Dear Assemblyman McKevitt,
As a resident of the 17th, I am concerned to learn that you voted for Tom DiNapoli to be New York State Comptroller. A Blue-Ribbon panel of former state comptrollers made its recommendations, and Tom DiNapoli was not on that list.
While I firmly believe that Mr. DiNapoli is a dedicated public servant, this selection should have been based on competence, not character. It appears that Tom DiNapoli has much work to do in familiarizing himself with the state's finances.
In a strike against effective governance, Leaders Silver and Bruno advanced DiNapoli's candicacy, ostensibly to promote "one of their own". Being in the minority, you likely received little of their arm-twisting. In fact, your Minority Leader Tedesco voted for Martha Stark, an actual comptroller.
Perhaps you voted for DiNapoli to support a fellow Long Islander, but if that were your intent, I'm curious as to why you did not support the candidacy of Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman, endorsed by the independent panel and the New York Times.
Many of your constituents are concerned about DiNapoli's appointment and do not think the best candidate was selected. Please let me know why you support DiNapoli and his qualifications for the job. Thank you kindly for your response (via email if possible), and I hope that you will be a future ally of Governor Spitzer's reform measures.
Sincerely,
tzfoley
I'll be sure to post any response. Assemb. McKevitt is the gentleman to step up after Maureen O'Connell was elected County Clerk, which means at one time I had the honor of being represented by the Chuck Norris of Long Island politics, Mrs. O'Connell herself. Lucky me :)
