Brian added these comments on the state of the campaign and his reasons for entering the race:

Today is a critical reporting deadline.  Your support for my campaign would be most appreciated. Anything that you can contribute through my webpage at www.foleyforsenate.com will help us achieve the change we need. Like you, I have watched as our neighborhoods have become unaffordable for our children, denying them the chance to raise their families in the communities where they grew up. Our property taxes continue to go up and up, making New Yorkers the highest taxed families in the country.  And, the current conservative Republican leadership in the State Senate has done nothing to ease the crushing burden of unfunded mandates that force local government to raise our property taxes.

People are calling for change from the White House to the State House, but in Albany, just like in Washington, the current Republican leadership has turned a deaf earn to our concerns. That is why I have decided to run for State Senate.

This will not be easy.  I am challenging a 36 year Republican incumbent who is protected by a Republican machine desperate to win at any cost. The Senate Republicans have hired George Bush's political consultant and Newt Gingrich's pollster and will use every dirty trick in the book as part of their effort to cling to their fading majority. They will spend millions against me, but so long as we stand together, we will not be denied the change our State desperately needs.

I am no stranger to tough fights.  As a County Legislator I fought to increase access to higher education, creating a new scholarship program while strongly opposing tuition hikes.  I took on the hospitals to make them safer and stood up to special interests like the tobacco lobby to create new protections against secondhand smoke in the workplace.

When I became Supervisor for the Town of Brookhaven, I inherited a Town government notorious for corruption and swimming in red ink. By fighting back against the entrenched Republicans, I saved Brookhaven taxpayers over $10 million by insisting on efficiency and accountability; ended 45 years of no-bid insurance contracts; restored Wall Street's 'Positive Outlook' by eliminating $15 million in inherited deficits, and preserved 1,100 acres of land - all in my first two years in office. Like those fights, this will be a tough battle, but together we can win. We have to win.

Because after four decades of politics as usual, we simply can no longer afford the broken system we have now. My Republican opponent will have plenty of special interest money to spend attacking me, while we will be running a grassroots effort to reach as many voters as we can. Already, we've knocked on thousands of doors and are gaining support every day.

But I need your help to reach even more. Your contribution will ensure that my candidacy will have the resources needed to take on the Republican party and fight for the progress we deserve.  Every contribution matters, but donations that come in by midnight tonight are critical.  So I urge you to go to my website at www.foleyforsenate.com and click on the contribute button today.

Thank you, and I hope I can count on your support. For more information about my record achievement go to www.foleyforsenate.com With gratitude,

Brian X. Foley
Candidate for NYS Senate
Brookhaven Town Supervisor
