SD-25: Connor Endorsed By Five Congressmembers

Sen. Martin Connor received four endorsements today from congressmembers in his tough Democratic primary with Dan Squadron.

Connor was endorsed today by Rep. Carolyn Maloney, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, Rep. Nydia Velázquez and Rep. Edolphus Towns. Towns, who is in a primary of his own with Kevin Powell, could not attend the press conference today announcing these endorsements.

Incumbent Democrats have been rallying around Connor, including Democrats at the state level. Last week, Connor was endorsed by Sen. Liz Krueger, Sen. Eric Schneiderman, Sen. Thomas Duane, Sen. Velmanette Montgomery, Sen. Eric Adams and Sen. Martin Dilan. There have also been fundraisers for Connor that have featured many state officials.

Squadron has a big endorsement in his back pocket though. Sen. Chuck Schumer has backed Squadron and notified Connor that he would do so at the DRC convention in April.

More on the Connor endorsements to come.

UPDATE: There was a fifth congressmember to come out and support Connor. Rep. Yvette Clarke also endorsed Connor today.

Here is more on the endorsements today from the press release:

"Marty Connor has my full support for re-election in the Democratic Primary Election. I have worked hand in hand with him on behalf of our constituents on the Lower East Side and in Brooklyn. He is always there fighting for NYCHA residents and tenants. He can always be counted on to stand up for the progressive positions on all the issues. I will be working very hard to insure his re-election. Our constituents need him to continue as their Senator in Albany." - Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez

"Marty Connor has well served our shared constituents in Lower Manhattan, Tribeca and SoHo. After 9/11 we worked jointly to care for the immediate needs of our residents who were in need of assistance and together he joined me in challenging the federal and local governments' false assurances about the environment in Lower Manhattan and the inadequacy of the clean-up. Having served with him in Albany and then as the Congressman representing part of his district I know first-hand of his commitment to progressive politics. I endorse his re-election in the Democratic Primary without reservation."
- Congressman Jerrold Nadler

More praise for Connor from Maloney, Towns and Clarke below the fold.

"I am proud to stand with my distinguished colleagues Jerry Nadler and Nydia Velazquez in strong support of the re-election bid  of State Senator Marty Connor.  As we fight for New York in Washington, we need a partner in Albany like Marty Connor who has the compassion and the know-how to get things done and deliver for our great city.  I served on the staff of the New York State Senate for several years, and I can personally attest personally to Marty Connor courage and leadership in standing up for progressive principles.  But Marty Connor doesn't just talk the talk - he walks the walk. During his years in the Senate, Marty Connor has been a champion for health care, and for women, children and families.  He's been a vital leader in the effort to protect the delivery of quality medical care to the underprivileged, the elderly, and people with disabilities. . . . Marty Connor has also been a champion for the needs of hard-working New Yorkers . . . [and] has also has been a stalwart champion for women's reproductive rights and for the LGBT community... .   Marty Connor is an effective and dedicated public servant.  I am proud to endorse his candidacy." - Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney

"I am proud to endorse Senator Marty Connor for re-election in the Democratic Primary. I do so because I have seen first-hand the hard work on behalf of the constituents and know well his progressive stance on all issues. Marty has been a leading and courageous opponent of the death penalty in Albany and has fought for funding for legal services for homeowners at risk of losing their homes to sub-prime foreclosures. Senator Connor is a leader in the fight for women's rights and protection of women and children from domestic abuse. He deserves re-election."- Congressman Edolphus Towns

"I'm endorsing Marty Connor for re-election to the State Senate in the Primary Election because I know how hard he has been working for our constituents in Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. He has taken progressive positions on all of the issues and is always to be found defending civil rights and civil liberties in the State Senate. He stands up for women and children, for more affordable housing and for more and better public schools. We need him back in the State Senate." - Congresswoman Yvette Clarke

The establishment always fears these type of challengers.  If an entrenched incumbent like Connor can be defeated by a progressive upstart, than none of these incumbents are safe.  Nydia Velazquez is the chair of the House Progressive Caucus.  Let's read between the lines.

Excellent point BingChester! (0.00 / 0)
It reminds me very much of the MD 4 Congressional primary that Donna Edwards waged against Al Wynn.  It was shocking how dozens upon dozens of congress-critters and local pols came out to endorse Wynn.  The CBC, Maxine Waters etal, I mean you would have thought that Wynn was a consistent Democratic Party agenda supporter instead of the corporatist tool he became. Donna prevailed without any elected supporters but tons and tons of grassroots foot soldiers and netroots fundraisers and media supporters.  Now, I do not know Dan Squadron and will not compare him or the issues he has raised to Donna Edwards nor do I know enough about Connors to compare him to an Al Wynn but this outpouring of elected officials circling the wagons is very reminiscent of that election.

Don't forget the support for Joe Lieberman in '06.  Good to see how he repays it.
