| What I find the most astonishing in all of this -- is how Straussian our political life has become and by extension the lemming-like desire of folks to become true believers. I keep asking myself what has happened to the notion of skepticism? At one point, progressives and the left in general recognized that politicians and their minions spend most of their time lying to us. Or as Strauss would put it: "perpetual deception of the citizens by those in power is critical because they need to be led, and they need strong rulers to tell them what's good for them."
Hence our first assumption was OK THEY ARE DECEIVING us. We would then try and figure out what was really happening. In other words, we'd try and see through the bamboozlement. Karl Rove has made this into an art. The fact is that the legislators also understood the faux nature of this war AND the lack of real "reform" in this battle.
Again, real reform is structurally removing the impediments placed by conservatives on state institutions to protect "Jose y Maria six pack." Until that time - business interests will continue to expand the gap between rich and poor. New York 's government will continue its policy of redistributing wealth to the upper 1%.
