Bloodsucking legislators?

by: simonstl

Wed Sep 10, 2008 at 07:17:16 AM EDT

I know it's the day after the primary, and everyone's excited (for better or worse) about that, but there's still some action in Albany. Governor Paterson's initial remarks:

Mr. Paterson, a former state senator, uttered the "bloodsuckers" line as he was telling a joke about what he saw as the hypocrisy in the way some of his colleagues treated advocates for groups like the disabled.

"There were legislators who I used to think practiced their own versions of being Count Dracula in that they would be very nice to the advocates when they came to Albany," Mr. Paterson said in a speech to a group of activists for the disabled at an Albany hotel. "By 5 o'clock, the sun would go down, and they'd go back to who they really are: a bunch of bloodsuckers."

And his clarification:

"I didn't say that my colleagues were bloodsuckers. I said that there were certain people who listened to advocates, and as soon as they left and, you know, it got dark, were acting in that way - like Count Dracula - because they really didn't care."

The Daily News takes the Dracula reference and runs with it. They also explore it in an editorial.

Legislators of both parties seem to be very sad that the Governor isn't kind enough to their always-to-be-highly-respected branch. First he calls legislators back into session from "vacation" to address potentially huge fiscal problems. Then he suggests that some legislators might be hypocritical, pretending good will while really just waiting for the advocacy bus to leave Albany.

I don't know, though - despite the choice of metaphor, this doesn't sound remotely Spitzerian to me. (And at least he's not suggesting that the Democrats are for sale.)

Update: And NYCO's take on it is also fun. Duels? Hmmm... Albany's had some interesting times.

drama queens (4.00 / 1)
I used to love this drama stuff, but now I'm getting seriously tired of it.

And I like Brodsky a lot, but he's got to stop these pretentions he has of being "Master of the Legislature" (ie LBJ being "Master of the Senate").  Enough with the pop-eyed indignation, OK?  I didn't like it when he was doing it re the Brennan Report and don't like it now.

Paterson is not Spitzer and they know it.  Sounds to me like they're just nervous he might have a mind of his own.

and a very strategic, analytical mind it is; hope he owns it (4.00 / 1)
Albany runs on drama, unfortunately.  It's not a deliberative body full of wonkish technocrats, its a soap opera.

And, Simon, I think that Paterson WAS trying to say that the Leg is for sale.  Blood = money; under cover of darkness with ample additions of liquor, the night business of the the leg is to..... go to fundraisers, give and take checks.  Bloodsuckers.  Look for a post from me later today about how this plays out in the realm of healthcare.

now that's a correction I LIKE! (0.00 / 0)
I'm not quite sure how I missed, except that I thought this was a very different - and more acceptable, frankly - joke than Malcolm Smith's.  (There's also a minor difference between putting the Dems on sale and the Legislature having been for sale, but yes, you definitely have a point.)

Blogging early in the morning comes with some serous hazards. I look forward to the healthcare piece.

duels (4.00 / 1)
and yes, Dewitt Clinton was in a duel once, although I can't remember if he "won" (no one was killed).  And I know he used to go bare knuckles with other politicos.  I mean, literally bare knuckles.

Gotta admit Paterson hurt some of (0.00 / 0)
his fellow Democratic Senators with that broad brush comment. If he knows of some who did that, and if he's talking about the GOP, then why not just give their names already.

There are some very good legislators who do care very deeply about this issue. There are legislators with disabilities, he's not the only one, and ones who have sons and daughter's and spouses with disabilities.

The Democratic Assembly for one have been the very ones who battled back budget cuts to the disabled. So his comment rings tabloid.

The Democratic Assembly has also passed numerous measures that have just died in the GOP Senate. Since we just had an election day, I'm talking about Cahill's measure A.244 requiring polling locations to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Titus's measure A.7103 that would require polling places be located along public transportation routes, and Koon's A.7196 requiring that Braille ballots be produced for blind or visually impaired. If you want to read the entire list of measures they passed this year just look it up here as I did. It's impressive. It's extensive. It's tangible. It's real. It's not made up. I don't think they became Count Dracula in the night.

Paterson paints one hurtful brush and then thinks it's funny. The mocked up photo The Post ran with blood on Silver's face is frankly outrageous and nasty. I'd say with Silver's landslide victory of 3-to1 the voters rejected those kind of tactics. They turn people off. I don't know how many times I have to say it. When you go over the top, get unbelievable with the hype and defy reason as people know it they reject you. Not talking about you per say just the altered picture on The Post cover (I am 100% against altered photos anywhere) and Paterson's comment which once again he says he really didn't mean. Well then what does this guy mean?

I didn't think it was particularly broad brush (0.00 / 0)
"There were legislators" isn't "All legislators".

Haven't seen the Post cover.

Here it is (0.00 / 0)
and it's infamitory to jews quite frankly. I think it's stuff like this that just turns voters off. So if they wanted an impact they really got the reverse affect.

It's the Post. (4.00 / 1)
It's the Post.  Are you blaming Paterson for the Post hating any and all Democrats?

[ Parent ]
I just think Paterson (0.00 / 0)
is not a leader when he gets infamitory, when he gets tabloid, and when he gets wrong on issues some legislators work very hard on. Saying "it's the Post" as if that's an excuse to turn a blind eye to an offensive and altered photo on someone who frankly has been a friend to the disability community is just going too far in my book. But, what do I know.

And, yes, what the Post is doing is infamitory to Jews-- and I guess that a more tactful Governor would have seen the potential for that in the analogy and not used it.  But that what they do by day vs. what they do in the evening thing is really such a marked contrast for some legislators, it is easy to see how the metaphor (absent anti-Jewish overtones) would have occurred to somebody.

Sounds like it's a simple Democratic loyalty issue... fair enough.

And I agree that Paterson needs to name some names at some point.  Surely he won't name Silver.

But part of Spitzer's problem was that he was such a lone ranger, that no one wanted to come forward and identify specific bloodsuckers.  'Twould be nice if some of these truly disability-friendly legislators would step up and do the naming of names.  But are they disability-friendly, or themselves-friendly?

All that said, it seems a little histrionic to blame an off-the-cuff comment about no one in particular for the Post's hatred of Silver and the Post's poor taste.

Instead of curling up into defensive balls a la Spitzer and Bruno, how about seeing this as an opportunity for further (and less colorful) conversation?

If the Legislature, or any powerful people in it (like Silver - although he is a big boy, is he not?), or any of their surrogates or supporters, think that Paterson being a nice guy means that no bad feelings ever get aired, I think they're wrong.

There is something in Albany and the NY media that WANTS these snits and spats to continue, however.  Paterson's comment was honest and sprang from his own experience as a legislator and a disabled person.  Leave it to the Post to run with it in an inflammatory way, to rile up people who are too used to being defensively riled, for various (mostly honest) reasons...

The POST is the villain here, vis a vis the photo.  Spitzer is gone.  Bruno and his boxing gloves are gone.  This is a new world, and the old knee-jerk reactions just aren't going to cut it any more.  (And I hate to say it but Silver, despite his quietness, got along very well in that bad atmosphere.)

Paterson needs to say sorry to his friends in private, but NOT say sorry to his enemies.

Oh, come off it (4.00 / 1)
with the fake pearl-clutching. We have the most dysfunctional legislature of all fifty states, and the people that even know about it, fewer than should, don't tend to think well of it.
