Senate GOP Strategy Revealed! Run Away From Senate GOP

by: phillip anderson

Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 15:16:54 PM EDT

I think we now have a pretty good idea of how the last Republican State Senate Majority leader of our lifetimes, Dean Skelos, plans to try to hold on to his rather tenuous and doomed majority. Basically, they are planning to hopelessly play offense while they've got incumbents in real, genuine danger and, perhaps most importantly, they are going to run away from their own party and the dysfunction they've helped create over the last 70 years or so.

Take a look at the TV ads that Skelos' crew is funding for three of their challengers. There a number of common themes running through all three of them. First, never will you see one of these candidates identify themselves as a Republican, even though, despite their claims of "independence", the Republican Senate Committee now being run by Skelos is bankrolling these ads. Second, not only will they not identify themselves by party, they are all running against something they refer to as "Albany". I'm assuming this is the same Albany that their party has had a major hand in running into the ground all these years. That's right, these seemingly party-less challengers are all running for the state Senate in order to clean up the very dysfunction that their party, the ones funding the ads, largely helped create and, especially in the case of the GOP controlled Senate, have robustly defended. They do so while claiming to be "independent" leaders called to the fight against a corrupt and out of touch Albany. That's rich.

Take a look at Barbara Donno's ad, paid for by over $350,000 dollars from Skelos (Take that, Joe Robach!):

She's "not a typical politician" who is running because "Albany isn't listening." OK. It should be mentioned that her chances of actually defeating Craig Johnson are slim at best. In reality, this campaign is not much more than a personal vendetta for Skelos and Joe Mondello, both of whom simply haven't gotten over the fact that they lost this seat last year.

Here's an ad by Liz Feld who is running a rather quixotic campaign against Suzi Oppenheimer. You'll see a few of the same themes and notice many of the same omissions:

It should also be noted that Liz Feld's run is just as puzzling as Donno's. She simply isn't going to beat Oppenheimer. It won't even be close, no matter how much money Skelos may choose to dump into it which, given that this race isn't on Long Island, will probably not be anywhere near as much as Donno's.

Finally, check out this ad from SD-48 challenger Dave Renzi. Once again, you'll see the candidate in their home, no mention of party ID and a distinct anti-Albany bent. This one is special though, as it actually mentions the word "dysfunction" and even calls for this year's buzzword, a word Republicans the nation are over are trying desperately to find a way to co-opt, "change." Because, ya know, nothing says "change" in Albany like maintaining the status quo of the GOP Senate majority...

So, there ya go. How does Skelos hope to hang on to his doomed Senate GOP majority? By running away from the fact that there even is a Senate GOP majority and running against the dysfunction perpetuated by the same. He plans to do this by playing offense with long shot (and expensive) candidates who refuse to even identify as Republicans.

This hasn't stopped Skelos and his crew from talking up their chances to reporters though. Check out this gem:

Republicans Feeling Good About Some Senate Seats

Senate Republicans are privately feeling confident about winning back some seats that they have lost in recent years to the Democrats as they seek to retain control of the Senate majority.

Best of luck with that, Dean. When your whole strategy seems to be to run away from your party and from the facts as they are, that's quite a tall order.

Great Post, Phillip. (4.00 / 1)
Couldn't agree more about how the Reps. running as reformers is a bigger joke than any I've heard on Letterman.

I love the use of dysfunction in the ad...and....

Because, ya know, nothing says "change" in Albany like maintaining the status quo of the GOP Senate majority...

hits it out of the park.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Indeed. (0.00 / 0)
It's just... I'm worried that they will find fools who will swallow this cooptation of the reform message...

Great Post Phillip! (0.00 / 0)
I can understand them running away from their party label in Democratic districts like SD7 and SD37 (I think that may be Oppenheimer?) but at any rate to even be running away from party ID and label in SD48!!!  Now that is one really soiled party label! I am glad to see them wasting so much of their resources on these and Stewart-Cousin seats, maybe we can trick them into SD49 Valesky as well to waste some more! The more the spend on these the less they have to defend SD3, 11, 15, 51, 54, 55, 56, 61 and several others! I hope their troll noel is taking notes and will report back to the RSCC!

Let me pull out some of your comments Phil (0.00 / 0)
"they are planning to hopelessly play offense" "run away from their own party and the dysfunction they've helped create" "never will you see one of these candidates identify themselves as a Republican" "they are all running against something they refer to as Albany"

Who else does that describe?

Paterson himself. Canceling appearances at Democratic fundraisers. Running away from the dysfunction he helped create. Turning his back on flipping the Senate, I mean come on - $3M and not one penny to Senate Dems with 90 days to go? Running against "Albany" and even jumping into Mike Long's arms this week. Talk about playing offense, What you describe is a page out of what has become Paterson's own book. I feel a post in me. I'm going off to write.

I have one question for you Phil -- if you are going to say "Best of luck with that, Dean. When your whole strategy seems to be to run away from your party and from the facts as they are, that's quite a tall order." Are you going to say that to Paterson too?

This comment makes no sense at all. (0.00 / 0)
Paterson helping to create dysfunction? Last I checked, Bruno and the Republican majority that created the rules which institutionalized the dysfunction didn't consult much with Paterson about it. They have been busy for the past 61 years making the mess that is now Albany.

As far as him helping the Senate Dems, there is a committee charged with doing just that.

It one carried your argument further, why doesn't Obama fund all the Dem Congressional races and Senate races and state races and local races? He's the leader of the party and he's raised hundreds of millions. Why has he turned his back on the party?

Phillip also wasn't talking about Paterson in this post...he was talking about the Senate and the leadership's strategy. Period.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Makes perfect sense (0.00 / 0)
Think big picture. It's called equating one thing to another. To associate or liken. It's done all the time. Most people take offense to it when you liken to something they don't want to believe. You can look back over 61 years my friend I'm looking at today's dysfunction.

Okay....go after Paterson if you wish... (0.00 / 0)
...but that doesn't address what Phillip was talking about here. The hypocrisy of the Republican Senate candidates running against the dysfunction the Republican majority created.

We've got some work ahead of us.

You mean... (0.00 / 0)
the guy who sponsored Clean Money Clean Elections year after year in the Senate?

The guy who had the administration of state government fall into his lap suddenly when Spitzer foolishly got caught with his pants down around his knees.... and somehow managed to pass a close-to-ontime budget and arrange an orderly transition of adminsitrative functions?

The guy who is staring straight into the economic mess that is Wall St., and going to DC to speak truth and ask the federal government to help people, not banks?

Paterson has done remarkably well under extremely adverse circumstances.  To hold him responsible for all the work of the entire NYS Democratic Party is absurd.  Quit it with the circular firing squad, and get out and support our candidates!

[ Parent ]
Yes I mean (0.00 / 0)
the same Paterson who introduced Clean Elections but dropped it like a hot potato when he became Governor so he could rake in $3.3 Million in a month.

Yes the same Paterson who tried to steel Aubertine away from his seat, then called him a liar when he told.

The same Democratic Governor who bashed all Democratic legislators as lazy and stupid, on 'vacation' and too brain dead to recognize the depression we're in.

Yes, the same Paterson who leaped into the State Conservative party Chairman's arms this week. I mean come on.

This is supposed to be a progressive website. I'm not calling for a circular firing squad but isn't it odd that you'd prefer I shut up about it? Isn't it odd that net root progressives are actually trying to shut down progressive primaries because the candidate isn't theirs or, isn't raising money on actblue or didn't get enough arbitrary number of signatures on their petitions? Haven't we become that which we espouse we want to change.

I like what Phil did here, he put alot of time into this post, he's right on about the dying GOP. But let's not morph into the enemy simply to get ahead. To do so is to  befall the same fate one day my friend.

[ Parent ]
OK with me if you support a challenger.... (0.00 / 0)
...but, Paterson isn't running until 2010, and even "I REALLY wanna be Governor" Andy Cuomo isn't talking about that yet.

When he does, he will be a formidable challenger.  And, I will support open debate about the race on this site.

I always thought that Spitzer's unilateral campaign limits were not the way to go, still think that.  I want CMCE, and I intend to go back to lobby Paterson on it next year, too.

I'm not telling you to shut up, not at all.  It is, however, my opinion that we don't get real far by criticism of the actions of sitting officials.  Better to support those we want, and lobby those who we disagree with.

Right now, I am not at all disagreeing with Paterson's leadership thrust.  Mostly, I happen to think he has been smart and brave.  You think otherwise, that's ok.  But, to return to the topic of the post: I say, let's not run away from our own leadership-- it makes us look, well, inconsistant and like we don't support our leaders.

briefly (0.00 / 0)
1. there's a lot more to the aubertine story than has made the press. (or a lot less, depending on your POV) i've heard the story from three different sources that i trust and it ain't what you think it is. i imagine that it will come out during the coming renzi/aubertine race, but i'm not about to burn the folks that told me about it so i can "break" the story. it's been probably 6 weeks and i still haven't. suffice to say that the real instigator is a former senate majority leader...

2. i don't feel the need to make your argument for you. as i can see, you have done much better than the folks who usually want me to do so by stating it in a separate diary. kudos. this post was about the lameness that is GOP senate challengers running away from both their party and the fact that they are running to perpetuate the very things they claim to be running against. i don't really see where paterson comes into it. you do. that's fine. you made your case which is way better than 95% of the folks that email me everyday complaining about why i won't do it for them.

TODAY is day one. It always is.
