SD-43: The Albany Project Welcomes Mike Russo, New York State Senate Candidate

by: robert.harding

Fri Sep 05, 2008 at 15:57:06 PM EDT

It is my pleasure to welcome Mike Russo to The Albany Project. Russo is a candidate for New York State Senate in the 43rd Senate District. Russo has a Democratic primary to focus on against Brian Premo which will be decided on September 9.

This is Joe Bruno's old seat, so this sure will be a seat that the Republicans want to keep come November. But with candidates like Mike Russo, it will be a tough bet. (Image courtesy of Mike Russo for Senate's website.)

Here is some background on Russo:

As the Director of New York's 20th Congressional District for Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, Mike was her top staff person in the district, responsible for establishing her offices, daily operations and personnel.

The district runs from as far north as Lake Placid, south as far as Poughkeepsie and then to the west to Cooperstown encompassing most of 10 counties and about 1/7th of the area of New York State. There are regional offices and staff assigned in Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, Hudson and Delhi. Mike connected with the people and is very aware of the real issues affecting the families of Upstate New York.

And here is a short bio on Russo:

Mike Russo currently lives in Saratoga with his wife Fiorella and mother Helen. He and his family are committed to public service and the personal sacrifices it involves. The Russo family believes we need strong, independent leaders who are willing to listen to all, regardless of political views or persuasions. Most of all, our leaders must realize they serve the public and that any seat they are entrusted to hold really belongs to the people they represent.

Mike's roots have uniquely prepared him to represent us in New York's State Senate. Mike's mom, Helen, was raised on a farm outside Ithaca. Mike credits much of his moral character, giving spirit and hard work ethic to his mom, his experience on farms, and what can be generally found in the fabric of our farm community.

Please join me in welcoming Mike Russo to The Albany Project.

Glad to have you here and I look forward to discussing the issues impacting our state and SD-43 with you today.

Clean Money Clean Elections (4.00 / 1)
I am very supportive. I believe we need to make the process accessible to the average american to make our representative government work the way it was designed to.

Couple of quick questions (4.00 / 1)
First, what's your take on Clean Money Clean Elections?

Secondly, what should be Senate Dems first priority when we take over as the majority?

Taxes (0.00 / 0)
I am not in favor of the tax cap; it doesn't grant the needed relief...and people can't afford their current taxes...let alone a 4% increase.  In addition, I am not in favor of a plan that doesn't insure that educaion, emergency services, ets, are fully funded.  I support the circuit breaker becaus it will grant some relief to people based on income.  I rewally thing the tax cap is more for political expediency; I am relly for a long term solution such as separating property taxes from school funding, and moving to a formula that is income or sales tax based.  Some states use other mechanisims such as motor vehicle tax;  I think our State leaders need to have the courage to get all of the stakeholders together to once and for all find a long solution which separates the two.  Lets stop pitting our school children against property owners.

First question (0.00 / 0)
Do you support a property tax cap or a circuit breaker to address our property tax woes in this state? Or do you support another method of addressing those woes?

Your questions (4.00 / 2)
1. To make a difference & to make sure we have a voice in the changing state government.
2.Property taxes. People can no longer afford to stay in their homes. Property taxes combined with energy cost make it impossible for the average american to own their home. Home ownership should be something that every american can obtain.
3. Job creation; good paying jobs with benefits.
4. There are so many pieces to this question that it is difficult to answer in a short period of time. Our basic roads and infrastructure needs to be improved and updated. I also think that we need to develop a light rail system that includes feeder transportation so it is accessible to the average comuter. Lastly our bus transportaion needs to be a priority due to the nature of our rural district.
5. I believe in fully funding public education. I also believe that investing in making sure that everyone wanting to pursue education/a degree has the ability to do so (especially the STEM subjects). Equally important is attracting good employers to the region so our children stay in the area and want to call it home.

Welcome to TAP (4.00 / 2)
I have a few questions I always ask every candidate I interview:

1) Why are you running?

2) What will be your first priority if you are elected (just choose the most important issue, be specific) and why?

3) What do you think is your area's biggest challenge?

4) What are your thoughts on transportation improvement?

5) Do you have specific ideas about how to improve the brain drain problem in New York?

Municipal Consolidation (4.00 / 2)
Yes I agree with municipal consolidation. We no longer have the luxury of duplicating services within the same geographic area. We need to be as cost effective as possible with tax payer dollars. That being said all downsizing should be done through natural attrition to protect jobs.

[ Parent ]
Your impression (0.00 / 0)
I realize you've probably moved on by now, but if you check back, Mike, what would you say is the level of enthusiasm or interest among the voters regarding consolidation?  It seems to be mentioned ever more frequently and sounds like an idea that's gathering steam.

Don't judge other people by your own limitations.

[ Parent ]
Thanks for being here, Mike (4.00 / 2)
What's your position, if any, on municipal consolidation as a way to alleviate property taxes?

Sounds like connection problems... (0.00 / 0)
I'm getting word in that there is a problem with the Internet connection where Mike is conducting this live blog (or hoping to conduct the live blog). Hopefully things will iron out here shortly.

If we can't get Mike on for some reason... (0.00 / 0)
Submit questions anyway and we will be sure to have Mike answer those questions and have a write-up on it.

Mike... (0.00 / 0)
If elected to the New York State Senate, would you fight for the implementation of the Brennan Center report's recommendation in addressing the legislative problems our state faces?

Lets make a difference (4.00 / 2)
I have been really blessed with the opportunity over the past three decades to be able to represent othres and be in the postion to help.  I have always been an advocate for working families and a community activist.  Most recently, I was able to play an integral role in helping to elect Kirsten Gillibrand to Congress, and then as the Direstor of her Congressional District, to work with her to bring a new style of open, honest and accessible government to the Congress.

With the help of all of our neighbors in the 43rd Senate District, we can do the same in the NYS Senate.  I believe in listening to and respecting everyone, rgardless of their political affiliation or view.  I also believe that in order for our representative government to work, people have a responsibility to share their views and concerns.  I have always been the type of representative that welcomes all to the table, and no one will ever work harder to make it work.

In todays changing State govt, we need to make sure we have a person in this seat that will give us a voice in our region and upstate NY.  Together, we can make this seat "the people's seat".
