NY-21: Rep. Maloney To Campaign With Brooks Tomorrow

by: robert.harding

Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 14:59:02 PM EDT

Tracey Brooks won't be campaigning alone tomorrow night. Brooks will be joined by Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who endorsed Brooks last week.

WHO: Tracey Brooks and Rep. Carolyn Maloney

WHAT: Campaign Event

WHERE: Book House at Stuyvesant Plaza, 1475 Western Ave. Albany

WHEN: From 7 to 8 p.m. tomorrow

Here is more from the press release:

"Tracey brings hands-on community experience to Congress and will be a strong voice for families on guaranteeing health care for all, protecting a woman's right to choose, and getting our economy back on track," Congresswoman Maloney.

Congresswoman Maloney will also be on hand to sign copies of her book, Rumors of Our Progress Have Been Greatly Exaggerated: Why Women's Lives Aren't Getting Any Easier--And How We Can Make Real Progress For Ourselves and Our Daughters.

"Congresswoman Maloney and I have the same priorities---helping our working families here at home, improving health care, and protecting the rights of women," Brooks said. "I am honored and delighted to have her support in this race, and I look forward to working closely with her Washington."

It's one thing to endorse a candidate and it's another to actively campaign for them. Maloney should be an asset for Brooks tomorrow and moving forward.

A Congresswoman from NYC? (4.00 / 1)
Not sure if that will be an asset or a burden in the Capital District.

I remember when... (0.00 / 0)
Rep. Steve Israel came to Buffalo to help out Jon Powers. It was a great fundraiser and Rep. Israel went around afterwards, talked to people and shook hands.

Plus, among our New York congressional delegation, there is probably no one better than Rep. Maloney to campaign with as a female candidate or as ANY candidate.

Representative Who? (4.00 / 1)
Among people on the campaign trail, this is exactly what I have heard regarding both Paul's endorsement from Rep. Hinchey and Tracey's endorsement from Rep. Maloney.

I can't say that I agree with your statement - why do you believe Representative Maloney has any more pull than any other member of the delegation?

Or really, any pull whatsoever being over 100 miles away from her district?

I remember living in Western NY - if you brought Rep. Slaughter around Rochester she was more likely to get rotten vegetables thrown at her than praise...

I just don't think that sitting Rep.'s have much pull with voters, particularly when they are from a district that isn't remotely like ours and when Congress is viewed as the problem - not the solution. (I don't agree with that sentiment - but it seems a common thread as I am knocking on doors across the district)

I agree (4.00 / 1)
She doesn't have any more pull in this area.

I'm not impressed by outside congresisonal endorsements. Tonko-HincheyBrooks got Maloney. No one in NY-21 knows who they are nor will they be swayed by them.

I semi-agree (0.00 / 0)
While an out-of-district polical endorsement may not have pull, Tonko and Brooks gaining the endorsement of sitting Congressional Representatives at the very least signals that  the hopeful representatives have demonstrated the ability to earn the support of a potential future colleague.  It's a drop in the bucket, yes, but in a race this contested, every drop counts.

I'm wondering aloud whether the Steck or Shahinfar campaigns are courting any Congressional endorsements.  In particular, it's interesting that Congresswoman Kirstin Gillibrand has not endorsed Darius Shahinfar because he used to work for her.  I wouldn't be surprised if that rolls out just before primary day.

Of course, the whole reason we have an open primary is because Rep. McNulty, the current Congressman, decided to make no endorsement in the first place.
