Paul Newell is the Stronger Candidate in AD-64

by: Roatti

A common fear that has been present in the anti-Sheldon Silver movement is that the existence of 2 challengers will split that anti-Shelly vote and ensure that Shelly gets re-elected.

So, if you want to end the status quo in Albany and send Sheldon Silver packing, please just vote for Paul Newell.

There has been some debate here by supporters of Shelly's other opponent, Luke Henry, that Henry is the stronger opponent.

I have met Luke and I like him a lot.  He is a genuine guy and he is a real progressive.

But he has not run as good a campaign as Newell.

For case and point, look at the latest campaign filing.  Newell actually outraised Silver during the last reporting period.  And that's without taking any money from lobbyists, corporations, or PAC's.  And that's over $40,000 from 165 different contributors, 139 of whom gave less than $100.

That what we call grassroots support.  That's what we call a base.

In the same time period, Henry has raised $510.  In fairness, Henry just welcomed his first child into the world in August, and it's compeletely understandable if he has different priorities right now.  But the priority of the anti-Shelly reform movement is to defeat Shelly.  And Newell is the candidate most likely to achieve that end.

Luke Henry and his supporters are good progressives who are trying to bring change to Albany to improve the whole state.  That is why I hope they realize that the best way to achieve these goals is to endorse Newell's candidacy.  Doing so would ensure that Luke would still have a bright political future ahead of him. I hope he and his supporters do the right thing before Sept 9.

I couldn't believe my eyes... (4.00 / 1)
When I saw that Shelly had been out-raised. But then again, he's got a lot in the bank - and a lot of favors to call in (he is the speaker).

I also hope that one of the challengers decides to bow and endorse the other - and by the looks of it, Roatti has it right.

Grassroots? (0.00 / 0)
You have to look at Who's contributing if you want to call it grassroots.

There's like only 20 something contributions from LES in this filing for Newell. You say in 'all fairness' but if you're going to be fair than you have to really look at the money. Most of it is Charter School money. So Newell is teaming up in the final days with Roger Stone on an Indianapolis mailer and Charter School folks for the money just to take out Silver, doesn't sound very progressive to me.

I see Luke Henry as the better progressive to Newell if you want to be fair. He hasn't teamed up with Republicans and anti-progressives and he didn't launch himself as some kind of older woman's boy toy as you saw in that 'Cougars for Newell' thing.

You'd have to look at the race run in it's entirety to be fair, to say someone's the stronger opponent and I just think even on petition signatures, well Luke produced more, 3,016 to Paul's 2,388. If you look at money they both have almost the same amount of funds one $17k and the other $19k right now. So I guess I don't buy your measuring stick at all but I defend your right to measure it any way you want.

Don't you know that actually winning is the last thing on some minds?

I've been saying this for a long time: New York City Progressives are a laughingstock precisely because we seldom if ever unite behind one candidate. There is no reason to expect that this race would be different.
