NY-21: Darius Shahinfar's New TV Ad: "Working For Change"

by: robert.harding

If Darius Shahinfar doesn't win this race, he can at least take pride in a few things, namely his appeal to voters and his message that he delivers clearly in a new television spot already airing through the 21st congressional district.

He delivers a few key points: He's not going to take lobbyist money and he won't accept the congressional health care plan until everyone has a good health care plan for themselves.

Also, the taking out the trash imagery there is great. I liked Shahinfar's spots in the past, but this one is the best one to date.

When you are literally 'in bed' with a lobbyist every night... (0.00 / 0)
It's sort of hard to suggest that you "won't take a dime" of lobbyist money - being that at least half of the "dimes" in Darius' personal bank account belong to a lobbyist with business before congress: HIS WIFE.

http://www.deweyleboeuf.com/no...

It seems that, all the while Darius has been telling us he won't be influenced by special interests - he was literally "in bed" with a special interest lobbyist each and every night he was "home".

Why on earth would he work to undermine an industry that brings home the bacon for his family?

Shame on you Darius, you are no better than Phil Steck trying to deceive the voters of the 21st CD with your end-around the very campaign finance agreements you claim to uphold...

It's probably pretty easy not to take the congressional health care plan, it may be good - but probably not nearly as good as your wife's (the energy lobbyist)

Getting a little personal, aren't you? (4.00 / 1)
So now because he is married to someone who is a lobbyist that means he's "in bed" with the special interests?

I would think that such a stand would be admirable considering his wife IS a lobbyist.

Look, instead of dressing down other candidates why don't you tell us why you support Paul Tonko and why you think he's the best candidate? This comment you just posted is very insulting to Darius and his wife.

Nope. (0.00 / 0)
I think that if you are going to criticize other candidates for taking money from lobbyists then it is pretty disingenuous to not disclose that your wife is a lobbyist...

There was a slight pun involved with the "in bed" part - I am assuming you didn't catch it.

On his website, he says that she is a partner at a local Albany law firm - if you are comfortable with half-truths in this campaign for your next member of Congress that is up to you, but to me it seems rather deceitful.

Why Tonko (0.00 / 0)
One reason I would support Tonko is the fact that I know more about him. Darius sounds good, but I have no experience with him so all and all his ideas sound like typical political rhetoric. I also have a problem with his past work experience with Gillibrand. She said she would get us out of this war and low and behold her husband makes money from one of the contractors their. Also don't get me started on the fact that its apparent she moved to Hudson to win this seat. Tonko lives in the district, he has roots in the district.

He goes out of his way to meet his constituents so much that when I met him he remembered a conversation he had with my grandfather who died twenty years ago. Paul has flaws like everyone, but I also know his strengths and the fact that he is the only candidate who lives outside of Albany, hence would be the least likely person to be a slave to the Albany County Dems. I think Tonko has it in the bag due to her personality, name recognition and the fact that he would probably be the best congressman since Sam Stratton. McNulty was a putz who did nothing for his district only his supporters.

Her is a true story, 8 years ago my son graduate from college. He was a bright guy who graduated SUNY Albant in three years with a 4.0 in Policy Studies. All he ever wanted to do was to work in government so I told him to get involved in politics. He tried to get involved with McNulty's campaign where one of his aides more or less gave my son the brush off since he was from Rotterdam. My son by chance met Paul Tonko while working a a country club in Albany. Paul talked to him for hours and told him to come by the LOB to chat. I was shocked really because most politicians are never that cordial to a random kid they meet. Normally they can only be bothered if there is something in it for them. Paul Tonko is a stand up guy who would be a great Congressman.

Actually, with Darius railing against lobbyists (0.00 / 0)
It is pretty bad that his wife is a lobbyist and he (and she) is self-funding huge parts of the campaign.

He is piggy-backing Steck's theme while his wife represents energy and telecom companies with State and Federal governments.  Lobbying puts food on his table.

He doesn't need Lobbyist donations because he has his own lobbyist money.
