NY-21: A Roundup Of Goings-On In The 21st Congressional District

by: robert.harding

Phil Steck: Steck announced yesterday his support for a middle class tax cut plan being pushed by Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. The plan includes the following:

Cuts taxes for 95% of workers and their families with a tax cut of $500 for workers or $1,000 for working couples.

A variety of targeted generous tax cuts -- for low- and middle-income seniors, homeowners, the uninsured, and families sending a child to college or looking to save for retirement.

Dramatically simplifies taxes by consolidating existing tax credits, eliminating the need for millions of senior citizens to file tax forms, and enabling as many as 40 million middle-class Americans to do their own taxes in less than five minutes without an accountant.

Cut corporate taxes for firms that invest and create jobs in the United States, because the current tax code actually provides reimbursement for the expense of moving jobs oversees.

Steck said of the plan, "The anxiety felt by many working families is real. We have just come off the first economic recovery on record where ordinary Americans saw their incomes decline by nearly $1,000, after inflation. We need to focus tax relief on the middle class."

Also, it was announced today that Steck was endorsed by former NBA player Sam Perkins.

Tracey Brooks: Brooks unveiled a new television ad today which calls Phil Steck's attacks "false." It also touts her work with Sen. Hillary Clinton to get more families health care.

Today, Brooks rode the morning CDTA bus between Albany and Schenectady to talk with voters and discuss what issues are important to them. Tonight Brooks will be on the campaign trail once again when she walks door-to-door in Troy with Troy Democratic chair Frank LaPosta and then meets with seniors at the Ogden Mills Senior Center.

Paul Tonko: Tonko was endorsed by Assemblyman John McEneny today. McEneny had this to say about why he endorsed Tonko:

I've spent the summer listening to all the candidates, and I am convinced that Paul Tonko is the best choice to serve the people of the 21st District.

Over the weekend, Tonko praised Barack Obama's Plan for America that was presented during Obama's acceptance speech on Thursday.

"My energy plan calls for this exact kind of investment, to provide the resources our scientists and engineers need to develop the renewable energy sources of tomorrow, which will allow us to break free from our dependence on foreign oil," Tonko said.

Tonko also touted his education plan, which he also aligned with Obama on.

Darius Shahinfar: Shahinfar is back on televisions in NY-21 with his third TV spot. As of Sunday, Shahinfar was the only candidate to sign on to the Ethics and Good Government Contract that Shahinfar created in early August. Shahinfar has also said that he will reject a congressional pay raise and reject the congressional health care plan should he be elected to serve.

A question about coverage... (0.00 / 0)
So, Phil Steck is first in the line-up (as usual with this blog), with the greatest number of his own words in the body.

Clearly this order of candidates it not alphabetical, or based in any sort of reasoning other than your seemingly inherent bias towards the Steck campaign.

Then, when Jack McEneny provides a lengthy release on his support of Paul Tonko for Congress - you choose the most generic / watered-down possible statement from him.

At least Soundpolitic prefaces his posts (or makes mention somewhere) that he is not of a totally independent opinion.

No disclaimer here, just a slightly slanted view of things...

Look... (4.00 / 1)
You once insinuated that I was biased and a supporter of the Brooks campaign. So now it's changed. According to you, I'm biased because I didn't provide enough of McEneny's words for publication.

I have told you before that I support none of the candidates more than the other. I am in contact with all four of the campaigns - Steck, Brooks, Tonko and Shahinfar. I believe that the winner of this primary will be a great choice, whether it's Tonko, Shahinfar, Brooks or Steck. I don't care who it is. That's why I'm unbiased here.

By the way, those aren't Phil Steck's words that I quoted. That is the Barack Obama middle class tax cut plan. I posted the whole thing because I felt it was important to know that not only is Steck supporting this, but Obama is pushing for it.

I do not take accusations of bias lightly. I have remained fair in this race and more than one campaign has acknowledged that. In fact, I believe all four of these campaigns have told me at some point that I have given fair coverage to this race and allowed everyone the same amount of time.

I went back to August 14 (almost three weeks ago) and in that three week span, I wrote about Tonko seven times. I wrote about Brooks ten times (mostly due to multiple releases about Rep. Maloney coming to NY-21). I have written about Steck nine times and I have written about Shahinfar only four times. Now if you supported Shahinfar, I could see where you would come up with such an argument. But Shahinfar's campaign has been great with me and has been in touch with me (spoke with them, by phone, earlier today).

I have tried to be as fair as I can. I looked through my posts about Tonko and you never accused me of being biased towards Tonko.

Lastly, the order was completely random. I had just received a Steck press release when I started this post and made it a point to mention Steck first. If you take that big quote out of Steck's mention and the video out of Brooks' mention, guess who I wrote the most about?

Paul Tonko.

Bias is bias. (0.00 / 0)
Clearly, I am just calling it how I see it (apparently your bias shifts). I see far more coverage and the first name on the post go to Phil Steck - so it appears to me that this is not quite a whole-hearted attempt at fairness.

I am more than willing to consider that this wasn't done with malicious intent - but for future reference, it seems like it would make sense to list the candidates in alphabetical order - and try to provide equal coverage.

(I was actually going to make mention of the Shahinfar end of things, but just prior to this posting was his advertisement, which ended up in close proximity to this story - so it seemed more 'fair')

Now, now... (4.00 / 1)
You griped before about Tracey Brooks and my coverage and bias towards her. Now it's Phil Steck.

You need to make up your mind who I'm bias towards. If I write more about Paul Tonko over the next few days, will you accuse me of bias then?

[ Parent ]
Now, now... (0.00 / 0)
I made it quite clear that I think your bias shifts, leading me more and more to believe that it is a lack of concern for the perception of bias - rather than its actual existence.

Both issues raise concerns about journalistic integrity - but as I said, I think that you should look to the future with a bit more thought put into the perception of your reporting (rather than your reporting as you see it).

[ Parent ]
I can't please everyone... (4.00 / 1)
Including you. I never have approached writing with the intent to address the concerns of one when many others approve of my writing, including many campaigns and the campaigns in this race.

I am a blogger. I do have ethics, but I will inject my opinion when necessary. That is my right as a blogger. Bloggers can do that while "real journalists" cannot (or at least, should not). If I think a Shahinfar ad or Steck mailer or union endorsement of Tonko is a good thing, I'm going to say so. I can say so. That's the advantage to blogging. Unlike "real journalists" I can give you a dash of my opinion. I don't ask everyone to like it. All I ask is that you respect it.

If I had REAL bias in this race, I would be leaning towards one candidate. You accused me before of supporting Brooks and now you accuse me of supporting Steck. When I gave you the reason why Steck led off the roundup today, that still didn't sink in. This was completely random. Tomorrow when I do another one of these I could lead off with anyone. It could be Steck again. It could be Tonko. It could be Shahinfar or Brooks. The point is you are basing your accusations of bias on two things, it seems:

(1) Listing and talking about Steck first before the other candidates.

(2) Including that excerpt featuring Barack Obama's middle class tax cut policy while only including one sentence from McEneny's endorsement of Tonko.

Not exactly a strong case for bias. But hey, to each their own.

[ Parent ]
here's an idea (4.00 / 1)
if you aren't satisfied with the coverage of this race or that race or anything else, why not cover it yourself?

seriously. how do you think the site you are currently reading came in to being?

just a thought.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

[ Parent ]
Definitely a consideration I have had. (0.00 / 0)
And it's definitely not that I am unsatisfied, or even ungrateful.

I think it's an awesome job that the contributors do here, and if I wasn't working a campaign and filling my life with a myriad of volunteer activities - I probably would.

Maybe one of these days I will have the common sense to stay out of a campaign so that I can report on it :-)

Until then, don't consider my comments in such an extreme fashion - we are all on the same side. I always try and preface my statements with something along the lines of "in my opinion" or "seems to me" for precisely that reason - I am not some extremist neo-con fascist or some whacko-leftist commie, and am always up for some debate.

And I think that blogging is 'real journalism' at its best, or at least has the potential to be. As I said, the more we discuss the topic, it doesn't seem like an intentional bias, but just a lack of concern for the perception thereof. It's your choice to acknowledge that potential perception (or not) - I happen to think it's an interesting point of discussion.

[ Parent ]
The only perception there is... (4.00 / 1)
Is your opinion. If you don't like the angle I write from, that's your opinion. Surely it's not one shared by many, but if that's your opinion I would respect that.

Like I said, I can't please everyone. I mean that. That doesn't just go for this discussion but it goes for all the things I write about. Whenever I write anything there will be someone out there who takes issue with what I say. They don't have to like it, but they can respect it. That's all I ask for.

This could be good (0.00 / 0)
If Brooks wins on Tuesday she will have the Dem line, Steck the Indy line and Tonko the Working Families line.  Could a repulican  sneak in a 4 way race?

Could Be a Five-Way At Most (0.00 / 0)
Yes, if Brooks wins the Dem primary, good progressives will still have the option to vote for either Phil Steck on the Independence Party line or Paul Tonko on the WFP.

Now if Steven Vasquez pulls off a victory in the Republican primary, he'd still have to come out on top of all of those folks as well as his primary opponent Jim Buhrmaster, who secured the Conservative Party line.

Wow...I really hope that all doesn't come true :-)

[ Parent ]
Thank You (0.00 / 0)
Robert, thank you for providing this wrap-up.  I would have liked to do another State of the Race, but alas, I haven't got the time.  Completing my interview with Phil Steck is far more important.

Also, sorry you had to deal with PineHillsResident.  He is an Albany County Democratic Committeeman (an elected party official) who refuses to disclose his true name, which I find is atrocious.  And he'll never stop accusing people of "bias" until the only candidate reported on is the one he supports.  That's the other reason I'm not doing a final State of the Race...I don't want another flame war with only six days to go before the primary.

It's true you can't please everybody...but some people just don't want to pleased in the first place.  Peace.

See my comment in the other thread... (0.00 / 0)
Regarding your concern with my anonymity, a lack of time, and several other points of disdain in your comment.

My accusation was well-founded, and I thought the dialogue almost turned productive (unfortunately some folks never really want to have a dialogue, just to be pleased).

Tracey's Ad (0.00 / 0)
F

Enough with the basketball puff piece.  Enough of exploiting children in television ads.  Enough of cheesy referees.

"Phil Steck's attacks are false & misleading?"  Where are the facts to back it up?  Tracey Brooks has taken tons of money from PACs and lobbyists.  Most of her individual contributions are from out the district, bundled up in EMILY's List PAC.  And yes, she works for a Republican connected law firm and has only been a Democrat since AFTER George W. Bush was "elected" President.

This is by far and away the worst ad of this campaign.  It's an uninformative ad aimed an uniformed voters.
