Down Funds

by: robert.harding

Thu Jul 10, 2008 at 18:14:58 PM EDT

Michele Iannello spoke out today on the Responsible New York PAC that Tom Golisano is starting along with an "unauthorized multi-candidate political committee" and called on her SD-61 Democratic primary opponent Joe Mesi to "decide whether he wishes to serve the voters of Western New York or a Republican billionaire."

Michele M. Iannello, candidate for the 61st State Senate district, denounced the political committee formed by Tom Golisano, saying the contributions violate New York Election Law. Iannello called on the New York State Board of Elections and, the Office of the Attorney General to begin immediate investigations.

Golisano stated that he was depositing a check for $5 million dollars into his political committee, and press reports have said that Golisano would spend up to $1 million on behalf of candidate Joe Mesi. Iannello said that both would be in violation of campaign finance law.

"Just because Mr. Golisano and Mr. Mesi call it reform, doesn't make it so. In fact, it is just the opposite, it is nothing more than politics as usual and Mr. Mesi looks like just another politician with a with a price tag on him," said Iannello.

Golisano might be a Republican but he's not a traditional Republican. The only reason he turned Republican was for a possible gubernatorial run in 2006. That never happened.

That said, Iannello and her campaign have been outspoken on this issue and very critical of Golisano, especially when it comes to the questions of how legal this PAC is.

Celebrities love publicity (0.00 / 0)
I've made my feelings about Golisano and Mesi plain on this site before.  Michelle has worked incredibly hard to learn about her constituents even before she began this campaign.  She was attending the Democratic Rural Conference when Baby Joe was still fighting to get his boxing license back.

This whole thing makes me queasy.  Millions of dollars for candidates to sign on to Tom's agenda and gain him publicity coupled with a celebrity athlete making his first run at public service just strikes a sour chord with me.  Kinda squashes my enthusiasm.  But on the positive side, I work better when I'm pissed off.

the weekend of the rual confrence Mesi made his annoucement and what was there 3 genesse resident in attendece at the drc who did she get to know ???????

public service what do you call all joe's charity work so befor you talk get your facts

Michelle would be all smiles if she was the choosen one she has seen the polling and its not good for her

and for the record has Mr Golisano choosen anyone yet!!!

Your mother was at the DRC... (0.00 / 0)
So she certainly could tell you that it's not about appealing to voters, but rather networking. I met a lot of people at the DRC, including some people from WNY I hadn't met. Also, I was impressed with Michele's presence at the DRC. I think all three of the SD-61 candidates should have been there. Dan Ward touted his rural roots to me, yet didn't attend the DRC. Mesi could have learned a thing or two about rural Democrats while there.

I like Mesi. He knows that. I am impressed by him as a candidate. But how much charity work you do counts for nothing in politics. It is great exposure and shows you are committed to public service, but you still have to know the issues.

Michele is a very strong candidate with enough experience behind her that she's not a novice but she's not a career politician. I don't know what polling you are going off of (probably the ones Illuzzi mentions) but any polling this far out would give Mesi the advantage because of name recognition.

As for Golisano, you are right - he hasn't chosen anyone yet. But Mesi's name has been said as a possible beneficiary of $1 million.

must be they grow other things in the muck other than onions

but my fact a right

Name Calling Scott? (0.00 / 0)
No, Russ isn't calling names, he's just letting you know that you and your "facts" sound completely buffoon-like because of your poor spelling and grammar.  Russ and I have disagreed, but, he's right, before trying to debate anyone on any subject the least you could do is install a spell-check program so you don't sound like your clueless.

We're just looking out for you buddy!

The facts are this, Michele has been to events in Batavia and Genesee County at least 8 times, Mesi has been here to official events twice, his kick-off and a parade in Stafford, thats all.  People have gotten to know Michele and what she stands for and like her for it, thats why I like her and why I'm supporting her and its also why Michele won the Democratic Endorsement in Genesee County by a vote of 23-1-1.  Those are the facts.

At any rate Scott, here ya go.....

http://www.iespell.com/

This one works pretty well.  If you don't use it, don't come around to this forum and attack others (with such clearly poor grammar), telling them to get their "facts" in line when you don't know what the facts are.

Oh Scott..... (0.00 / 0)
Before you try to use my age as a basis to attack me, at least in my 20 years on the planet I've learned basic grammar.

Confused (0.00 / 0)
Its seems, that you Orleans County Dems are a bit confused about what side your on. You put down a real Democrat like Michelle, who is running in a race that isn't even in your district. Then you support a half baked, fake Democrat in Harold Suhr. When we in Genesee County don't fall under your spell, you pull from your bag of dirty tricks an attempt to highjack our line. If that isn't some Republican want-to-be trick, I don't know what is. How about you stay out of our business and allow us to run our own races? We have this thing about supporting real Democrats with experience!

My kind of politician (0.00 / 0)
That's the kinda stones I admire, cmallow.  I may be nearly as ugly as you ('nearly'), so I appreciate how hard it is to shove that mug in front of voters.

  This is how we roll.

Are we lowering the level of debate?  Cause that gives me an advantage.  I like people who have mud on their heels.  Or even muck on their heels.  I'm sick to death of politicians who pay for voters' gasoline or who leapfrog off their celebrity status. Give me new ideas from someone who's got some skin knocked of her knuckles.

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

Love the regionalism (0.00 / 0)
I'm about half-getting these "muck" and "onion" insults.  Am I correct that it references a long-standing rivalry between the muck farmers and the dry-land farmers and that the Italian immigrants (my grandparents were, too), settled the muck farms?

Anyway, it is great to have this level of debate on which Democrats deserve the primary nod coming from Western NY's rural counties.  Ya'all go!

[ Parent ]
I'm with you (0.00 / 0)
on the exchange. This one is great, I'm in stiches. But she does raise a good point. If one is a true supporter of campaign finance reform this breaks the limits. And it's simply not legal when applied to current law. Enforcement in NY is lax so he'll probably get away with it. But the issue is important. At the end of the day the Senate Democrats lost their benefactor (Spitzer) and Paterson isn't lifting a finger. They are going to need millions to flip the house. But does that make it right? Anyway.... back to onions, spelling, name calling and the candidates' attendence, (that debate was better).

[ Parent ]
Seriously? (0.00 / 0)
You called me on my comedic over-reach.  Kudos to you.  But Michelle wasn't at the DRC to meet and greet, to make hay off her celebrity status.  She was there to learn, not to glad hand people who might've seen her in the papers.

Golisano hasn't come out for anyone, but he's made sufficient noise to point to Baby Joe.  Then, he backed off.  Add to that the fact that the whole legality of Golisano's effort is in question, plus the fact that the website is still not up. That is the definition of a SNAFU.

BTW, the value of vegetables in New York State in 2005 totaled $461 million. Fresh Market vegetables rank 6th and processing vegetables are 7th among all states. Leading crops in New York are cabbage, sweet corn and onions.

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

dont worry about me (0.00 / 0)
i spell the way i do but you all must understand what i mean because you respond and as for your age dan you must be insecure, and charity work is public service robert and as for the polling i have seen came from the people that took the poll not mr Ulluzie site and what about the gov visit wasnt that in gc he attended the church festivel and had a meet and greet at ri-Da ns so your number of two is False

thanks for the spell check cant install it

The only poll that matters... (0.00 / 0)
Is on Primary Day (Sept. 9). I remember a certain millionaire industrialist from Akron who was supposedly beating a certain inept congressman in the polls by double digits with a month to go.

Charity work isn't public service by default. Joe Mesi's version of charity work does include engaging children and people. But saying charity work is public service is misleading. Some define charity work as giving money. Any rich guy or gal can write a check to a charity of their choice. But it's another thing to actually engage that charity.

Insecure? (0.00 / 0)
Ha!  With that 8 number I was talking about Democratic sponsored events, however, when we move outside of that figure into total general events that does mean that Joe has been to 4 or 5, Michele has been to probably 15 or 16, at Michele's best and Joe's worst its a 15-5 margin, is that even comparable?  Is it Scott?

I don't think that I'm the insecure one here.

[ Parent ]

Is it Joe Mesi or Scott whose brain bleeds?

[ Parent ]
Mesi is totally in Golisano's sights (0.00 / 0)
From the press conference:
Kristen Donnelly, WGRZ: And have you talked to Joe Mesi?
Golisano: I've talked to Joe; I know Joe
Donnelly: Do you think he'd fit in with your agenda?
Golisano: [laughs/stalls] I...I'm not sure Joe knows yet, at this point.

Forget for a second the fact that it's completely and totally illegal to donate or spend a total of more than $150K with the intention of influencing elections. Forget that it's illegal for any person or committee that has met with Joe Mesi to spend more than 15,500 bucks toward his election.

Wait...don't forget those things at all - their FELONIES.

More of the same.. (0.00 / 0)
Its looks like even our own are falling prey to big money now. Our lines appear to be for sale to the highest bidder. Political ideology, experience and integrity seem to mean nothing even, to some Democrats at this point. I guess there are two types of Democrats, ones that care about ideology and then the ones that want to win at all costs. Ask yourself if it really matters if the guy in office is a "D" or an "R" if they stand for the same thing? The idea that Democrats would try to justify some millionaire buying an election is disgraceful. Put down the tainted cool-aid, nobody gives big money to a Politian unless they want something for their trouble. This whole "reform" line is just a cover for more of the same, corruption. Why would a millionaire Republican give money to a Democrat, unless he was in his back pocket?

I'm sure the Republicans had the same discussion years ago, they picked the winning at all costs route..

If you want to call Harold a name look him in the eye or pick up a phone, your nothing but a key board baby you saw how much pull you had to stop us from being on the line in gc county you cant!!!!! learn the law,  so are assembly race does over lap your senate race so we are part of it, learn the distric you repersent and for your info i am not a member of the county committee in orleans

Picture is worth a thousand misspelled words (0.00 / 0)
As for OUR senate race, not one inch of that district is not your Orleans County dictatorship. Since you can't read here is a picture for you.

Knowing both sides... (0.00 / 0)
I have never heard Charlie call Harold any names. Charlie wasn't the "politicle rookie" here. He is the chair of the county that has the largest population in the 139th. Harold should have been there first.

And why should you go to Genesee County first? The numbers from 2006 tell that story Scott. In November 2006, Gary lost by over 5,000 in Genesee County.

You are running against Steve Hawley, a man who is a force in Genesee County. If you want any chance of beating him, you have to go to his base.

People in Orleans County know Harold. He ran for Legislature in 2007 and was a strong enough candidate to get 42 percent of the vote. Building up a core group of volunteers in Orleans County would take care of Orleans County for Harold. He needs to focus on other counties more - first of which is Genesee County.

Just because the 139th AD overlaps with the 61st SD doesn't mean you are "part of it. "The 139th is its own district. The 61st is a completely different district. The 61st encompasses all of Genesee. The 139th encompasses the northern and central parts of Genesee County.

I don't know Charlie Mallow too well, but I know he is a man of integrity. He is City Council President in Batavia (I remember you used to love watching him on TV Scott), he is the Democratic chair in Genesee County and he works a full-time job. If there's one thing I can say about Charlie it is that he is the hardest working person I know. How he finds time to sleep boggles my mind.

We need more Charlie Mallows in politics. If everyone was like Charlie and had that same work ethic, we would be better off.

A state senator... (0.00 / 0)

WHAT WOULD YOU CALL HALF BAKED FAKE BAKE CANIDATE LIKE HAROLD JUST SCROLL UP A FEW COMMENTS you will see it and we can agree to disagree put all officle reepsent all ny

Scott... (0.00 / 0)
You have insinuated that Charlie is a liar and even demanded his resignation. What I'm referring to is the past, not this back and forth. You both have said things in the heat of the moment against each other.

Yes, all officials represent all of New York. But there is a reason why you have statewide seats (Governor, Comptroller, AG) and why you have seats like state senator and assemblymember. Senators and assemblymembers are responsible for representing their districts. They aren't elected in statewide elections. They are elected by a district to go to Albany. Do their votes and proposed legislation impact NY? Sure. But they also need to do what's best for their district and hopefully vote for the district's best interests.

Support our troops, not the war.

Scott, (0.00 / 0)
I'm sorry for making fun of your spelling. It wasn't productive. Being on bad relations with you and your mother is not my goal and doesn't benefit either of us. The issue to me in this blog is your continued attack on our endorsed candidate for State Senate. We feel very strongly that Michele is the person we need to represent us. In your position, you obviously have a different vantage point as to what a State Senator does. From my point of view as an elected official, I need to have a Senator who is working for the municipality that I represent. Michele is the only candidate who has proven to be capable of that to me. She has the experience and ideology that I expect in a state official.

As for the separate issue of the 139th, I don't know Harold Suhr. He has never called me. He is NOT a Democrat. He has NEVER officially asked for our endorsement or help. He has NOT proven to be a person that is ideologically inline with my principles as a Democrat. He has never demonstrated a desire or intention to work with the municipalities or even the Democratic committee in my county. The full committee voted unanimously NOT to endorse Harold Suhr. My committee also believes it is not in our best interest of County Democrats for me to sign an authorization, to let your candidate onto our line. Your committee took it upon yourself to hurt our working relationship with a legal maneuver to get this person on our line. I cannot in good faith as the chair of my county party let the public go into that ballot box without knowing the reasons we do not believe Harold Suhr should be representing us. As his campaign manager you have miscalculated the need to open your tent wide. You know as well as I do even with full support of all of our committees the chances are limited that a Democrat is going to unseat Steve Hawley. You have divided our party and assured a Hawley victory.

Scott, (0.00 / 0)
I think it's safe to say that Robert can prove that I signed up for my account last night. I only visited this site because I heard you were bashing our candidate. Should I sit back and do nothing because, I once told you that I don't read blogs? Scott, I don't care what you say about me. It's my job to take the flack for my people; I knew what I signed up for when I became chair. Get back to the topic at hand. Why do you feel the need to impact our State Senate race and insult our candidate?

[ Parent ]
Easy (0.00 / 0)
He's working for Joe Mesi.

[ Parent ]
Why should he resign? (0.00 / 0)
Because you had a disagreement with him?

There are more important things to focus on than a dispute over an Assembly race that we aren't going to win. I feel both sides could have handled this differently. Scott, you should have had Harold in Genesee County right from the get go. You labeled Charlie a rookie, yet you made the biggest rookie mistake of all. That would be like Jon Powers running and ignoring Erie, Monroe and Niagara counties.

Charlie has a right to defend his line, but we also have to see the writing on the wall. Getting Jon Powers elected is the most important race we have in our area. If that's what we stand for, we shouldn't be worried about who is running for the Assembly.

We have the Assembly. We can't be looking at this with selfish desires. We need more teamwork in the Democratic Party and we need to realize that the Assembly is low on the list of priorities this year. There are two big things we want to do: (1) Take back the Senate and (2) Win the three upstate congressional districts and take them from red seats to blue seats.

That's where our attention should be. Instead, we are bickering about an Assembly race that we will lost by 30-35 percentage points.

Let's get focused on the REAL golden ring. We can get Jon Powers elected to Congress, Michele Iannello, Joe Mesi or Dan Ward elected to the Senate and making our respective counties better places to live.

Support our troops, not the war.
