Responsible New York Endorses Candidates, Incumbents For New York State Senate

by: robert.harding

Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 02:09:37 AM EDT

Tom Golisano's PAC, Responsible New York, has announced its endorsements of 47 incumbents and challengers (39 incumbents and eight challengers) for New York State Senate this year. Some of the endorsements aren't surprising, given that Golisano and Responsible New York endorsed 13 candidates last week, most of whom were state senate candidates. Golisano also endorsed David Nachbar, who is a Democratic state senate candidate running against Republican Jim Alesi. Those endorsements that were announced last week included Rick Dollinger and Joe Mesi on the Democratic side and Barbara Donno and Sen. Jim Seward on the Republican side, among others.

Golisano PAC Puts Out Endorsement List

The group is backing eight challengers, including six Democrats and two Republicans-enough to certainly shake the power structure of Republicans' narrow 31-29 lead in the Senate.

Responsible New York is not endorsing candidates in 15 races.

So let's see, that's 47 candidates divided by Golisano's $5 million into the PAC. That's about $106,000 a race. (The $5M check is above.)

But Golisano and his co-chairs say not every race will be funded equally, and will depend on the competitiveness of the races. They said they haven't made any funding decisions yet.

The most notable candidates and incumbents that Golisano's PAC backed include:

- Democrat Brian Foley was backed in SD-3 over Sen. Caesar Trunzo. Out of all the downstate races, this is becoming the top pickup for the Democrats. Golisano backing Foley certainly means something.

- There is no endorsement in SD-15, where Democrat Joseph Addabbo will be challenging Republican Sen. Serph Maltese.

- Sen. Darrel Aubertine was endorsed by Golisano over Republican David Renzi. This seat (SD-48) is a target for Republicans, although they did not put up a strong candidate.

Responsible New York will be backing Assembly candidates and those will be announced soon.

I believe that.... (0.00 / 0)
They've already endorsed Barbara Kavanaugh in the 144th AD.

That's old news... (0.00 / 0)
Not only did they endorse her, but Golisano gave her $3,800. That was the first of his targets, which makes sense since Pigeon and Hoyt dislike each other.

Buying Votes (0.00 / 0)
I fail to understand why seemingly everyone is so excited about the Golisano money. He's doing nothing but buying favors. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being naive. All of the candidates from both parties who are taking money from his PAC should be ashamed of themselves. But I guess the appeal of "free" money is just too good for some to resist.

Amen brother. (4.00 / 1)
besides, it's illegal.

[ Parent ]
It's not illegal (0.00 / 0)
To endorse candidates. That's all he has done so far.

Support our troops, not the war.

[ Parent ]
Not true (0.00 / 0)
he's donated $5,000,000 to a Political Committee. That breaks the law because its more than the $150,000 aggregate annual limit.

[ Parent ]
He's not really buying favors... (0.00 / 0)
Let's look at some of these endorsements.

In SD-25, Golisano backed Marty Connor. Why? Because Connor used to do some work for Golisano. His answers on the questionnaire might have looked good but it was his personal connection that got him Golisano's backing.

In SD-55 and SD-56, I believe Dave Nachbar and Rick Dollinger have connections with Golisano also. Nachbar is a fellow Rochester-area businessman and Dollinger, to my knowledge, has some sort of friendship with Golisano.

There are reasons why Mesi and Maziarz were endorsed. There is a reason why Barbra Kavanaugh will be one of the endorsed Assembly candidates. That reason is Steve Pigeon.

Plus, you have to consider that he backed 39 incumbents. You could say he's buying favors but these are people who are already in office. It's not like Golisano has never done business in this state before. He is not new to Albany.

Support our troops, not the war.

[ Parent ]
Clearly he's buying favors (0.00 / 0)
are you that blind to reality?

[ Parent ]
No I'm not blind... (0.00 / 0)
But let me bring a different viewpoint to the table, if that's alright with you...

Michael Bloomberg has cut huge checks for the New York State GOP in the past. That's no secret. He wrote one for $500,000 earlier this year and did the same thing two years. He's also given more money along the way. Bloomberg lives in the bluest city this state has to offer and perhaps the country has to offer. New York City is the reason this state is a Democratic state.

Don't you think that when these billionaires write checks that they are just trying to flex some muscle and show that they have a stash of cash to give out to candidates?

After all, they are billionaires. They already have influence. They don't get that from "buying favors." They get that because they have over $1 billion in their bank accounts. Plus, if Golisano was "buying favors," why didn't he endorse Skelos or Smith? He endorsed other incumbents who are safe in their seats, so why not the leaders? After all, the leadership is where the true "favors" are. If he really wanted to buy favors, he would have given to them.

Support our troops, not the war.

[ Parent ]
I think you are blind..... (0.00 / 0)
So because Bloomberg does it it's OK? It that what you are trying to say?

Yes, Billionaires already have influence, that isn't my point. My point is that this money isn't free and the way that some people are touting it like some great thing I find disgusting. This attitude that "Oooohhhh Tommy is giving money to the best candidates from both sides of the aisle so it must be OK." Ugh. Give me a break.

And Golisano isn't stupid, by giving money to a lot of candidates instead of just a very few powerful ones, he has fooled a lot of people, you included, into thinking he is being altruistic. Yet he has still just garnered a ton of favors from a lot of elected officials. Sad, sad, sad.

[ Parent ]
Did I say it was OK? (0.00 / 0)
No, I didn't. The point of mentioning Bloomberg is that there is a precedent for a wealthy billionaire to give money to candidates or parties in New York. Whether it's right or wrong is irrelevant because right now, our campaign finance system in New York allows this to happen. If anything, Golisano's giving (and Bloomberg's) gives us a great case FOR campaign finance reform and public financing of elections.

And who said he was giving to the best candidates? I sure didn't. He gave to Republicans and Democrats alike. He gave to Barbara Donno for God's sake. She sure isn't a great candidate. I don't hear anyone saying that he is giving money to the best candidates. Part of the giving is based on who is connected with people like Steve Pigeon. Part of the giving is because of Golisano's personal connections (i.e. Connor, Dollinger, Nachbar, etc.).

By the way, I'm not "fooled." I have been following this all along. If you knew what kind of person Golisano is, he has a bit of an ego. Just a little bit. No one tells Tom Golisano what to do. He also gives a lot of money. The difference this time is that he made it very public because of the state senate races this year.

And again, if he wanted to buy influence, why didn't he give to Skelos and Smith?

Support our troops, not the war.

[ Parent ]
Because he doesn't want (0.00 / 0)
either of them to be the majority leader next year. Actually, the fact that he didn't give them money proves the opposite of your point.

Look, if you're trying to create your own power structure, you don't start by reinforcing the one that's there.

He's gonna want a majority leader completely from his own pocket, someone who owes him everything; not someone who can get reelected without his help.

[ Parent ]
Are you being serious? (0.00 / 0)
I hope your post was "tongue and cheek"?

You honestly think the next time Golisano doesn't want something that these 47 elected officials (if they all get elected) won't help their buddy Golisano out?

Yes, Golisano isn't new to Albany but have potentially 47 officials in your pocket doesn't hurt.

This is a prime example of the underhanded dealings that we need to get out of Albany!

re:Buying votes (0.00 / 0)
MattS. You're right that he's trying to buy votes, but wrong about the rest. I'm not going to write a hideously long comment, so see my entry at http://www.thealbanyproject.co...

for an explanation.

Re: This belongs to you. Take it back... Responsible New York Endorses Candidates, Incumbents For New York State Senate (0.00 / 0)
The New York State Senate is one of two houses in the New York State Legislature and has members each elected to two-year terms. There are no limits on the number of terms one may serve. The New York Constitution provides for a varying number of members in the Senate; the current membership is 62, elected from single-member constituencies equal in population. Meanwhile had you heard about Shop it To Me? Well Shop it To Me is a free service that you can sign up for to find clothes on sale.  For those of us who don't want to contemplate getting instant payday loans because we need a couple of shirts, Shop it To Me is a great idea.  We are aware that some of you feel a moral obligation to pay the full price that some suit in New York thinks you should pay for it. You have to wonder though when those same suits get stock options and the poor maltreated people that slave for them get virtually no reward. But, if you like to find bargains on clothes - made in factories thousands of miles away from the same material as the stuff at Wal Mart - then Shop it To Me might be for you.
